18th Annual Needham's Art in Bloom                          Saturday March 14   9am-5pm LIVE Floral Demonstration at 11:00 AM                         Sunday March 15   1 pm-4pm LIVE Floral Demonstration at 1:30 PM                         SILENT AUCTION OF SELECT FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS GOING ON ALL WEEKEND! Needham’s Art in Bloom, now in its 18th year, was modeled after the annual spring Art in Bloom presented by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Beth Shalom Garden Club’s goal, inspired by Sue Kaplan and Allison Shapiro, was to organize a community event that would engage people of all ages, interests, and life experiences. Garden club members are paired with artwork by talented Needham High School art students for floral interpretation. Needham’s Art in Bloom continues to grow with the dedication of garden club members, Needham High School Fine Arts Department staff with faculty coordinator Maria Sartori, and the support from the participants of Needham and Kalmia Garden clubs. This event has earned several awards. Nationally, The Goldin Foundation for Excellence has recognized the annual exhibit with an Exemplary Project Award. In addition, it has been presented with Special Achievement and civic Public Relations awards from The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts. The Young Adult Librarian, Erin, has a ready-made craft for tweens and teens!   Register for this program to bring home a bag for yourself to be completed on your own time :) Are you between the ages of 12 and 18?  Like to be creative?  See what sorts of things you can create with a little string, some beads, and a few keychain loops! Register for this easy (as easy as you make it) Take and Make kit! Registration is limited to the first 20 people at the moment, each participant will need to sign up individually for a kit. We'll be meeting most Mondays after school in the Needham Community Room for Common Ground Conversations and Brain Break Activities (and yes, the snacks will be coming back too). To be able to facilitate more meaningful conversations, we've decided to mix it up this year with 2 different sessions! High Schoolers will meet first from 2:45 - 3:30 pm and Middle Schoolers are welcome to join in from 3:30 - 4:15 pm We'll also have some tables set up at the back of the room in case teens would like to come down and do their homework inside the Community Room. Bob Begin - "The Search for the Northwest Passage" The Northwest Passage is a sea route that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, through the Arctic Ocean. For centuries, Great Britain and other sea faring nations sought to find a clear passage through this area of massive ice, frozen waters, and frigid temperatures. Great Britain, with her insatiable appetite for new territories and commerce launched several expeditions to map and explore as early as the 1600s. Interest in achieving this goal soon became an obsession among England’s Naval and scientific leaders. Three expeditions in the 19th century yielded significant progress in mapping and transiting through some of the passage. By far the most famous was that of Sir John Franklin’s journey with HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. These two vessels, which had started with enough supplies for three years, ended with the loss of both ships and the entire crew of 129. Following this failure, several more rescue searches failed to find any trace of the ships or their crews. Countless books, including Erebus, Kingdom of Ice and The Man Who Ate His Boots reveal much of the struggle and hardships endured by these men. Interest in their fates was constant. The wrecks of both ships were found in 2014 and 2016. Artificial Intelligence (AI): Learning, Life and Values, a four part series AI is all around and used by us everyday. In this four part series, many facets of AI will be explained, explored and questioned. This series is co-sponsored by the Lane Lyceum of First Parish in Needham and the Needham Free Public Library, and will be held in the Community Room as well as online. We encourage people to join us as this topic is so relevant to not only our lives, but those of future generations. Part 1: What is AI — And Why Should We Care?  What is artificial intelligence in its various forms? Why has it come upon the scene with such fervor in the last few years? How is it already affecting lives? Is it automating jobs away, or is it merely a slop generator? How might I view what I personally create, in the face of this new technology being thrust upon us? In this first of four sessions, we’ll explore all these questions, defining, playing with, and critiquing artificial intelligence. Nick Zufelt is an Instructor in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. Primarily teaching computer science, Nick regularly experiments with new techniques in the classroom, seeking to iteratively find effective new ways of teaching. This includes extensive re-envisioning of the Computer Science (CS) curriculum, co-directing the ethi{CS} project in the Tang Institute, and most recently efforts to understand and leverage generative AI in the classroom. Nick leads professional development efforts both on-campus and beyond, helping teachers and students to best incorporate ethical inquiry and utilize AI in their work.
