Join us at the Muskegon Heritage Museum of Business and Industry for National Knit in Public Day. Did you know that Muskegon County had at least 4 knitting mills that produced knit goods for our area? Come learn about the commercial knitting industry in our county as well as hobby knitting. Bring your current knitting (or crochet) project down to the museum and get free admission. We will have information available about the historic knitting mills. You can even take our vintage hand crank knitting machine for a spin. Spaces will be available for you to knit (or crochet) with friends old (and new). No reservations needed. Our newest exhibit, Nature Cat: Backyard and Beyond, is now open. This 2-day camp, based on the ideas of the PBS show and exhibit, will teach young campers about being good caretakers of the environment. Campers will make bottle birdfeeders and go“birding” in the museum, they will make musical instruments out of things found in nature, go on a nature scavenger hunt, learn about types of clouds, and much more. This camp will be great for all nature lovers, lovers of Nature Cat, or just those looking to learn more about science and the world around them. $15 museum members, $20 non-members. For Ages 6-10. Presented by the Michigan Maritime Alliance Join us for the first annual Ships Along the Shoreline, a free family-friendly event celebrating Muskegon’s rich maritime history and waterfront heritage. Hosted on the Mart Dock campus on Saturday, June 20th, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, this event is presented in collaboration with the Muskegon Maritime Alliance, a newly formed group dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and sharing the stories that shaped Muskegon’s maritime legacy. Guests can enjoy a day along the shoreline featuring local vendors, food trucks, panel discussions, maritime displays, and opportunities to learn more about the people, vessels, industries, and waterways that helped build Muskegon’s identity as a historic port city. This event is free and open to the whole family. Come explore, learn, and celebrate Muskegon’s connection to the water! The Woodville Queen is a locally built, wood fired steam launch. The vertical boiler, single cylinder steam engine and pump were handcrafted in Norton Shores and installed in a salvaged steel hull lifeboat. Longtime MHMBI volunteer Adam Winters is the current caretaker, captain, and engineer. She can be seen steaming on the Grand River, Mona Lake, or Muskegon Lake on sunny summer afternoons. Be on the lookout for her distinctive canvas awning, smokestack, and steam whistle!

Muskegon County fathers enjoy free admission, while regular admission rates apply to all other visitors. Bring the whole family and make this Father’s Day one to remember with history, fun, and a heartfelt celebration of dad!
