Artist’s Statement My “biblioquilts” and murals are created using distressed books that I salvage from basements, attics, and public libraries. I repurpose every part--covers, pages, spines--breathing new life into the materials with the addition of dyes, inks, and acrylics. In fact, quilts made from recycled materials are nothing new. But the combination of mixed media and repurposed books presents a new challenge. Each piece is comprised of thousands of “tiles” meticulously hand-cut from discarded or damaged books that no one has paid attention to in decades. Most were on their way to the dump. I also collaborate with families, libraries, and communities on commissioned pieces (murals, typically). My goal is to create original works of art that evoke warm memories for everyone. The books that my clients supply may be damaged, deaccessioned, or obsolete--but not forgotten. After earning a B.A. in Art from Northwestern University, and an M.A. in Biomedical Communications from the University of Texas, I spent 15 years producing award-winning biomedical illustrations, with an emphasis on traditional media, such as pen-and-ink, carbon dust, and watercolor. I then switched to strategic planning, marketing, and business development for the nonprofit sector--mostly because I wasn’t interested in creating artwork on a computer. What can I say? I’m old school. At this stage in my career, I’m thrilled to be getting back to my roots as a maker of fine crafts. Veterans on Film Stalag 17 1953, 120 minutes When his career was in full stride in the 1940s and 50s, there were few filmmakers who could match the sharpness of writer, producer, director Billy Wilder. He was born in Austro-Hungary, honed his screenwriting skills in Weimar-Era Berlin and fled the Nazis for Hollywood by way of Paris. His big break came with writing Ninotchka starring Greta Garbo 1939 followed by his directorial debut in 1942 with The Major and the Minor followed by Double Indemnity with Barbara Stanwyck in 1944. At war’s end he became an officer in the US Army’s Psychological War Unit and returned to Germany, where his mother and stepfather had died in the camps. With his mordant sensibilities and his innate familiarity with both Germans and GIs, Wilder made the documentary Die Todesmülen as part of the Denazification program and then Berlin Affair with Marlene Dietrich in 1948 followed by Stalag 17 in 1953. In the case of Stalag 17, Wilder adapted a Broadway play written by a former POW who had been held in Austria and used Hollywood “Germans” such as Sig Ruman and the renowned (notorious) director Otto Preminger as guard and commandant. For the American POWs, all of whom were sergeants (which was Air Corps policy for any personnel flying over occupied Europe) Wilder employed original Broadway cast members Harvey Lembeck and Robert Strauss alongside Peter Graves, Don Taylor and William Holden, who delivers an outstanding performance as a barracks wheeler-dealer suspected by the other prisoners of being an informer. At turns suspenseful, infuriating and strangely funny, Wilder’s film captures the sense of civilian soldiers trying to find some kind of normality when they are not at all sure if they are fated to be the last ones shot by a monstrous regime. Learn the basics of either the 3D printer, laser cutter, or Cricut Maker in a one-hour crash course at the Weston AIC. (See below for class details.) Book an appointment for a one-hour Tech Certification class within this four-hour window.  Class capacity: 1 or 2 participants per class. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Child(ren) must be accompanied by an adult; for laser cutter certification, participants must be ages 16+. Cost: $25 per person (payment is collected on the day of the class - card or cash) How to Register: Reserve an appointment for certification here. Types of Tech Certification: 3D Printer Certification 3D printers can create prototypes, replacement parts, toys, jewelry, and much more in a matter of minutes with minimal training to get started. Want to learn how? Sign up to this class at the Weston AIC to learn the basics of 3D printing. After going over the fundamental concepts of 3D printing, each student learns to find and prepare digital files for our Prusa 3D printers. Each student completes a print. Beginners welcome! No 3D modeling experience required. Upon completion of this class, certified individuals are permitted to use the AIC Prusa printers during the Weston AIC's Open Maker Hours. Cricut Maker Certification The Cricut Maker can cut, draw, perforate, score, and even engrave. It cuts through more than 100 types of materials, including all kinds of fabric, textiles, paper, vinyl, craft foam, and wood veneer.  With the Cricut Maker, you can cut out dozens of identical felt hearts or a delicate lacy paper wedding invitation, and customize everything from a coffee mug to a tee shirt, in just a few clicks. In this certification class, participants learn how to safely operate a laser cutter to cut and engrave wood. Participants are introduced to Lightburn software and create a customized keychain to keep. Artist’s Statement My “biblioquilts” and murals are created using distressed books that I salvage from basements, attics, and public libraries. I repurpose every part--covers, pages, spines--breathing new life into the materials with the addition of dyes, inks, and acrylics. In fact, quilts made from recycled materials are nothing new. But the combination of mixed media and repurposed books presents a new challenge. Each piece is comprised of thousands of “tiles” meticulously hand-cut from discarded or damaged books that no one has paid attention to in decades. Most were on their way to the dump. I also collaborate with families, libraries, and communities on commissioned pieces (murals, typically). My goal is to create original works of art that evoke warm memories for everyone. The books that my clients supply may be damaged, deaccessioned, or obsolete--but not forgotten. After earning a B.A. in Art from Northwestern University, and an M.A. in Biomedical Communications from the University of Texas, I spent 15 years producing award-winning biomedical illustrations, with an emphasis on traditional media, such as pen-and-ink, carbon dust, and watercolor. I then switched to strategic planning, marketing, and business development for the nonprofit sector--mostly because I wasn’t interested in creating artwork on a computer. What can I say? I’m old school. At this stage in my career, I’m thrilled to be getting back to my roots as a maker of fine crafts. Artist’s Statement My “biblioquilts” and murals are created using distressed books that I salvage from basements, attics, and public libraries. I repurpose every part--covers, pages, spines--breathing new life into the materials with the addition of dyes, inks, and acrylics. In fact, quilts made from recycled materials are nothing new. But the combination of mixed media and repurposed books presents a new challenge. Each piece is comprised of thousands of “tiles” meticulously hand-cut from discarded or damaged books that no one has paid attention to in decades. Most were on their way to the dump. I also collaborate with families, libraries, and communities on commissioned pieces (murals, typically). My goal is to create original works of art that evoke warm memories for everyone. The books that my clients supply may be damaged, deaccessioned, or obsolete--but not forgotten. Age restrictions: 3D printing and Cricut certification classes can be adapted for children 6-12 years old. Artist’s Statement My “biblioquilts” and murals are created using distressed books that I salvage from basements, attics, and public libraries. I repurpose every part--covers, pages, spines--breathing new life into the materials with the addition of dyes, inks, and acrylics. In fact, quilts made from recycled materials are nothing new. But the combination of mixed media and repurposed books presents a new challenge. Each piece is comprised of thousands of “tiles” meticulously hand-cut from discarded or damaged books that no one has paid attention to in decades. Most were on their way to the dump. I also collaborate with families, libraries, and communities on commissioned pieces (murals, typically). My goal is to create original works of art that evoke warm memories for everyone. The books that my clients supply may be damaged, deaccessioned, or obsolete--but not forgotten. After earning a B.A. in Art from Northwestern University, and an M.A. in Biomedical Communications from the University of Texas, I spent 15 years producing award-winning biomedical illustrations, with an emphasis on traditional media, such as pen-and-ink, carbon dust, and watercolor. I then switched to strategic planning, marketing, and business development for the nonprofit sector--mostly because I wasn’t interested in creating artwork on a computer. What can I say? I’m old school. At this stage in my career, I’m thrilled to be getting back to my roots as a maker of fine crafts.
