The ketubba, or Jewish marriage contract, is the best-recognized and most widely-used kind of Jewish legal document. But it is also the sole surviving descendant of an ancient Aramaic contract-writing tradition that was once shared widely throughout much of the Near East, and not only among Jews. This talk will trace the surprisingly long and varied history of the ketubba’s evolution and eventual consolidation as an iconic rabbinic Jewish practice, from the ancient Near East until the tenth century CE – a history that illuminates how rabbinic Judaism itself transformed and spread in the wake of the Islamic conquests. Bio: Eve Krakowski is an associate professor of Near Eastern Studies and Judaic Studies at Princeton University. She studies the social history of the medieval Middle East, mainly through everyday documents preserved in the Cairo Geniza. Her work to date has focused mainly on gender, kinship, and rabbinic law among Jews in Fatimid and Ayyubid Egypt. Her first book, Coming of Age in Medieval Egypt: Women’s Adolescence, Jewish Law, and Ordinary Culture, was published in 2018. She is now working on a second book tentatively titled Jewish Writing in the First Millennium, which examines how and why new forms of Jewish documents developed and spread widely across the Islamic Mediterranean during the ninth and tenth centuries. Nemer has been an artist since the age of five and continues creating today—over 81 years of expressing life through the five senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell, and even taste. Beyond these, they also draw upon deeper senses such as spatial awareness and balance, both essential to their artistic journey. For Nemer, creating art requires engaging the whole self. Life itself becomes a process of shaping a world, expressing feelings, and translating the experience of the senses into form. Over time, his work evolved from charcoal drawings to chalk, clay, and ultimately painting. Spatial awareness and balance have remained the most dominant force in his work. After many years recreating nature and realism, Nemer began to experiment more deeply, creating art that reflects not just the world as it appears, but life as it is observed and felt—through spaces, colors, and shapes reimagined into a three-dimensional vision on a two-dimensional canvas. For him, a canvas is like a page for a writer: where words build stories and moods, colors and forms convey passion, energy, and emotion. Both painter and writer seek to create meaning, spark feeling, and move others. ABOUT THE ARTIST:For more than 65 years, Nemer has dedicated himself to creating vibrant abstract paintings, driven by a lifelong passion for color and form. As technology has transformed the world, it has also expanded his artistic practice. Building on three decades of painting, Nemer now translates his work into unique functional art pieces—pillows, scarves, dinnerware, and even puzzles—designed to enrich daily life and bring bold beauty into any space. Each piece carries its own story, inviting you to imagine his art not only on the wall but also as part of your home or a meaningful gift to be treasured.
