Join us for a guided 1/2-mile spring hike to celebrate the induction of Misty Acres: The Borwell Preserve into the national Old-Growth Forest Network (OGFN). The Basics Discover the quiet beauty of Misty Acres: the Borwell Preserve, where a meandering trail winds through the preserve’s more than 360 acres of forest, high above a deep ravine cut by the rushing waters of a tributary to the Betsie River. The secondary old-growth forest of sugar maples, black cherry, beech, and hemlock–along with stately white pines–is home to many bird species, including the charismatic Pileated Woodpecker and songsters like the Winter Wren. The woodland flora is subtly beautiful in the spring, with ferns just popping up, trees budding, and migratory bird species returning. Later in the season, as ferns leaf out, the understory is a lush tapestry of green. Wildflowers you may see along the trail include Common Trillium, Large-flowered Bellwort, Small Solomon-seal, White Baneberry, and Jack-in-the-Pulpit. Misty Acres: The Borwell Preserve will join more than 320 forests nationwide recognized in the Old-Growth Forest Network. A brief induction ceremony, including remarks by the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy staff and Leona Addie of the Old-Growth Forest Network, will take place at the Misty Acres Preserve Trailhead before the hike. ?What should I bring? Consider bringing your camera or binoculars, a reusable water bottle, and snacks. Dress for the weather! Always check the forecast in advance. Sunscreen and bug spray for your safety and comfort. Sturdy, close-toed shoes are recommended. This is not a dog-friendly event. Registration is required; updates or cancellations will be emailed to registered participants. Join the Manistee Audubon chapter for a walk along the universally accessible boardwalk at the Arcadia Marsh Nature Preserve! Volunteer leader Brian Allen will highlight the many bird species–including songbirds, shorebirds, wading birds, and raptors–that can be viewed from the boardwalk at this time of the year. The Basics The Arcadia Marsh is one of the most beautiful and diverse nature preserves under GTRLC’s care. The universally accessible boardwalk allows users of all abilities to enjoy this iconic property and experience the unique flora and fauna that call this place home. This will be a relatively easy walk on flat, even terrain. Before the hike, feel free to check out our Arcadia Marsh Bird and Botanical Guide for a preview of the species we’ll be on the lookout for. What should I bring? Consider bringing your camera and/or binoculars—birds and wildflowers will be abundant! Dress for the weather! Always check the forecast in advance. Sunscreen and bug spray for your safety and comfort. Because of sensitive wildlife, dogs are not allowed at this preserve. Directions We will meet at the M22 parking lot. Registration is required. Join us for a tour of the buildings and grounds at Mitchell Creek Meadows: The Don and Jerry Oleson Nature Preserve, led by our ambassadors Sally Proctor and Terrie Taylor. Surrounded by schools and neighborhoods—and in the heart of a watershed critical to the quality of our drinking water—the Conservation Center is more than our office: it’s a place where people can join together to build a more resilient, engaged and proactive community. Visitors can explore the 243-acre preserve’s diverse habitats, including wetlands, meadows and forest areas, and learn about our ongoing restoration work, while traversing the universally accessible Looyenga Family Trail. From the trail, you can also watch our invasive-plant-eating goats enjoying their job with gusto! This tour will include an inside look at the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy’s McMullen Family Conservation Center, Bob and Pauline Young Family Stewardship Workshop, and native plant greenhouse and goat barn. We welcome guests to learn about our mission and how we can each play a role in caring for our critical lands and waters. ?The Basics No prior knowledge is necessary—just come ready to learn something new! This event is suitable for all ages and abilities. Attendees will move along level indoor and outdoor surfaces for up to two hours. There is one set of stairs included in the tour, which is optional.
