In December of 2000, the United Nations General Assembly designated June 20 to recognize and celebrate the lives and contributions of refugees throughout the world. Since then, World Refugee Day has become an annual commemoration marked by a variety of events in over a hundred counties. This date was chosen to coincide with Africa Refugee Day. Each year the UN's High Commissioner for Refugees selects a theme and coordinates events across the globe.
