Artist Statement – Suzanne Michaels, PhD My photographic journey began in high school when I took my first and onlyphotography course. Over the years I benefited from a few brief workshops,but basically, I am self-taught as a photographer. My training in culturalanthropology and my experiences as a family therapist, however, haveenriched the way I observe and see.Initially, I worked in black and white, printing my own photos. I then shiftedto color slides, and years later, to digital. I am presently revisiting the use ofblack and white images, stimulated by the artistry of such great black andwhite photographers as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andre Kertesz, andSebastio Salgado.In my work, I frequently focus on patterns and textures found in nature andin the built environment. I also enjoy photographing people as they carry ontheir daily lives or look up as I engage with them.During my professional careers – as a therapist, and later as an academicand research sociologist – photography served as a creative outlet. Nowretired, I am devoting more time to photography as well as exploring othermediums.Rather than a single narrative or series, this show invites you to travel withme through time and space – landscapes and portraits from New England,France, Ireland, Laos, Morocco, and Portugal. The Stockbridge Writers will meet on Zoom  on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  This program is free and open to the public.  All writing levels are welcome. Led by Stockbridge resident Ramelle Pulitzer, MEd., writing sessions will gently follow the outline set in the book Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg. Ramelle writes on a regular basis for her website New View Tours. She looks forward to coordinating and leading a group of writers ready to explore writing practice as a way to improve and enjoy expressing oneself.

Leslee Carswell- My artwork, be it photography, painting or collage embraces a very simple notion: how best to break up space to achieve more serendipity and greater intuition on the page. Though simple in theory, this is not so easy to achieve. I work to make use of both positive and negative space to create interest, lyricism, elegance and ambiguity. Each element informs the whole. This whole, with luck, is filled with an air of intrigue. Breaking up space to me has a direct correlation to music. Rhythm, texture, points of emphasis and silence all play their parts. Music that inspires me includes solo piano work by Debussy, Ravel, Mompou and of course, Schubert and Beethoven. Working with limited and unadorned materials, I enhance the initial compositions with color, subtle but emphatic line work and texture. For me, painting abstractly removes restraints. I find the simplicity of line and subsequent forming of shapes quietly liberating.
