First Fridays: Rhythms of Africa with Sidy Maïga & Afrimanding Friday, May 2, 2025, 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM $10 for members | $20 for non-members. A Celebration of Rhythm and Culture Experience an unforgettable evening of music, culture, and connection at the New Bedford Whaling Museum's First Fridays series. This special program features acclaimed Malian percussionist Sidy Maïga and his ensemble, Afrimanding, as they take you on a journey through the rich traditions of West African drumming and the vibrant global rhythms it inspires. Sidy Maïga, celebrated for his ability to bring people together through the universal language of rhythm, blends traditional Malian music with influences from Latin, blues, and Brazilian styles. This is more than a performance—it’s a celebration of community, storytelling, and the joy of music. Event Highlights 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM: Welcome & Museum Exploration Begin your evening with exclusive after-hours access to the Museum’s galleries and exhibitions. We invite guests to explore connections between African and maritime cultures. 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM: Live Performance by Sidy Maïga & Afrimanding Immerse yourself in the powerful rhythms and high-energy artistry of Sidy Maïga and Afrimanding. Their dynamic performance will transport you to the heart of West African musical traditions, enriched by global influences. 7:30 PM – 8:05 PM: Drum Circle Workshop Tap into your own rhythm in an interactive drumming session led by Sidy and Afrimanding. Learn the basics of djembe drumming in this fun and engaging workshop. No experience necessary—drums will be provided! 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM: Meet the Artists & Reception Enjoy light refreshments as you connect with Sidy Maïga and his ensemble in an intimate post-performance reception. Hear stories from Sidy’s journey as a musician, educator, and cultural ambassador. About Sidy Maïga Born and raised in Mali, Sidy Maïga honed his drumming skills under the guidance of master djembefolas and toured nationally with acclaimed troupes before relocating to Rhode Island in 2006. A key figure in New England’s music scene, Sidy is renowned for his ability to weave Malian traditions with global styles. He is the founder of the West African Dance and Drum Festival: Afrika Nyaga, a graduate of Berklee College of Music, and a recipient of the prestigious MacColl-Johnson Fellowship.
