Presented in partnership with the Wellesley Historical SocietyJoin historian Jeffrey Boutwell for a compelling look at the life and legacy of George S. Boutwell, a Massachusetts statesman whose career spanned some of the most pivotal decades in American history. From humble beginnings to becoming the Commonwealth’s youngest governor, Boutwell emerged as a leading voice in the formation of the Republican Party and a close ally to Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. During the Civil War and Reconstruction, he championed the 14th and 15th Amendments, led the push to impeach Andrew Johnson, and helped shape the nation’s financial system as Secretary of the Treasury. His later work in the U.S. Senate included investigating white supremacist violence, and in his 80s, he stood with Andrew Carnegie and Mark Twain in opposing U.S. imperialism in the Philippines.Drawing on extensive research and personal ties to his subject, Jeffrey Boutwell paints a vivid portrait of a principled politician whose vision for equality, democracy, and economic reform continues to resonate today.Jeffrey Boutwell is a writer, historian, and public policy specialist with a forty-year career spanning journalism, government, and international scientific cooperation. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from MIT and a B.A. in history from Yale University.
