Ages 0-8 are welcome to join a ZOOM read aloud of a book that offers insight and reflection. Mirrors and Windows Storytime for Ages 0-8: Cultural Celebrations. Mirrors and Windows Storytime and Craft is a new collaboration between the Groton Public Library and the community group, A Better Community: Social Justice Families (ABC Families). Each week's book will feature authors and main characters from many racial backgrounds. Fridays, 10-10:30 am: Jan 22, 29; Feb 5, 12, 19. This program is based, in part, on a curriculum called Mirrors and Windows. The author of the curriculum, Lorena German, describes where the name comes from: An important educator named Rudine Sims Bishop coined the idea of books as windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors. She explains that books can be windows by offering us insight into another person's life and world, that books can be mirrors by reflecting our own lives in books and affirming our identities, and that books can be sliding glass doors as an opportunity to step into a completely new world. Seven Bridges Writers Cooperative is hosting a Writing Critique Group for All Genre Writers! The group will meet the 4th Wednesday of every month from 6 to 8 pm virtually. Any questions, please contact: 7bridgewriterscollaborative@gmail.com Seven Bridge Writers' Collaborative is a 501(c)3 non-profit creative writing organization that connects writers through educational programming, writers groups, and literary events to encourage, enrich, and support a literary community integral to the cultural life of central Massachusetts. For more information, please visit sevenbridge.org Critique, from the Greek kritike tekhne 'the critical art.' SBWC invites writers to contact us if they are interested in critique. SBWC both facilitates beginning groups and acts as a clearinghouse, connecting experienced writers looking for a new workshopping community. SBWC current has both day time and evening groups meeting in three different towns. The critique workshop is not about the writer's background, approach, or choice of subject matter, but about the work on the page. By closely examining the work of others in terms of craft (character, point of view, setting, action, dialogue, etc.) we are better equipped to revisit our own work - to see its successes and failures, and to improve as readers, editors, and writers. Allowing our work to be read by others involves risk, and, for some, considerable trepidation. Our goal is always to support the writer in the revision process. Comments are respectful, based on a thorough reading of the submission, and are supported with specific examples from the manuscript. Instead of speaking in negatives or positives, our comments strive to be helpful. Critique workshops are a collaborative effort, but remember, you are the final editor of your work. Ultimately, you, the writer, make the final decisions about whether or how feedback applies to the vision you have for your story. Mercifully, the vaccines are rolling out, and not a moment too soon. And they will be effective. But there is more than one kind of vaccine, and not all may be available at the same time. How big are the differences between them? What will happen to people who have already been infected--should they be vaccinated too? Just how much can we predict with confidence about what will take place in the months--or years--to come? Answering all of these questions involves incorporating some amount of uncertainty, a variable that is often seriously underappreciated by patient and doctor alike. In this session, we'll talk less about the COVID virus itself than the inherent uncertainties found in the research that has led to our policies--whether they involve masks, vaccines, or any other public health pronouncement. Understanding the spectrum of certainty can ease the anxieties coursing through the country right now, and help establish a healthier conversation between patients and their doctors. Steven Hatch, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology at UMass Medical Center in Worcester, MA. A dropout English PhD student, he thought med school seemed easier and he has never regretted that decision. Early in his career, he became interested in global health, which has led to his working in multiple parts of the globe, including stints in Haiti, Venezuela, Columbia, Mozambique, Liberia, and Micronesia. He has written three books, including Snowball in a Blizzard: a Physician's Notes on Uncertainty in Medicine (which is the theme for this talk) as well as Inferno: a Doctor's Ebola Story about his work in the West African Ebola outbreak in 2014. He lives in Newton, MA with his remarkably patient wife, although he will be picking up stakes and moving to Cambodia soon, because after a year he's had enough of COVID.

This series of 7 classes offers an introduction to the high level programming language Java. Java is defined as 'a general-purpose programming language that is class-based, object-oriented, and designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible.” You will learn about Java syntax, and how to write code in Java. You will learn how to make your own applications that can run on your browser. These classes will be interactive, and students are encouraged to ask questions. We welcome both new and returning students to the class. This class will be taught by high school senior Iman Kiio who has taught coding at Code Wiz in Westford. Iman has participated in many STEM events and has helped to organize a Civic Hackathon in her community. For students aged 12-16.
