Join our friends from the Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston (ATMoB) for a brief lecture on what's currently in the night sky, and then we will have a chance to look through their telescopes. To allow for the best viewing of the night sky, please bring a small flashlight. Any flashlights should be low-power and covered with a dark-red filter (a couple layers of red cellophane will work). Please do not use LED lights on headbands or flashlight apps on smartphones (unless the app allows the color of the light to be made dark red). Registration is required. You will receive a confirmation email upon registering for this event. If you are unable to attend, please cancel via that email so that someone on the waiting list can attend. You can also email [email protected] for assistance. A star party is a gathering of amateur astronomers who set up their telescopes or other observing equipment so attendees can view the night sky. It is a great way to see things that you normally can't see without a telescope. During a typical start party you may view the planets, stars, galaxies and other heavenly bodies. Interested in viewing the stars on your own? You can borrow a telescope from Cary Library of Things. How would you like to wrap your gifts? If you’re looking for something unique or a more sustainable way to wrap, Furoshiki wrapping is a great option. Furoshiki (風呂敷) is a square piece of cloth that has traditionally been used for wrapping gifts in Japan. It’s not only for gift wrapping but is also commonly used for carrying items instead of bags. Since it’s fabric, there’s no need to tear or throw it away after receiving a Furoshiki-wrapped gift. So, how will you use it?  During this workshop, we’ll show you basic gift wrapping with Furoshiki, along with other practical methods you can use in your daily life. Share them with your recipients to keep things sustainable! If you'd like to follow along, please have on hand a 4x5 inch rectangular box and a Furoshiki bandana or lightweight bandana fabric (20x20 inch/50x50 cm).  This program will be recorded. This program will take place at Cary Hall, 1605 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA. This program is in partnership with and hosted by the Cary Lecture Series. In his research on the origins of social cognition, Psychology Professor, Dr. Felix Warneken, dispels the myth that children are born selfish and must be taught empathy. With his team at the University of Michigan, he investigates the origins of cooperation and morality. He will share fascinating—and irresistible– video and photographs from his laboratory experiments, showing that children as young as 18 months old engage in altruistic behaviors such as helping others to solve problems and share resources. With implications for parents and educators, he identifies many of the factors that influence cooperative tendencies throughout childhood. Dr. Warneken has received numerous awards and fellowships for his groundbreaking research, including from the National Science Foundation, the American Psychological Association, and the Radcliffe Center for Advanced Study. The Rutland Prison Camp and Dana Common are linked to the  creation of the Quabbin Reservoir in Central Massachusetts,  which now supplies much of the drinking water for Eastern  Massachusetts. Further east, Dogtown outside Gloucester, MA has its own  complicated history that ranges from colonial times to the  present day. In western New Hampshire, Madam Sherri Forest includes ruins  of a jazz age mansion and abundant natural beauty. Requiring a bit more effort to get to, these hidden gems offer a  glimpse into New England’s rich history, scenic beauty, and  stories that echo through time. Whether you’re drawn to  solitude, artistic inspiration, or simply curious exploration, these  lesser-known places hold their own magic. Registration is required. About our speaker: After retiring from a career in Financial Services, Bruce has pursued his interests in photography, art, and history. He has had photographs in multiple shows at the Griffin Museum in Winchester and various other venues including a solo show featuring his infrared photographs at the Acton Library. Bruce has studied at the New England School of Photography, the Griffin Museum, The DeCordova Museum, the Art Insitute of Boston, and Maine Media among other visual arts programs. He presents at various organizations on topics that feature his photography and explores subjects such as art, history and travel, including the history of his home region the Hudson Valley. Informal networking takes place from 9am to 9:30am and 11:30am to noon. If you are unemployed and actively looking, underemployed, seeking a new career direction, re-entering the job market after a long employment gap, or recently retired and looking for your "Encore Career," this networking group program is perfect for you! Remember, 85% of jobs are found through networking! Join us in a professional forum for networking with peers in a safe and comfortable environment conducive to developing new relationships and developing skills and strategies to help in your career transition. Each meeting features a new topic. Meetings include a presentation and interactive workshop on topics relevant to career transition, guest speakers, access to hiring managers, small group breakout rooms to network, and 1-on-1 coaching guidance. **OFFSITE LOCATION** This program will be held at the Community Center, 39 Marrett Rd, Lexington in Room 230/232.  Join us for a monthly workshop where we will explore watercolor basics. These workshops are intended for adults 60+. All materials for the class will be provided. The workshops will be taught by artist Lea Baecksteiner. Lea is an artist and illustrator with a Masters in Fine Arts and Illustration from the Neue Kunst Schule in Basel, Switzerland. Originally from Switzerland, she now lives and works in the greater Boston area. Her range of artistic media includes oil, gouache, watercolor, ink, and digital painting. In addition to her work as a fine artists, Lea provides illustrations for books, magazines, and printed materials. Her style has been described as playful, minimalist, and well-proportioned. Lea has exhibited across New York City, Basel, and Boston areas. View her work and list of exhibitions on her website! Registration is required. Spaces are limited.
