General Meeting, Monday, 26 JANUARY 2025 @ 7 pm No OMPF*? No Problem! (*Official Military Personnel File) with Sara Chochran Online via Zoom--Registration Required (opens soon) Open to GSBC members and non-Members Researching 20th Century veterans is especially difficult as a fire destroyed millions of Official Military Personnel Files in 1973. This class will look at other ways to find the stories of the WWI, WII, Korea, and peacetime veterans in our families. Sara Cochran is a full-time professional genealogist with thirty years of research experience. Her research has taken her to nearly every state in the USA and Ireland. She especially enjoys breaking down brick walls, discovering the stories of black sheep ancestors, and helping individuals preserve their photographic legacy. Sara holds a Boston University Genealogical Research Certificate, a Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science, and is an alum of the ProGen Study Group. She is a member of DAR and other lineage societies, the Association of Professional Genealogists, and the Genealogical Speakers Guild. You can find her online at TheSkeletonWhisperer.com.

William Franklin, the son of Benjamin Franklin, was the last royalist governor of New Jersey. John Fell, "the great Tory hunter," led the local opposition to the British during that time.  Although their paths probably never crossed, their dual lives provide a unique look at New Jersey in Revolutionary times.  In advance of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, noted local author Jim Wright will talk about these two exceptional men, their legacies, and the reason Ridgewoodians should be upset about the name of a certain highway.

Wyckoff author and Son of the American Revolution Robert Skead will be on hand to discuss this timely topic as we celebrate America 250. Based on his three American Revolutionary War Adventure books, his presentation will include: New Jersey’s role in the American Revolution, the leadership of General George Washington, stories about the Culper spy ring, the American Turtle submarine, and the Great Chain at West Point.
