In an effort to foster a greater love for Northern Michigan’s natural resources, local organizations are coming together this June to host a week of free, public events commemorating "The Great Petoskey Passenger Pigeon Nesting of 1878". The week-long series, running from June 15 through June 19, 2026, will culminate in the unveiling of a new bronze monument dedicated to the extinct bird. The commemorative week is supported by numerous collaborating partners, including the Emmet County Historical Commission, Little Traverse History Museum, Little Traverse Conservancy, Mackinac State Historic Parks, Petoskey Regional Audubon Society, Inland Seas Education Association, Crooked Tree Arts Center, and The City of Petoskey. In addition to the scheduled events, the Little Traverse History Museum will be open all week from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to stop by to view a taxidermy passenger pigeon and a wall mural depicting the 1800’s hunting of the birds in the Petoskey area

Join Little Traverse Conservancy Director of Environmental Education Dylan Klinesteker and Inland Seas Education Association Grounds Supervisor Jess Piskor for a guided walk through the Offield Family Viewlands, exploring one of the most astonishing stories in North American natural history, the passenger pigeon. Once numbering in the billions, this bird was so deeply woven into the ecology of our northern Michigan landscape that its presence shaped the very forests we walk through today. On this walk, we’ll explore what made the passenger pigeon so ecologically extraordinary, how its relationship with our beech-maple forests sustained and was sustained by this region for millennia, and how the species’ catastrophic extinction in the early twentieth century sent ripple effects through ecosystems we are still reckoning with today. Come ready to walk, reflect, and look at the canopy above you with new eyes. Lost Birds is a documentary about the stories of five birds driven to extinction in modern times and sculptor Todd McGrain's project to memorialize them. The film follows the sculptor as he searches for the locations where the birds were last seen in the wild and negotiates for permission to install his large bronze sculptures there. ? The Making of the Petoskey Passenger Pigeon Monument Todd McGrain, Visual Artist and Documentary Filmmaker Join Todd McGrain, sculptor of the new Petoskey Passenger Pigeon Monument, for a special Coffee @ 10 talk. McGrain will share insights into the design and bronze casting process behind the monument, as well as the inspiration that shaped this meaningful public work. Throughout his career, McGrain has embraced art as a powerful form of public engagement—one that can shift perspectives and deepen our understanding of the world around us. Working across sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, and film, he weaves together visual art and storytelling to explore humanity’s impact on the environment and the creatures we share it with. McGrain is widely recognized for his ongoing Lost Bird Project, through which he has created permanent public memorials honoring bird species driven to extinction, raising awareness and inspiring reflection through art. This talk is included in a weeklong celebration of The Great Petoskey Passenger Pigeon Nesting of 1878. Join us for Connecting Women in Business luncheon on Tuesday, June 23, at North Central Michigan College Library Conference Room. Our speaker is Payton Heins, President and CEO of Northern Lakes Economic Alliance.  Payton leads efforts to transition our four-county area (Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Emmet counties) from a seasonal tourism economy into a diversified, year-round market. Payton will provide a snapshot of the latest quarterly trends, including the top economic issues currently on the minds of local community and business leaders. Learn about business outlook in our region, local economic data as well as barriers to growing business.  Payton joined NLEA in 2024 following her role as Director of Policy and Strategic Initiatives at the Michigan Office of Rural Prosperity. Her career spans local, state, and national levels, leading efforts in housing, workforce development, economic growth, and organizational capacity building. She previously managed statewide operations for a national community revitalization consultancy and has led complex redevelopment and small business initiatives across Michigan. Registration and networking is from 11:30am to noon. At noon the lunch buffet will be ready. The program will begin around 12:20 and end by 1pm. Cost is $35 for CWIB members and $45 for all others.  PLEASE NOTE - Registration closes Thursday, June 18 at 5:00 p.m. Any cancellations or no-shows after this time will be charged. Join the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society for an educational evening with local tribal community members Mae Wright, Emily Proctor and Jacob Keshick. All three will share stories and traditions related to water. _______________ Mae Wright - Mae is a member of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. She grew up in the northern parts of Michigan and now lives in Harbor Springs where she works for her sovereign nation’s government as their Tribal Historic Preservation Officer and NAGPRA Representative. This role holds many responsibilities including caring for ancestral burials and preserving cultural resources for future generations through collaborative work and education. Emily Proctor - Emily, MSW, BASW, earned her degrees from Michigan State University - School of Social Work. She is a citizen of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB) Harbor Springs, Michigan, and serves as a Tribal Extension Educator, Community, Food & Environment Institute for Michigan Tribal Nations, Tribal Communities, schools, community partners and various level government with her home office located in LTBB's homelands, Emmet County, Michigan State University Extension.  Jacob Keshick - Jacob is an Anishinaabe artist and enrolled member of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. He is a master of traditional birch bark and porcupine quill work, carrying on a generational cultural practice that he learned from his mother, National Heritage Fellow Yvonne Walker Keshick.
