"The Shape of What Remains" Exhibition Featuring Sculpture by Zachary Leonard

Lanesboro Arts is pleased to present “The Shape of What Remains” an exhibition featuring contemporary sculpture by Zachary Leonard. Centering on broken, discarded, and unconventional materials as analogues for the human body, “The Shape of What Remains” invites viewers to consider how meaning and connection persists in what is typically overlooked, forgotten, or thrown away. Celebrate the exhibition with the Opening Reception at the Lanesboro Arts Gallery on Saturday, February 7th, from 5 – 7 pm with the artist, live music, and refreshments. The exhibition will run from February 7th through March 28th, 2026. Zachary Leonard is a Minneapolis-based artist, working mainly with repurposed materials and items many people would consider to be trash. “Many would view dejected objects as trash or disposable, but I find myself collecting these common materials,” Leonard says. He spent time working for the City of Vancouver as a Recycling Coordinator through AmeriCorps, and gained firsthand experience and understanding of the importance of recycling and sustainable living. “I also became aware of the circuit of human practices and behaviors that trash is bound with and expresses. As I got my hands dirty, the amount of trash, recyclables, and habits of people (including mine) became a palpable reality to me, and not an abstraction.” By scavenging and using these discarded materials which many people would consider worthless, Leonard creates sculptures, installations, and drawings which convey his message. In “The Shape of What Remains,” Leonard uses broken, discarded items from day to day life, transforming them into surfaces that mirror the human body while emphasizing texture and abstraction. Leonard’s sculptures emerge from a deep attunement to damage, repair, and the quiet histories carried by everyday objects. Accessible and free to the public, the Exhibition Gallery is located at 103 Parkway Ave N. in Lanesboro, Minnesota, and is open Thursday – Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm in February and March. The organization provides year-round arts programming and serves as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development, by providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Family Art Appreciation Workshop

Want to instill an appreciation for visual arts in your kids? Love art but not sure how to talk about it? Interested in exploring new creative opportunities as a family? Join artist and educator Cándida González and artist and designer Bayou Bay for a free family workshop on exploring art! This workshop will take place at 6 pm on Thursday, March 19th at the Lanesboro Community Center in the dining room (downstairs). Using Bayou’s art as inspiration, Cándida and Bayou will share five questions that invite art appreciators of all ages to dig deeper, make connections, and share about their experiences. This interactive workshop is based on on the critical response protocol for analyzing art, a teaching tool that invites parents and children to connect to art together. Participants are encouraged to register attend for free at the link on this page. Registration is not required, however it helps allow us to prepare to welcome you. About the Artists: Cándida González (they/them) is a mixed Puerto Rican multimedia artist from Minneapolis, Minnesota. They most often work in temporary altar installations using found objects, words, digital collage, photography and elements of the natural world. Their projects explore how the manipulation of basic elements into different configurations produce distinct energies/spells. They approach their work by centering at the intersection of art, activism, healing and personal/community empowerment. They are deeply invested in the concept of using art and community design as tools to wage love and healing and prioritize participatory installations. González has shown installation work at Public Functionary, Lanesboro Arts, Indigenous Roots Cultural Art Center, Franconia Sculpture Park and CLUES as well as managed community engagement for various public art projects nationwide. Bayou Bay (he/stardust pronouns) is a Twin Cities based mixed-media artist and designer born in St. Paul on the occupied lands of the Dakota & Anishinaabe peoples. His work embodies themes of nature from the micro to the cosmic, black and collective liberation, healing trauma, time, portals, geometry, symbols, setting intentions for affirmations, asking questions, and identity exploration. Soil Collection & Pinch Pot Workshop with Artist-in-Residence Chloe Bischoff

