Raku is a dramatic and fast-paced ceramic firing technique that originated in 16th-century Japan and is traditionally connected to the Japanese tea ceremony. Unlike conventional kiln firings, Raku pieces are removed from the kiln while red hot and placed into combustible materials, creating beautiful crackle patterns, metallic finishes, and unpredictable surface effects that make each piece truly one of a kind. This workshop begins with an Introduction Class on March 28th from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., where students will learn about the history of Raku, the firing process, and how to prepare pottery for the kiln.Participants will then have three weeks of open studio access to create their work. The Raku firing will take place on April 25th from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m, when students will fire their pieces using traditional Raku techniques. Each student may create up to four pieces for the firing. Specific requirements for pottery forms and glaze will be discussed during the first class. There will also be an option to create horsehair pottery, a technique that produces striking organic patterns on the clay surface.
