Wednesday, January 14 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. “What’s in Your Water? Important info for private well users” with Amy Hudnor from NH Department of Environmental Services on Zoom. If your drinking water comes from a private well, it is important for the health of you and your family that you test your water regularly. New Hampshire well water can contain naturally occurring elements in soil and rock, such as arsenic and radon, and contaminants such as PFAS can find their way into water from human activities. You cannot taste, smell or see these substances, but over time they can increase the chances of health issues. Amy Hudnor from NH Dept of Environmental Services will review the most common well water contaminants and their potential health effects. The good news is that any water contaminant found can be removed, so Amy will fully review water treatment and well maintenance strategies if contaminants are found. Tara Schroeder will talk about how GMCG and NHDES are enrolling area schools in the Communicating Data program with MDI Biological Lab and Dartmouth. This exciting partnership will bring additional water testing into the successful Get WET program that has been serving area schools for many years. In addition to classroom testing of important substances such as chloride and nitrate, we will add testing for metals such as arsenic and uranium. We will focus on empowering students and families with knowledge of actions to take to improve the quality of their water. Hosted by GMCG, Chocorua Lake Conservancy and Cook Memorial Library.
