Join us as for history hour: Lunch Edition. On Thursday July 9th our Amanda Eggleton will give a presentation about the history of the Lady Jane Gray School. Lunch begins at 12pm, program will start at 12:30pm. Guests can choose from a boxed lunch provided by Clines Catering. The lunch choices are ham and cheese on marble rye or turkey and cheese sandwich on Italian, with pasta salad and dessert. Coffee, tea, soda, or water provided. Lunch and Program is $20.00 Program only is $10.00 Reservations for lunch must be booked by Tuesday July 7th. Join us at the Phelps Mansion Museum on July 11th from 11 AM to 3 PM for a FREE Community Day. Every room of the mansion will be open and full of activities, including kids crafts, historic tool demonstrations, HistoryForge, and live music. Out front we’ll have lawn games and sidewalk chalk, along with Here’s the Twist ice cream truck and Downtown Danny’s hotdog cart parked in our driveway. Free water and cookies will be in the ballroom – bring cash if you’d like to treat yourself to ice cream or hot dogs! Please note the ice cream truck will only be here from 1-3PM. We also want to hear from you about the Phelps’ place in the community! The ballroom will have feedback boards set up where you can tell us more about what you’d like to see from us going forward. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a longtime friend, your perspective will help shape the future of this community treasure. HistoryForge: Crowdsourcing Local HistoryAre you interested in local history and want to help preserve it? Come learn about HistoryForge, a community-sourced digital mapping project hosted by Binghamton University. Community volunteers transcribe census records on the website, which in turn get plotted onto an interactive, digital map. We have started with the 1910 census and have transcribed over 10,000 census records. We’re currently working on Binghamton’s Third Ward, though we hope in the future to incorporate Johnson City, Endicott, and other towns in Broome County. Our free transcription sessions are a great place to meet like-minded history enthusiasts, and food and drinks are provided. Anyone can learn how to do this as long as you have a computer, an internet connection, and the ability to read cursive (or an interest in learning how to do so!).Please make sure to bring your laptop with you to this event.If you have any questions reach out to the Project Coordinator, Mary Tuttle: [email protected] is FREE – no registration necessary.

Climb aboard the Trolley and come celebrate National Carousel Day with us.  We will visit 3 of the 6 carousels. Collect a card at each stop and claim your carousel circuit button at the last stop.  On board guests can participate in trivia questions as we venture between destinations, and we will discuss the history of each carousel at each location. Guests are encouraged to bring snacks or a lunch. There is a concession stand available at Highland Park as well. We will end our journey with a trip to an ice cream stop. Tickets are $20 per person and limited to 27 guests. So come take a spin, or 2 on Broome County’s historic carousels. Space is limited so book early! Important to note: The CFJ carousel is closed for this year and at the current time the carousel at Ross Park Zoo and West Corners Carousels may or may not be ready by July 25th.  The Carousel Trolley tour is sponsored in part by Foam-It Insulation Reserve Now