Join Artist-in-residence Chloe Bischoff for a Ceramic workshop at the St. Mane Theatre Second Floor Studio at 6 pm on Friday, April 1oth or at the Driftless Fiber Arts Collective at 2 pm on Sunday, April 12th. Contribute soil from a meaningful place to their residency project, and learn fundamentals of ceramic hand building by creating pinch pots to hold them! In this workshop, participants are invited to bring a small soil sample from a place in or around Lanesboro that holds personal meaning—your backyard, a favorite walking path, a family farm, the riverbank. Together, we will begin the process of transforming this earth into a ceramic material. Participants will hand build small pinch pots that will be used to fire and stabilize their soil samples, beginning the transformation into grog, a traditional ceramic additive made from fired earth. Folks who bring soil samples to these sessions are invited to transform their samples into tokens in workshops the following week (learn more here). As we work, participants will share stories about the places their soil comes from and reflect on their relationship to the land beneath our feet. This session serves as both a hands-on introduction to ceramic processing and a space for conversation, inviting participants to consider soil not as an inert material, but as an active presence shaped by geology, ecology, labor, and memory. No prior clay experience is necessary, just curiosity and a willingness to engage with place in a new way! Please bring a small soil sample (about 1 cup) from a meaningful location in or around Lanesboro. Transport your soil in a sealed container such as a Tupperware, glass jar, or zip-top bag. For best results, collect soil from a few inches below the surface rather than just the top layer. Surface soil often contains leaves, decomposing debris, and other organic matter. While small amounts are completely fine, soil with less organic material will process more smoothly,because any organic matter will burn away in the kiln, leaving behind only the mineral components of soil that give it its unique color and character. A small hand shovel, garden trowel, or even a sturdy spoon works well for digging. If your location has visible clay deposits, those make especially strong samples—but all soils are welcome. Keep an eye out for distinctive colors such as red, yellow, gray, or deep brown, as these mineral variations can subtly influence the texture and tone of your finished piece. If you’re unsure whether your soil will work, bring it anyway: we will explore its qualities together! Token Making Workshop with Artist-in-Residence Chloe Bischoff

The soil samples that were collected in the Soil Collection and Pinch Pot Workshop has been processed and fired into grog. Now, Artist-in-residence Chloe Bischoff invites participants to return to incorporate their transformed earth into a unique clay body! Join Chloe at the St. Mane Theatre Studio space at 6 pm on Friday, April 17th. Through a guided reflection, we will revisit the stories and memories connected to each soil sample before physically folding the grog into a small ball of clay. Participants will then hold the clay in their hands and gently squeeze it—forming a handheld token that carries both the mineral history of the land and the imprint of human touch. Each token will be unique in color, texture, and shape, reflecting the individuality of both place and person. Participants will have the opportunity to record a brief reflection about their soil’s significance, contributing to a collective archive of stories that will accompany a final community installation. The finished tokens will belong to their makers, serving as tactile reminders of the intimate and reciprocal relationship between Lanesboro’s earth and its residents. This workshop will be offered twice, once at the St. Mane Theatre Studio on Friday, April 17th at 6 pm and once again at the Driftless Fiber Arts Collective on Sunday, April 19th at 2 pm. The content of the workshop will be the same each time. Some additional grog will be available for folks who may not have been able to join for the first sessions. Lanesboro Arts is thrilled to present Annie Mack “Wolves of Impermanence” Concert and Conversation at the St. Mane Theatre on Saturday, April 18th, 2026 at 7:00 pm! Tickets are on sale now for $25 General Admission, $20 Lanesboro Arts Members. Annie Mack is a soulful singer and unflinching songwriter who writes from the gut and demands your attention. Raised in North Minneapolis and currently living in Rochester, MN, Annie Mack grew up in the 80s, influenced by the rich Twin Cities music scene. Inspired by her mother’s love of music, she started singing, performing at local joints. Although never intending it to be a career, it quickly became one. Artistically this work will examine relatable themes that directly impact so many in our community: death, love, grief, queerness, healing, activism, and critical hope in the midst of devastating times. “Wolves of Impermanence” is meant to elevate a relevant perspective and honor lived experience and legacy in a time when the human experience feels exceptionally fragile. Mack shares, “When thinking about the purpose of music and why I choose to make music, I want this album to leave listeners with a comfort and connection to impermanence that respects the mystery of life, while removing the stigma of death. Rooting difficult experiences in melody offers the community a potential conversation about what’s possible when moving beyond the expected. It’s also meaningful and immensely crucial to create new music that intersects a variety of genres beyond the standard traditions of what each genre affords independently.” This event is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
