The North Shore Arts Association invites the public back for 2024 season with our first juried show of the year, Exhibition One. On display from April 30 to May 24, Exhibition One boasts the talent of our juried artists with a wide variety of masterful artworks. The opening reception will be held on Friday, May 3 from 5 - 7PM. Light hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided. All are welcome!  We are open TUESDAY - SATURDAY, from 10AM - 5PM, and SUNDAY, 12PM - 4PM. NSAA is closed on Mondays in May.

The North Shore Arts Association welcomes the public back for our 2024 season with our first Associate Member exhibition of the year, the Associate Spring Show. On display from April 30 to May 22, the Associate Spring Show boasts a wide variety of masterful artworks, from local talent and seasoned professionals alike. The opening reception will be held on Friday, May 3 from 5 - 7PM. Light hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided. SeniorCare is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Meals on Wheels Breakfast Fundraiser (formerly the Valentine’s Breakfast), which has grown to become a well-attended, community-centered event.  The breakfast benefits SeniorCare’s Meals on Wheels home-delivered lunch program and provides much needed funding. This year's breakfast will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024, 7:00am - 9:30am, at the Gloucester House Restaurant. SeniorCare currently delivers Meals on Wheels to more than 600 older adults each day.  Annually, this means 169,000 home-delivered meals and 19,000 meals served at dining sites in Beverly, Gloucester, Essex, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Rockport, Ipswich, Hamilton, Topsfield, and Wenham. The Captain Elias Davis House, located in Gloucester’s downtown neighborhood, was constructed between 1799 and 1804 and has been the headquarters of the Cape Ann Museum since 1923. Elias Davis and Lucy Haskell Davis, the original occupants of the Davis House, were representative of Gloucester families who moved to the Harbor Village in the years following the American Revolution and became heavily engaged in maritime pursuits, most importantly foreign shipping and the fishing industry. In keeping with life in the early 19th century, the first floor of the Captain Elias Davis House is furnished and decorated with domestic and personal items. The Davis House exhibits a mix of late Georgian and Federal detailing inside and out; recently interior spaces have been enhanced with period appropriate wall coverings and carpeting.   Many of the objects in the house actually belonged to Elias Davis and his descendants, and include:  A drawing of the Davis family crest from County Hereford, England.  A portrait of the captain painted c.1790 by an unknown Antwerp artist.  The outfitted medicine chest and instruction book used by Captain Davis in his role as ship’s doctor.  Passports for two Davis family vessels, the ship Cadmus and the brig Augusta, signed by James Madison and John Adams respectively.   A sampler stitched by Captain Davis’s daughter Mary, naming all 13 of the captain’s children.  A pencil drawing of the house itself, done from memory by son Soloman Haskell Davis in 1830 while he was away at sea.  This tour will share the history of the house, its occupants, and its unique interior features and historic objects.

The Manship Artists Residency property, a rare survival from a former time, was once at the center of an important art community that hosted some of America’s greatest sculptors and other artists. MARS is continuing the legacy of the Manship family of artists: Paul, John, and Margaret; and the artists who have historically come to Cape Ann to seek community and inspiration while living and working here.  Join Rebecca Reynolds, executive director of the Manship Artists Residency, for an intimate tour of the private home and grounds of sculptor Paul Manship. Sculptor Morgan Dummitt will be in residence prior to his evening talk at the Cape Ann Museum. Dummit is the 2024 Walker Hancock Sculptor-in-Residence at Manship Artists Residency, a joint program with the National Sculpture Society.  This program is presented in conjunction with the Museum’s current special exhibition, In the Round: 20th Century Cape Ann Sculpture.

Gloucester, Massachusetts – Manship Artists Residency is pleased to announce THE NET WORKS: a multi-sensory installation built upon the narrative of Gloucester’s fishing community. The installation is located in the heart of Gloucester’s working waterfront in a building that was a former seafood processing plant. The fishing net serves as a literal and metaphorical symbol in an immersive exhibit that includes scents, sounds, and tactile experiences, where visitors, like fish, move through a passage of netting. The Net Works honors Gloucester’s iconic working waterfront and its generations of fisherman with the net symbolizing the interconnectedness of man and sea and the community itself.

