When: Friday DEC 5, 8a to ~11a Leader: Jeff Bleam This is an easy walk along the slough formed by Dry Creek. We will head from the Park to the Slough where we could see wintering geese lke Snow, White-fronted, and of course Canada. Also herons, egrets, Virginia Rail, Sora, and plenty of close views of ducks, teal, and mergansers. Please join the Northwest Nevada Bird Alliance (Lahontan Audubon Society) for a Christmas Bird Count orientation and practice bird count at Rancho San Rafael! Binoculars will be provided. We will start with an introduction to the Christmas Bird Count, including the history of the count, protocol, and tips for counting. We will then split into groups and divide up the park to count birds in a practice run ahead of the Truckee Meadows CBC. This walk is open to people of all identities and all levels of birding (beginner to advanced). Learn about local CBCs on our website. If a count is full, please consider joining a count like Fallon, Winnemucca, Summer Lake, or Woodsfords. These areas are a little more remote, but they still need bird counters! When: Saturday DEC 13, 8a to ~11a Leader: Amanda Seymour   The variety of trees, lakes, marshes, grass and urban environments at Damonte Wetlands are home to many different types of birds! We'll be doing a 3 mile loop on a flat, paved path. We should expect to see Red-tailed Hawks, Cooper's Hawks, Northern Harriers, American Kestrels, and maybe a Bald Eagle or 2! In the reeds we may see Marsh Wrens, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Song Sparrows. White-crowned Sparrows and Say's Phoebes also like to hang out nearby. On the ground we may see California Quail, Killdeer, Western Meadowlarks, Starlings, Brewer's Blackbirds and Great-tailed Grackles. The shallow water attracts Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets. At the lakes we might see Green-winged Teal, Common Mergansers, Mallards, Canada Geese, American Coots, Tundra Swans, California Gulls, Greater Yellowlegs and more. In the trees we may see woodpeckers and common songbirds. Registration is not yet available. Members will receive notice of field trip registration via email.

The Colombian Andes - a relatively new destination for birders, with greater safety for travelers and a network of bird reserves, offers a chance to see unique and new birds! This includes chances to see rare antipittas that previously remained elusive and unseen to ornithologists. In May 2026, our chapter will be heading to Colombia with Flyway Birding Tours with expert bird guide, Mario Cordoba.
