Volunteers needed! Enjoy a morning on the Upper Platte while helping keep the river beautiful and trash-free. Benzie Conservation District needs your help to remove litter from the Upper Platte River. We’ll meet at Veterans Park for a light breakfast and to hand out cleaning supplies, then shuttle to Platte River Park, where we’ll exit at the end of our paddle. This program celebrates lyricism, color, and imagination through three beloved works inspired by song, landscape, and expressive freedom. Clara Schumann’s intimate Romances open the evening with warmth and elegance, followed by the expansive pastoral sweep of Vaughan Williams’ early piano quintet. After intermission, Schubert’s iconic “Trout” Quintet brings buoyant rhythms, radiant melodies, and virtuosic interplay–an ideal soundtrack for a Northern Michigan summer. Thanks to donors and a supporting grant from Michigan Humanities, OAC is able to present this world-class ensemble concert at a ticket price of only $10.00 Doors open at 6:00. Join us at the Old Baldy Trailhead at Arcadia Dunes: The C.S. Mott Nature Preserve for our annual dune wildflower hike! Volunteer Paula Dreeszen will share her knowledge and passion for native dune plants with spectacular views of Lake Michigan as the backdrop. The Basics This is a 2.5 mile hike with gradual elevation change on mostly firm trails. There is one steep climb up to Old Baldy–a beloved perched dune with panoramic views of Lake Michigan. Wildflowers you may see along the trail include Wood Lily, Pitcher’s Thistle, Sand Coreopsis, Hairy Puccoon and Common Milkweed, which is essential for the monarch caterpillar. Before the hike, feel free to check out our Dune Wildflowers Guide. What should I bring? Sturdy, close-toed shoes recommended. Consider bringing your camera or binoculars, a reusable water bottle, and snacks. Dress for the weather! Always check the forecast in advance. Sunscreen and bug spray for your safety and comfort. Location: Pines of Arcadia is located at the west end of Bischoff Road, just south of Arcadia. Follow the signs and park on the road and walk up the short drive to the studio, or watch for parking attendants if you need handicap parking.
