Join us for a Madhubani Painting Workhop on Thursday, November 14, at 7PM! The workshop led by artist and educator Sunanda Sahay will explore the traditional techniques and themes of Mithila/Madhubani art, a popular style of folk painting from her native northern India.  Participants will have the opportunity to both learn about the history of this distinctive art form and create their own take on Madhubani paintings using paint on paper. Supplies will be provided by the presenter.  Registration is required. This workshop is for adults (18+) only. About Sunanda: After earning a Masters in English literature and briefly working with the UN Mission in Mozambique, Sunanda now lives in Acton, MA, with her two sons and husband. She retains her lifelong association with Mithila where her parents were practicing doctors. She continues to revisit Madhubani periodically, refining her techniques and rediscovering the endless assortment of themes. Additionally, she is now trained in other folk and tribal art forms like Warli (Maharastra), Kalmakari (Andhra), Gond (MP), Patchitra (Orissa) and Phad (Rajasthan), Lippan(Gujrat) and many more. Join us on Monday, November 18, at 7PM for a talk on Boston Light with retired lightkeeper Sally Snowman! Boston Light – the first established Light Station in colonial America – began lighting the way for safe navigation into the fledging maritime port of Boston in 1716. The Fresnel Lens in the lantern room and fog signal apparatus situated on Little Brewster Island at the entrance to Boston Harbor continues as an active Coast Guard maintained aid-to-navigation, today. However, its notoriety in the maritime community as the “the last manned Coast Guard Light Station” in the country has come coming to closure with the retirement of Sally Snowman, its 70th and last keeper. A power-point presentation provide photos of Boston Light’s 307 years of history and a few photo anecdotes of Sally’s experiences as a 21st Century Keeper. About Sally: Sally Snowman, Ph.D., Keeper of Boston Light 2003-2023, is an educator, author, and the USCG Boston Light historian. Welcome to the ESL Conversation Group at the Goodnow Library! Come join us for some conversation in a friendly and relaxed setting. The group provides an opportunity for learners to practice their English speaking skills. The group meets every Tuesday from 10AM - 11:30AM. No registration required. Any adult that wishes to practice their English speaking skills are welcome We recommend that you have advanced beginner speaking skills. If you can have a basic conversation in English, then you likely have advanced beginner speaking skills The group is led by Diane Juliano. Diane has over 25 years of experience as English as a Second Language Teacher. Weekly topics will revolve around American culture and everyday life scenarios. The Massachusetts Library Collaborative's 50+ Job Seekers Group meets via Zoom on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, from 9:30am to 11:30am. Informal networking takes place from 9am to 9:30am and 11:30am to noon. If you are unemployed and actively looking, underemployed, seeking a new career direction, re-entering the job market after a long employment gap, or recently retired and looking for your "Encore Career," this networking group program is perfect for you! Remember, 85% of jobs are found through networking! Join us in a professional forum for networking with peers in a safe and comfortable environment conducive to developing new relationships and developing skills and strategies to help in your career transition. Each meeting features a new topic. Meetings include a presentation and interactive workshop on topics relevant to career transition, guest speakers, access to hiring managers, small group breakout rooms to network, and 1-on-1 coaching guidance. Participating on a regular basis will give job seekers the many tools and strategies needed for a successful job search. Each biweekly meeting is facilitated by Deborah Hope, MBA, PCIC, an experienced executive career coach. Deborah is a former Fortune 500 executive, investment banker and entrepreneur. She transitioned to executive coaching over 12 years ago. Deborah has coached with Harvard Business School Executive Education programs and the Massachusetts Conference for Women. This month, we'll discuss What's Eating Jackie Oh, by Patricia Park. We'll talk about books, eat good snacks, and hang out. Jackie Oh is done being your model minority. She’s tired of perfect GPAs, PSATs, SATs, all of it. Jackie longs to become a professional chef. But her Korean American parents are Ivy League corporate workaholics who would never understand her dream. Jackie works at her grandparents’ Midtown Manhattan deli after school and practices French cooking techniques at night—when she should be studying. But the kitchen’s the only place Jackie is free from all the stresses eating at her—school, family, and the increasing violence targeting the Asian community. Then the most unexpected thing happens: Jackie becomes a teen contestant on her favorite cooking show, Burn Off! Soon Jackie is thrown headfirst into a cutthroat TV world filled with showboating child actors, snarky judges, and gimmicky “gotcha!” challenges. All Jackie wants to do is cook her way.
