\ \ \ \ \ Leader: Rudy Darling 530-272-6504 [email protected] This walk is designed for beginners, but more skilled birders are helpful and welcome. We’ll talk about how and where to find birds, and what to look for when you sight one. We meet in the parking lot of the Briar Patch Market on Sierra College Drive in Grass Valley. We walk for a little less than two miles and it usually takes about two hours. Fifteen to twenty different species are almost guaranteed, especially with enough sharp eyes and ears. It’s a nice walk up over the hill at Sierra College and back to the Briar Patch. Come on out and help us find and identify some birds. Be aware of the weather and dress appropriately. A little light drizzle won’t cause a cancellation, but a real rain storm will. Please contact Rudy if the weather is questionable.

\ \ \ \ \ Leader: Allen Bertke 530-913-2722 This winter trip offers fantastic opportunities to view waterfowl, and it’s one of the more reliable places near Nevada County to see Blue-winged Teal. Other species to expect for the day include passerines, Green-winged and Cinnamon Teal, herons, egrets, geese and many other wetland birds. Sometimes thousands of geese take flight over the water to the delight of birders. Bald Eagles are also regularly seen. We will spend some time walking the trails which are all well graded and on level ground, with one leading to an observation deck. After lunch, we’ll take a drive around the auto loop. Meet at Pleasant Valley Rd Park ‘n Ride at 8:00 am. Take Hwy 20 West from Grass Valley to the Pleasant Valley Rd. stoplight. Turn left into the Park ‘n Ride. It will take about an hour to get to Gray Lodge from there. There is a $5.00 fee at the Gray Lodge parking lot. Contact leader if weather is questionable.

\ \ \ \ \ Location: Cosumnes River Preserve Leader: Allen Bertke 530-913-2722 Cosumnes River Preserve is a wonderful venue for easy, flat walking trails. The flooded fields attract a wide range of dabbling ducks. Greater White-fronted Geese, Sandhill Cranes, dowitchers, Wilson’s Snipe, and yellowlegs should be present. Behind the Visitor’s center is a nice trail bordering wetlands that provides for passerines and more water birds. Common Yellowthroat, Say’s Phoebe, and several sparrow species reside there. Meet at the Indian Hill Park ‘n Ride on I-80 south of Auburn at 8:00 am. Take I-80 West to the Indian Hill/Newcastle Rd. Exit. Turn left to go over the freeway. The Park ‘n Ride will be on your left, next to the Valero station. It takes about an hour from there to get to Cosumnes.

Program: Photography by David Wong David has been an active professional photographer for the past decades as a teacher, fine art artist, workshop leader, critic, and curator, as well as a working professional. His teaching portfolio includes teaching summer intensive photography classes at Vassar College in New York, The Crocker Art Museum, classes in Lincoln, Sacramento, Nevada County, and workshops in his studio. He has exhibited his prints at shows and galleries in California and at galleries in New York, Art Works Gallery in Grass Valley, CA and at For the Love of Art Gallery in Auburn. David will show birds he has photographed from Costa Rica, East Africa, and locally. During his presentation, he will demonstrate his thinking in how to photograph birds and presenting them not only for identification but also in artful ways. His slide show will feature a variety of birds from raptors to bee-eaters posing and in flight. Birds in flight is a particular challenge for bird photographers and he will discuss his approach to capture the best photo during the presentation.

\ \ \ \ \ Great Backyard Bird Count Special Field Trip Leader: Rudy Darling 530-388-6335 (mobile)[email protected] Meet just outside the treatment plant gate at 10984 Riata Way, Auburn (but actually in Nevada County just off Combie Road). The LOP WWTP is probably the closest thing to a wetland refuge in western Nevada County with its ponds and Magnolia Creek bordered by oak woodlands and pastures. Expect waterfowl, wading birds, winter songbirds, and often a surprise visitor. Easy, flat walking. Call if in doubt about the weather. Contact Rudy if weather is doubtful.
