Feminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewartâs book, The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Womenâs Magic, tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women, in secrecy and subterfuge, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. Conjure informs our lives in ways remarkable and ordinaryâfrom traditional medicines that informed the creation of Vicks VapoRub and the rise of Aunt Jemimaâs Pancake Mix, to the original magic of Disneyâs The Little Mermaid (2023), and the true origins of the all-American classic blue jean.From the moment enslaved Africans first arrived on these shores, conjure was heavily regulated and even outlawed. Now, Stewart uncovers new contours of American history, sourcing letters from the enslaved, dispatches from the lore of Oshun and other African mystics. The Conjuring of America is a love letter to the real magic Black women used, their herbs, food, textiles, song, and dance, used to sow rebellion, freedom, and hope.Join us to take part in the magic and celebrate the legacy of Americaâs founding Black women. About the Author: Lindsey Stewart is a Black feminist philosopher and an Associate Professor of philosophy at the University of Memphis. She is the author of The Politics of Black Joy. Her work has been featured in Blavity, Signs, Hypatia, and the British Journal for the History of Philosophy, and she holds a 2021 Michael Beaney Prize. She lives in Memphis, Tennessee. This training is a one-hour presentation delivered by public health and mental health professionals. Participants review the impact of the opioid epidemic as well as relevant state policies and data pertaining to naloxone and harm reduction. Participants will learn how to recognize signs and symptoms of opioid use disorder and opioid overdose as well as how to respond to suspected opioid overdoses and administer naloxone. Participants will receive a free Narcan kit. This program is administered by the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School - Division of Addiction Psychiatry.

The make-up class will be Tuesday, February 3, 5-6pmMarch 6, 13, 20, 27April 3, 10Tai Chi is an ancient practice originated from China is proven to boost both mental and physical health. Itâs a proven exercise promoting balance and preventing falls, relieving depression, Parkinson's disease, dementia and reversing disease progression in osteoarthritis. It also helps with insomnia, hypertension, and fibromyalgia. Itâs often referred as âMeditation in Motionâ. In this session, Dr. Gang Huang will lead a hands-on session to work on Tai Chi fundamentals such as joints health, standing meditation, weight shifting and balance, and Tai Chi walking. Dr. Gang Huang is one of the formal disciples of Master Yang Jun, who is the direct descendent (sixth-generation) of Yang Cheng Fu and of Yang Lu Chan, the creator of Yang Style Tai Chi. Gang has learned Yang style from Masters like Yang Jun, Wang Hanrong, etc. and also Chen style from Chen Bing, Chen Zhenglei, and Chen Yu. He is an authorized instructor of Yang Family Tai Chi Association and is currently teaching Tai Chi classes in Bridgewater. He has introduced Tai Chi to many folks since 2014. We celebrate Black History Month with the Bradford Hayes Quartet! Enjoy this night of jazz tunes. Bradford Hayes, a native of Dinwiddie County, Virginia has been a force on the jazz scene for many years now. He has performed at a number of clubs, colleges and concert halls that include Birdland (NYC), L'Entrepot (Paris, FRANCE) and the Beacon Theater (NYC). Bradford has performed in different musical settings with Jimmy Heath, Al Grey, Cecil Payne, Rufus Reid, Ray Bryant, Ted Curson, Charles Davis, Joe Lee Wilson, Ben Riley, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Cecil Brooks III, Steve Colson, Kelvin Bell, Pheeroan Aklaff, Michael Cochrane, NabatĂŠ Isles and Donald Braden. Mr. Hayesâ band has also shared the stage with the bands of Chico Freeman, Betty Carter, Joe Henderson, Max Roach, Marlena Shaw, Pieces of a Dream, and Hilton Ruiz among others. Bradford recently performed a series of concerts in collaboration with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra as well as a performance with Avant Garde Pianist Steve âAdegokeâ Colson at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Mr. Hayes holds a Bachelor of Sciences Degree in Music Education from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. He has also studied privately with George Coleman and Charles Davis. Bradfordâs latest recording is entitled âThe Jazz Lifeâ.
