ARTIST BIO Christina Chang is a Chinese-Italian artist from the Boston area with a passion for creating oil paintings that defy the lines of traditional art. Her style is heavily influenced by her heritage, travels, and life experiences, and uses saturated colors to convey deep emotions. She paints in oils, creating landscapes and abstract paintings. Her art is contemporary and abstract and it tends to break conventional boundaries with its interplay of color, light, and energy. Art runs through her family heritage. Both of her parents have had significant art influence on her art. Christina’s Chinese and Italian background, identity and culture infuse everything she creates. Her father is a gifted architect who immigrated from Shanghai, China when he was 12 years old. He instilled a strong appreciation for aesthetic harmony and spatial design, while her Italian-American mother is a brilliant interior designer and artist whose eye for detail and understanding of form have influenced Christina’s artistic vision. It’s because of their strong artistic influence and full support that Christina began receiving formal art training starting at age 13. Chang continued her education, and received a BFA from Texas Christian University, where she was the recipient of the Nordon Fine Art Scholarship. During her time there she had the incredible opportunity to study art in Florence, Italy, and went on to receive a master's degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. When Christina is not in the studio painting, you can find her teaching and inspiring high school students to apply their artistic skills to create meaningful art and express themselves. Teaching art has been her second love. Chang has taught art to all ages, from kindergarteners to seniors. She loves encouraging others to pursue their art journey, and offers weekend workshops and artist retreats to empower even more people to explore and embrace their distinctive artistic styles. Welcome students, artists, makers, and the craft curious! Open Maker Hours are dedicated to anyone who would like to use either of our studio spaces to work independently on personal projects. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. For babies and non-verbal toddlers (4 months to 18 months) with an adult! If you would like to reduce frustration, give your baby the ability to express themselves, accelerate the development of speech, enhance early literacy skills and deepen the bond with your baby, this class is for you! You and your child will learn sign language through songs, stories, games, and play. Each class will build on the previous one, so practice at home is essential to improve your skills. Cell phones will not be permitted in class, as this is a one-on-one program to work with your child.  You will be learning as much as they are!   Meets for EIGHT Thursdays,  January 9th through March 6th.  (We will skip February vacation week).   In the Community Room. In a delicious blend of cultural criticism and personal narrative that explores our cognitive biases and the power, disadvantages, and highlights of magical thinking, Amanda Montell now turns her erudite eye to the inner workings of the human mind and its biases in her most personal and electrifying work yet. “Magical thinking” can be broadly defined as the belief that one’s internal thoughts can affect unrelated events in the external world: think of the conviction that one can manifest their way out of poverty, stave off cancer with positive vibes, thwart the apocalypse by learning to can their own peaches, or transform an unhealthy relationship to a glorious one with loyalty alone. Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the AIC. (See below for class details.) Book an appointment for a one-hour Tech Certification class within this three-hour window.  Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. Cost: $25 per person (payment is collected on the day of the class - card or cash) How to Register: Reserve an appointment for certification here. Types of Tech Certification: 3D Printer Certification 3D printers can create prototypes, replacement parts, toys, jewelry, and much more in a matter of minutes with minimal training to get started. Beginners welcome! No 3D modeling experience required. In this class, after going over the fundamental concepts of 3D printing, participants learn to find and prepare digital files for our Prusa 3D printers and each participant completes a print.  Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Prusa printers during AIC Open Maker Hours. Cricut Maker Certification The Cricut Maker can cut, draw, perforate, score, and even engrave. It cuts through more than 100 types of materials, including all kinds of fabric, textiles, paper, vinyl, craft foam, and wood veneer.  With the Cricut Maker, you can cut out dozens of identical felt hearts or a delicate lacy paper wedding invitation, and customize everything from a coffee mug to a tee shirt, in just a few clicks. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Cricut Maker machines during AIC Open Maker Hours. Laser Cutter Certification Laser Cutters can cut extremely accurate objects out of materials like wood, leather, colored acrylic, and even felt or paper to make everything from simple boxes to highly detailed engravings and complex 3-dimensional puzzles. Popular with artists, architects, manufacturers, robotics engineers, and small business owners, these powerful machines allow you to complete your projects lightning fast and repeat them with ease. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the laser cutter during AIC Open Maker Hours with supervision. ARTIST BIO Christina Chang is a Chinese-Italian artist from the Boston area with a passion for creating oil paintings that defy the lines of traditional art. Her style is heavily influenced by her heritage, travels, and life experiences, and uses saturated colors to convey deep emotions. She paints in oils, creating landscapes and abstract paintings. Her art is contemporary and abstract and it tends to break conventional boundaries with its interplay of color, light, and energy. Art runs through her family heritage. Both of her parents have had significant art influence on her art. Christina’s Chinese and Italian background, identity and culture infuse everything she creates. Her father is a gifted architect who immigrated from Shanghai, China when he was 12 years old. He instilled a strong appreciation for aesthetic harmony and spatial design, while her Italian-American mother is a brilliant interior designer and artist whose eye for detail and understanding of form have influenced Christina’s artistic vision. It’s because of their strong artistic influence and full support that Christina began receiving formal art training starting at age 13. Chang continued her education, and received a BFA from Texas Christian University, where she was the recipient of the Nordon Fine Art Scholarship. During her time there she had the incredible opportunity to study art in Florence, Italy, and went on to receive a master's degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. When Christina is not in the studio painting, you can find her teaching and inspiring high school students to apply their artistic skills to create meaningful art and express themselves. Teaching art has been her second love. Chang has taught art to all ages, from kindergarteners to seniors. She loves encouraging others to pursue their art journey, and offers weekend workshops and artist retreats to empower even more people to explore and embrace their distinctive artistic styles. Join us for an inside look into working with an agent and the beginning stages of the publishing process with Seth Fishman, Vice President and Literary Agent at The Gernert Company. The Gernert Company represents more than 500 authors and is a full-service literary agency with offices in New York and Los Angeles. Their client list is as broad as the market and they represent fiction, both literary and commercial (such as Liz Moore, John Grisham, Louise Penny, Cixin Liu), as well as general nonfiction and practical nonfiction genres.  