Combining stirring performances with groundbreaking scholarship, award-winning ensemble La Donna Musicale presents: Love and Libations: Julie Pinel and Airs of France on Saturday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. This program explores the distinctive secular contributions of women composers from Paris to the French Baroque and Rococo genres of airs sérieux and airs à boire (serious and drinking songs). These song forms celebrate passionate longing and dissolute intoxication. From Julie Pinel (fl. 1737), featured composer, the evening includes several selections from her 1737 publication, Nouveau recueil d’airs. In addition, La Donna Musical will perform music composed by unknown Parisian women and by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre. This program highlights the luxuriant environment of an intimate Parisian salon, replete with the sounds of voices in solo, duo, and trio settings, along with flute accompaniment and supported by the captivating tones of the harpsichord and viola da gamba. Ensemble: Daniela Tosic, mezzo-soprano Fausto Miro, tenor Na’ama Lion, flute Julia Connor, violin Katherine Shao, keyboards Laury Gutiérrez, viola da gamba La Donna Musicale has presented over 300 concerts in the US, Europe and South America. The group has produced four ground-breaking commercial CDs to outstanding national and international reviews, winning awards and accolades. It has presented many modern world premieres, from composers who were nuns to worldly composers of opera and oratorio. Its radio and video presentations have reached thousands of people from China to Chile, from Austria to Australia, from Colombia to Cork.
