The Library 50+ Job Seekers Networking Group meets via Zoom on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, from 9:30am to 11:30am. Informal networking takes place from 9am to 9:30am and 11:30am to noon. If you are unemployed and actively looking, underemployed, seeking a new career direction, re-entering the job market after a long employment gap, or recently retired and looking for your "Encore Career," this networking group program is perfect for you! Remember, 85% of jobs are found through networking! Join us in a professional forum for networking with peers in a safe and comfortable environment conducive to developing new relationships and developing skills and strategies to help in your career transition. Each meeting features a new topic. Meetings include a presentation and interactive workshop on topics relevant to career transition, guest speakers, access to hiring managers, small group breakout rooms to network, and 1-on-1 coaching guidance. Participating on a regular basis will give job seekers the many tools and strategies needed for a successful job search. Each biweekly meeting is facilitated by Deborah Hope, MBA, PCIC, an experienced executive career coach. Deborah is a former Fortune 500 executive, investment banker and entrepreneur. She transitioned to executive coaching over 12 years ago. Deborah has coached with Harvard Business School Executive Education programs and the Massachusetts Conference for Women. She has been trained or certified in a variety of coaching models and assessment tools. Deborah has facilitated 50+ job seekers networking groups since 2016. OFFSITE - Notre-Dame de Paris: Disaster / Salvation / Rebirth

**This event will now take place at the Community Center, 39 Marrett Road, Lexington, MA The world watched, horrified, as fire ravaged the ancient Notre-Dame Cathedral in April 2019. The very next day the President of France, Émmanuel Macron, vowed that the treasured building --- one of the symbols of the entire nation --- would be reopened in just five year’s time, following the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Many expressed doubt, given the gravity of the damage, that this was an achievable goal, or that the structure could even be saved at all. The story of how that goal was met --- with glorious results --- is a chronicle of vision, organizational leadership, armies of skilled craftspeople, unprecedented public philanthropy, and a global will to rescue one of the world’s greatest architectural treasures. Architectural historian (and Winchester resident) John McConnell will present an illustrated lecture on how this great story unfolded, and the world came to see the renewed cathedral as it hadn’t been seen in close to 800 years. Registration is suggested to plan for seating and to be notified of any changes. About our speaker: John McConnell earned a B.A. degree in English at Michigan State University in 1970, followed by a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University in 1975. He has taught American Architectural history at Boston College since 1979. In addition, he has been a lecturer in architectural history at the Harvard Graduate School of Design since 1987, an architecture lecturer-in-residence for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and scores of other groups. He is much sought-after for his informative walking tours of Boston neighborhoods. John is a principal of McConnell+Partners Architects Inc in Boston. Founded in 1987, the firm specializes in residential and small-scale institutional and commercial design, as well as historically sensitive additions and renovation of older buildings. Prior to founding the firm, John worked for Boston architectural firms, chiefly Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott, where he was the designer for several projects including the Fye Laboratory at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and a major renovation and organ installation at the historic Old South Church at Boston's Copley Square. In addition to being a practicing architect, he has devoted himself to oil painting since 1990 (www.JohnMcConnellArtist.com), specializing in traditional landscape painting. He is currently represented by a number of art galleries in Maine, Massachusetts, Virginia and Washington DC. In addition to the above, John is the author of Courthouses of the Commonwealth: A History of Superior Courthouse Architecture in Massachusetts (UMass Press, 1984,) and contributor to Shingle Style Houses, Then and Now (Schiffer Press 2006, and Green Residences, Schiffer Press 2008.) Finally, he has been Chair of the Winchester Cultural Council, vice-president of the board of the Griffin Museum of Photography, a Director of the Winchester Historical Society and President of the Jumelage Association (with sister city Saint-Germain-en-Laye, in France) in Winchester, Massachusetts, where he resides. VIRTUAL - America’s Failed Response to the Opioid Crisis with Author Shoshana Walter

Join us for a special conversation between award-winning journalist Shoshana Walter and bestselling and award-winning author Barbara Kingsolver as they chat about Walter’s book Rehab: An American Scandal. In this work, Walter, a Pulitzer finalist, exposes the country’s failed response to the opioid crisis, and the malfeasance, corruption, and snake oil which blight the drug rehabilitation industry. Today, more people have access to treatment than ever before. So why isn’t it working? The answer is that in America—where anyone can get addicted—only certain people get a real chance to recover. Despite record numbers of overdose deaths, our default response is still to punish, while rehabs across the United States fail to incorporate scientifically proven strategies and exploit patients. In this book, you’ll find the stories of four people who represent the failures of the rehab-industrial complex, and the ways our treatment system often prevents recovery. April is a black mom in Philadelphia, who witnessed firsthand how the government’s punitive response to the crack epidemic impeded her mother’s recovery—and then her own. Chris, a young middle-class white man from Louisiana, received more opportunities in his addiction than April, including the chance to go to treatment instead of prison. Yet the only program the judge permitted was one that forced him to perform unpaid back-breaking labor at for-profit companies. Wendy is a mother from a wealthy suburb of Los Angeles, whose son died in a sober living home. She began investigating for-profit treatment programs—yet law enforcement and regulators routinely ignored her warnings, allowing rehab patients to die, again and again. Larry is a surgeon who himself struggled with addiction, and would eventually become one of the first Suboxone prescribers in the nation, drawing the scrutiny of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Her reporting has been honored as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and Selden Ring, and she has won the Knight Award for Public Service, the Edward R. She started her work on the treatment system at The Center for Investigative Reporting, where her work appeared in The New York Times Magazine, in newspapers, and on NPR stations across the country. She is based in Oakland, California. About the Guest Host: Barbara Ellen Kingsolver is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, essayist, and poet. Her widely known works include The Poisonwood Bible, the tale of a missionary family in the Congo, and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, a nonfiction account of her family's attempts to eat locally. In 2023, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the novel Demon Copperhead. Her work often focuses on topics such as social justice, biodiversity, and the interaction between humans and their communities and environments. **RESCHEDULED - This event was rescheduled from March 20th Bill Gette has led many travel adventures to West Texas, the area along the Rio Grande River from El Paso to Big Bend National Park. Much of this area is Chihuanhuan Desert. Annually, the region receives only 9.3 inches of rain (compared to 50 inches in Massachusetts). Most people think of deserts as barren landscapes with little wildlife. In fact, deserts are teeming with life, and the Chihunhuan Desert is considered one of the most biologically diverse. During his PowerPoint presentation, Bill will take you on a tour of West Texas with stops at an urban landscape in El Paso, Lake Balmorhea, the Davis Mountains, and Big Bend National Park. In each of these locations, Bill will show you the impact that available water and elevation have on the diversity of life. At Rio Bosque Wetlands Park in El Paso, Bill will show you the many species of water birds that flock to the wetlands created by outflow from a wastewater treatment facility. Black-necked Stilts, American Avocets, Wilson’s Phalaropes, Northern Shovelers, and Cinnamon Teal are commonly seen there. At Lake Balmorhea, Bill will show you not only water birds but also species typical of the surrounding desert scrub, including Black-tailed Jackrabbit, Desert Cottontail, and Pyrrhuloxia. In the “sky islands” of the Davis Mountains, he will show you how increases in elevation transform desert scrub into grasslands and then in mixed forests of conifers and hardwoods. Bill will conclude his talk with a virtual tour of Big Bend National Park. You will see the beautiful desert landscape forged by volcanic activity, visit Santa Elena Canyon carved by the Rio Grande River, and hike through the caldera of an extinct volcano and high into the Chisos Mountains.