In this presentation, Fishman will deep dive into what happens after you’ve signed with a literary agent. He will cover many topics, including but not limited to:  What agents are and are not looking for; How to submit your work to an agent and when; What to expect after you've both said "yes!" to working together; and What you can look forward to as you ready your work with an eye towards submitting to publishers, including the revision process and so much more.  This extended, 90-minute presentation, includes 30 minutes of Q&A. Virtual event: An Indigenous People’s History of the United States by Roxanne Dunar-Ortiz Book summary (from publisher's website): A New York Times Bestseller and the basis for the HBO docu-series Exterminate All the Brutes. Today in the United States, there are more than five hundred federally recognized Indigenous nations comprising nearly three million people, descendants of the fifteen million Native people who once inhabited this land. The centuries-long genocidal program of the US settler-colonial regimen has largely been omitted from history. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. For babies and non-verbal toddlers (4 months to 18 months) with an adult! If you would like to reduce frustration, give your baby the ability to express themselves, accelerate the development of speech, enhance early literacy skills and deepen the bond with your baby, this class is for you! You and your child will learn sign language through songs, stories, games, and play. Each class will build on the previous one, so practice at home is essential to improve your skills. Cell phones will not be permitted in class, as this is a one-on-one program to work with your child.  You will be learning as much as they are!   Meets for EIGHT Thursdays,  January 9th through March 6th.  (We will skip February vacation week).   In the Community Room. Kids--join us in the Storytime Room for several books about a fun winter theme! All family members are welcome to come in for the story portion of the Storytime; however, there is space for sixteen 3, 4 and 5 year olds to do crafts in the Craft Room.  After the first 16 participants, we will hand out Craft Kits to take home. ARTIST BIO Christina Chang is a Chinese-Italian artist from the Boston area with a passion for creating oil paintings that defy the lines of traditional art. Her style is heavily influenced by her heritage, travels, and life experiences, and uses saturated colors to convey deep emotions. She paints in oils, creating landscapes and abstract paintings. Her art is contemporary and abstract and it tends to break conventional boundaries with its interplay of color, light, and energy. Art runs through her family heritage. Both of her parents have had significant art influence on her art. Christina’s Chinese and Italian background, identity and culture infuse everything she creates. Her father is a gifted architect who immigrated from Shanghai, China when he was 12 years old. He instilled a strong appreciation for aesthetic harmony and spatial design, while her Italian-American mother is a brilliant interior designer and artist whose eye for detail and understanding of form have influenced Christina’s artistic vision. It’s because of their strong artistic influence and full support that Christina began receiving formal art training starting at age 13. Chang continued her education, and received a BFA from Texas Christian University, where she was the recipient of the Nordon Fine Art Scholarship. During her time there she had the incredible opportunity to study art in Florence, Italy, and went on to receive a master's degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. When Christina is not in the studio painting, you can find her teaching and inspiring high school students to apply their artistic skills to create meaningful art and express themselves. Teaching art has been her second love. Chang has taught art to all ages, from kindergarteners to seniors. She loves encouraging others to pursue their art journey, and offers weekend workshops and artist retreats to empower even more people to explore and embrace their distinctive artistic styles. Welcome students, artists, makers, and the craft curious! Open Maker Hours are dedicated to anyone who would like to use either of our studio spaces to work independently on personal projects. You are welcome to use our equipment (3D printers, Cricut Makers, and/or Sewing Machines) once you have been certified.*  Open Maker Hours is intended for those who are aged middle school plus. Children UNDER the age of 12 MUST be accompanied by an adult at all times. *To be certified on our equipment, please sign up for one of our Certifications or register for Sewing Fundamentals. If certified patrons would like to make an appointment with Abby to use the laser please sign up here. Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the AIC. (See below for class details.) Book an appointment for a one-hour Tech Certification class within this three-hour window.  Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. Cost: $25 per person (payment is collected on the day of the class - card or cash) How to Register: Reserve an appointment for certification here. Types of Tech Certification: 3D Printer Certification 3D printers can create prototypes, replacement parts, toys, jewelry, and much more in a matter of minutes with minimal training to get started. Beginners welcome! No 3D modeling experience required. In this class, after going over the fundamental concepts of 3D printing, participants learn to find and prepare digital files for our Prusa 3D printers and each participant completes a print.  Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Prusa printers during AIC Open Maker Hours. Cricut Maker Certification The Cricut Maker can cut, draw, perforate, score, and even engrave. It cuts through more than 100 types of materials, including all kinds of fabric, textiles, paper, vinyl, craft foam, and wood veneer.  With the Cricut Maker, you can cut out dozens of identical felt hearts or a delicate lacy paper wedding invitation, and customize everything from a coffee mug to a tee shirt, in just a few clicks. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Cricut Maker machines during AIC Open Maker Hours. Laser Cutter Certification Laser Cutters can cut extremely accurate objects out of materials like wood, leather, colored acrylic, and even felt or paper to make everything from simple boxes to highly detailed engravings and complex 3-dimensional puzzles. Popular with artists, architects, manufacturers, robotics engineers, and small business owners, these powerful machines allow you to complete your projects lightning fast and repeat them with ease. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the laser cutter during AIC Open Maker Hours with supervision.
