About the book: The Great Books discussion is structured so that the evening’s selected reading is discussed in a think tank environment with the intention of gaining insight from other readers that one would not have by reading alone. The seminar facilitator asks questions of the participants about the reading selection and helps the discussion stay focused. Our main goal is to have fun and take many interpretations from the group in order to enjoy a greater understanding of a selected reading.Discussions are open to everyone and free of charge. On Wednesdays, the Writing Room meets virtually. In-person meetings have resumed for Saturday sessions.On these mornings we will meet via videoconference at our regular time: 9:30-12:30, using the exact same structure as we would if we were gathered around the table in the Watson Room at Forbes. The only difference will be that we will be connecting by videoconference, rather than face-to-face.Here's all you need to join the Writing Room via Videoconference:Join us in the Virtual Writing Room on Zoom. I will come online 15 minutes before our starting time (at 9:15) to answer any questions you might have. You will have the option to have your camera off or on, so you can join however you feel most comfortable.The sessions will NOT be recorded, and you have the option to be visible or not, so your privacy will be preserved just as it would if we were meeting at the library.How the Writing Room Works: each session opens at 9:30 sharp with brief hellos, followed by the pleasure of getting work done in the company of others. At 11:45 we check in about how the work went and make announcements. At (roughly) 12, anyone who wishes to read for the group does briefly, without critique or spoken response. We're done by 12:30.Writers are welcome to come for all or part of the session. No need to register in advance.

Join certified children’s yoga instructor Lorrie Murenzi as we explore movement and fun! Children will be invited to practice foundational yoga poses and breathing exercises, while stretching and strengthening their bodies and minds. Class will be geared towards ages 6-9, but parents and siblings are welcome.Participants are welcome to bring water and/or a yoga mat! We will also have mats available to borrow. This workshop will also be held on April 24 and May 22.Please note that each child's parent or guardian will need to sign a waiver before the class begins. The waivers will be available at the workshop.

Join us for a reading and Q&A with Plainfield author and photographer AgathaO (alter ego of historian Pleun Bouricius).Bouricius will be reading selections from her newly-published collection of essays and photos, Northern Byways and Other Essays from the Road, a “windshield survey of the lay of the land across the thinly populated expanses that most of us Americans and Canadians profess to love.” She and her travel companion, the Carpenter, bring you along on a journey of discovery of how we have shaped our landscapes, and raises questions about what we are doing with the vast riches we have inherited from our forebears. Bouricius has meticulously documented her online research, and the volume is also a commentary on the value of books, reading, and research in a world where facts are currency and seemingly malleable at the same time. There will be time for conversation and signing to follow the reading.About the Author: AgathaO is the alter ego of photographer/writer/historian Pleun Bouricius. She is the author of four collections of photographs and short essays, Northern Highways and Other Essays from the Road (2024), Born Wet (2022), Beech: The Fall and Rise of a Forest (2019), and The Bog (2017). Pleun is also an independent public historian and the principal of Swift River Press Public History and Communications. Previously, she was Assistant Director of Mass Humanities and Lecturer in History and Literature at Harvard University. She has a BA in history, women’s studies, and photography from Montclair State College, New Jersey, and a PhD, in the History of American Civilization (American Studies), from Harvard University.
