Join the Manistee Audubon chapter for a walk along the universally accessible boardwalk at the Arcadia Marsh Nature Preserve! Volunteer leader Brian Allen will highlight the many bird species that can be viewed from the boardwalk at this time of the year. The Basics The Arcadia Marsh is one of the most beautiful and diverse nature preserves under GTRLC’s umbrella. The universally accessible boardwalk allows users of all abilities to enjoy this iconic property and experience the unique flora and fauna that call this place home. This will be a relatively easy walk on flat, even terrain. What should I bring? Consider bringing your camera and/or binoculars - birds and wildflowers will be abundant! Dress for the weather! Join us for an interpretive 1-mile, family-friendly hike to celebrate the induction of Arcadia Dunes: C.S. Mott Nature Preserve into the national Old-Growth Forest Network (OGFN). The Basics The preserve will be the 20th location to be recognized in Michigan and will join more than 270 forests nationwide recognized in the Old-Growth Forest Network. A brief ceremony, including remarks by the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy staff and the Old-Growth Forest Network, will take place at the Dryhill Trail Chestnut Loop trailhead before the hike. Protected in 2003, Arcadia Dunes is GTRLC’s largest nature preserve, at 3927 acres, and includes 20 miles of trail that winds through dunes, forests and many other landscapes. Adjacent working farms have also been permanently protected, ensuring the longevity of this area’s rich agricultural heritage. The property’s incredibly diverse matrix of secondary hardwood forest, coastal dunes, and open fields provides a wide range of wildlife habitat. It also offers thoughtfully designed recreation opportunities and experiences, from hiking and birding to mountain biking and hunting. What should I bring? Consider bringing your camera or binoculars, a reusable water bottle, and snacks. Dress for the weather! Always check the forecast in advance. Sunscreen and bug spray for your safety and comfort. The Oliver Art Center hosts the 2025 Great Lakes Pastel Society’s 2025 Members Small Works Exhibition in its Fisher Room gallery from June 7 – July 12. An opening reception will be held on June 7th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. This juried show features the work of some of the best pastelists in the region.  The Great Lakes Pastel Society seeks to promote the use of pastels and increase the public awareness of creative pastel painting as a fine art medium. Join us to explore the proposed ‘Excelsior’ Perch Lake addition to Upper Manistee Headwaters: The Milock Family Nature Preserve while learning about the Conservancy’s effort to add this 342-acre parcel to the preserve. Experience this unique natural habitat with Angie Bouma, GTRLC senior conservation ecologist, and Matt Ross, executive director of the Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park, who will introduce you to several of the hundreds of plant and animal species that call this remarkable place home. The Basics This proposed addition protects the entirety of a glacial lake, called Perch Lake, along with several ecologically rich bogs that support water quality within the north branch of the Manistee River and the Manistee River watershed. The 2.5-mile hike route is over primarily flat terrain in the woods. We will spend two hours together exploring the property’s diverse habitats, including mesic northern hardwood forest, early-successional forest, various wetlands and a well-managed, mature pine plantation. The forests host a diversity of high conservation value plants, and many unique wildlife species have been documented. What should I bring? Come prepared with hiking gear, water, and your curiosity!
