During his richly illustrated PowerPoint presentation, Bill Gette will review the species of birds typically seen at local feeding stations and in backyard sanctuaries. He will discuss aids to field identification (e.g., size, body shape, bill shape, behavior), times of occurrence, ranges, food preferences, and other exciting facts about these amazing animals that not only survive, but prosper, in our severe New England winters. Since bird feeders can be a very important part of backyard sanctuaries, Bill will review the different types of feed you can offer (e.g., seeds, suet, worms) and discuss which types of feed are best for the species you want to attract. Bill will highlight how the ranges and populations of many bird species have changed in recent years due to climate change, changes in land use, and development. Bill will also suggest things you can do to enhance your sanctuaries (e.g., reduce the size of your lawn, plant shrubs and flowers that provide shelter and food, restrain domestic animals). Step into a world where sound becomes color and rhythm takes shape! In this immersive art experience, participants will explore the the concept of synesthesia, the blending of the senses-through the lens of art and music. Through guided listening and free-flowing abstraction, we’ll paint the pulse of a melody, give form to harmony, and let color dance with sound. Using a variety of materials, colors, textures, and shapes, participants will translate musical rhythms and tones into visual form, discovering new ways to express emotion and movement. Through open discussion and sharing, students will deepen their understanding of how sound can ignite visual creativity and leave with both knowledge of synesthetic artists and a personal artwork born from music itself. No art experience needed—just curiosity and a willingness to let your senses intertwine. We will supply watercolors, sharpies and paper, I will bring other materials you can borrow such as pastels and markers. If you have any favorite mediums you love to use, please bring them! Lauren Lamenza Naylor is a kind, compassionate and humorous visual artist with a professional background in illustration, teaching land and aquatic yoga, and expressive movement. She has worked in local public schools teaching art and dance. She holds a BA in Art education from Framingham State University, and a certificate in Communications Design from Parsons School of Design. Age 16 and up. Limit 15. Author Marc Millon discusses how his book, Italy in a Wineglass: The Story of Italy Through Its Wines, came about and highlights the intricate and intimate links between Italian history and Italian wine. He then looks at some of the major themes covered in the book: wines in antiquity; the triumph of Christianity; Risorgimento and Unification; back to the future, Italian wines today . . . and tomorrow. Marc was born in Mexico, with a mother from Hawaii via Korea and an anthropologist father from New York via Paris.
