In celebration of Women’s History Month, Jane Carr and Lori Harrison-Kahan will discuss the life and career of Elizabeth Garver Jordan, the groundbreaking journalist, suffragist, author, and editor whose fearless reporting on women preceded the #MeToo movement and popularized the true-crime genre. As editors of The Case of Lizzie Borden and Other Writings, a Penguin Classics edition of Jordan’s journalism and fiction, Jane and Lori will share their journey to rescue this overlooked feminist figure from history and explore why Jordan’s work, much of which has been out of print for over a century, matters now. Jordan was one of few women journalists to cover the Lizzie Borden murder trial in New Bedford, Massachusetts, for the New York World in 1893. Jordan’s distinctive, narrative-driven coverage of the Borden and other high-profile murder cases brought her national visibility, and she turned increasingly to fiction writing. Drawing on her experiences as a true-crime reporter and newspaper editor, she published detective novels and short story collections such as Tales of the City Room that explored the fine line between women’s criminality and crimes against women. Employing popular genre conventions as a means of dealing with women’s issues, Jordan exposed gendered abuse in the workplace and the prevalence of sexual violence. In their presentation, Jane and Lori will draw a historical trajectory from Jordan’s pioneering literary activism to the writings of contemporary journalists and novelists whose work continues to fuel discussions of gender, feminism, and crime, raising questions about who gets to tell women’s stories, especially in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Lori Harrison-Kahan, a Lexington resident, is a professor in the English Department at Boston College and has received multiple awards for recovering forgotten literary works by women. In addition to co-editing The Case of Lizzie Borden and Other Writings with Jane Carr, she is the editor of The Superwoman and Other Writings by Miriam Michelson, co-editor of Heirs of Yesterday by Emma Wolf, co-editor of Matrilineal Dissent: Women Writers and Jewish American Literary History, and author of The White Negress: Literature, Minstrelsy, and the Black-Jewish Imaginary. Jane Carr is a writer, editor and scholar who teaches in the writing program at Manhattanville University. Most recently, she was senior editor for ideas and planning for CNN Opinion, where she directed social and cultural commentary and was a recipient of the 2024 New York Press Club Journalism Award for online commentary. Prior to joining CNN, she was an ACLS/Mellon Public Fellow at the think tank New America, lectured in the English Department at New York University and was the founding editor of The Brooklyn Quarterly, an online magazine of literature and public ideas. Ms. Solomon is an officer of the Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag. From their website, "The Massachusett Tribal Nation has existed for years beyond counting in pre-historic times, and a well- documented existence in historic and modern times. The Ponkapoag band of the Massachusett Tribe has existed as what was called a self- governing praying town (for Christian Converts) called Ponkapoag since 1657." The Massachusetts Library Collaborative's 50+ Job Seekers Group meets via Zoom on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, from 9:30am to 11:30am. Informal networking takes place from 9am to 9:30am and 11:30am to noon. If you are unemployed and actively looking, underemployed, seeking a new career direction, re-entering the job market after a long employment gap, or recently retired and looking for your "Encore Career," this networking group program is perfect for you! Remember, 85% of jobs are found through networking! Join us in a professional forum for networking with peers in a safe and comfortable environment conducive to developing new relationships and developing skills and strategies to help in your career transition. Each meeting features a new topic. Meetings include a presentation and interactive workshop on topics relevant to career transition, guest speakers, access to hiring managers, small group breakout rooms to network, and 1-on-1 coaching guidance. Participating on a regular basis will give job seekers the many tools and strategies needed for a successful job search. Each biweekly meeting is facilitated by Deborah Hope, MBA, PCIC, an experienced executive career coach. Deborah is a former Fortune 500 executive, investment banker and entrepreneur. She transitioned to executive coaching over 12 years ago. Deborah has coached with Harvard Business School Executive Education programs and the Massachusetts Conference for Women. She has been trained or certified in a variety of coaching models and assessment tools. Deborah has facilitated 50+ job seekers networking groups since 2016. Bird migration is one of the greatest wonders in the natural world. Many species undergo extraordinarily long and arduous journeys, and often the birds are only a few months old. Did you know that some birds migrate over 8,000 miles non-stop? Did you know that Northern Wheatears from Alaska migrate to and from East Africa – a round trip of over 18, 000 miles? Did youknow that the migration strategies of birds often depend on their age, sex, and subspecies? During his PowerPoint presentation, Bill Gette will discuss why birds migrate and explain how they achieve such amazing feats of endurance and navigation. Bill will review behavioral and physical adaptations, the use of environmental factors, the benefits of flocking behavior, and bird navigation. Registration is required. Bill Gette began leading area, domestic U.S., and international travel programs for Mass Audubon in 1986. Since then, he has traveled to all seven continents leading trips, studying nature, and photographing wildlife. He joined Mass Audubon full time in 1996 as the Founding Director of the Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport.  At Joppa Flats, Bill developed the Birder Certificate Program - a college level ornithology course; developed and taught the Certificate Program in Bird Ecology to train naturalist guides in Belize; coordinated the Center’s International Intern Program, and operated the Joppa Flats Bird Banding Station on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge for over 20 years. Bill retired from Mass Audubon in 2016, but remains very active teaching workshops. He is the Past-President of the Friends of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and current Board member. Bill enjoys sharing his photographs and travel experiences through his PowerPoint presentations.