  How is a bronze sculpture created? While the sculptors of Cape Ann are often imagined as solitary artists, the casting of bronze and carving of marble required collaboration with highly skilled technicians. Sculptor and craftsman Morgan Dummitt will discuss the ins and outs of sculptural production in the 20th century, from initial sketch to completed monument. Focusing on Walker Hancock’s extraordinary Pennsylvania Railroad War Memorial, this talk will deepen our understanding and appreciation for the symphony of art, craft, and labor displayed in the Cape Ann collection.  Morgan Dummitt began studying the figure at the Art Students League of New York. He earned a Certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and has also studied at the Florence Academy of Art and the Pelletieri Stone Carving Academy. He served an apprenticeship with renowned marble carver Fred X Brownstein. He has been an active member of the Philadelphia Traction Company since 2013 and is an Elected Member of the National Sculpture Society. In 2016, he was awarded a residency at the St. Gaudens Historic Site in Cornish, NH, and in 2024 he served as the first Walker Hancock Sculptor-in-Residence at Manship Artists Residency, a joint program with the National Sculpture Society. Morgan teaches sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia. He has exhibited throughout the country, and completed numerous public and private commissions.

In 2023, sold out shows in Los Angeles, New York City, Hoboken NJ, N.Carolina, Philadelphia, and San Franscisco by ‘Lenny Kaye & Friends’ celebrated the 50th anniversary of Nuggets, the beloved and influential double-compilation album curated by Kaye, Patti Smith’s guitar-player. OK, it was originally released in 1972 - but who’s counting?! At the time he was a writer for Rolling Stone and a clerk at Village Oldies Records in Greenwich Village. For 2024, right after two more shows in London, Lenny is bringing the show to The Cut in Gloucester, with a group of his favorite N. E. region “Friends”. Nuggets, subtitled “Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968” chronicled that short period between the Beatles’ debut on The Ed Sullivan Show and when, in the wake of Sgt. Pepper, rock and roll turned progressive. The compilation excavated that hidden history. It has been called the punk rock version of Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music. The early punk-rock bands saw the Nuggets bands as kindred spirits, many of those first bands that played CBGB (including Kaye with Patti Smith Group) covered songs from the album. “It’s all about great records…it’s all about great songs,” said Kaye. Jon Savage, in his history of the UK punk rock scene, England's Dreaming, cites Nuggets as a major influence on punk bands - including it in his essential punk discography, alongside Iggy and the Stooges' Raw Power and The Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat.  In 1998 Rhino Records put the original disc in a box set with three other discs, an extra 91 songs that were not on the original double-LP, featuring such smash hits as Incense and Peppermints by Strawberry Alarm Clock, Louie, Louie by the Kingsmen, and Wooly Bully by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. In 2003, the album was ranked number 196 on Rolling Stone's list of the '500 Greatest Albums Of All Time’.

The first Gloucester screening of Shep Abbott’s film, ‘GLOUCESTER SPEAKS’ Fishermen, Scientists, Public Officials, Scholars, Authors, Artists, Merchants, Local Citizens: in Gloucester documentarian Shep Abbott’s new film ‘Gloucester Speaks’ – nearly a decade in the making – all of these people convey their deeply-held thoughts and feelings about their storied City's illustrious past, present, and projected future. Beginning in 1606 with explorer Samuel de Champlain's naming and mapping of what was to become America's first commercial fishing port – "Le Beauport" (The Beautiful Harbor) – the film is narrated by Gloucester residents.  Their historic port experienced many blessings over the ensuing 400 years, such as the establishment of the greatest cod fishery in the world.  It would also endure profound sorrows, including the disappearance of the indigenous Pawtucket People and the eventual loss of 10,000+ fishermen to the sea. These hardy New England residents share their concerns about the present day, exploring today's crises of the loss of that great fishery, floods brought by advancing, warming oceans, 100-year storms, and the continuing loss of remaining fish populations heading north to find colder waters.  Their stories, hopes and dreams are told with warmth, dignity, and humor, manifesting a deep love and concern for this historic and beautiful fishing port.

  The Captain Elias Davis House, located in Gloucester’s downtown neighborhood, was constructed between 1799 and 1804 and has been the headquarters of the Cape Ann Museum since 1923. Elias Davis and Lucy Haskell Davis, the original occupants of the Davis House, were representative of Gloucester families who moved to the Harbor Village in the years following the American Revolution and became heavily engaged in maritime pursuits, most importantly foreign shipping and the fishing industry. In keeping with life in the early 19th century, the first floor of the Captain Elias Davis House is furnished and decorated with domestic and personal items. The Davis House exhibits a mix of late Georgian and Federal detailing inside and out; recently interior spaces have been enhanced with period appropriate wall coverings and carpeting.   Many of the objects in the house actually belonged to Elias Davis and his descendants, and include:  A drawing of the Davis family crest from County Hereford, England.  A portrait of the captain painted c.1790 by an unknown Antwerp artist.  The outfitted medicine chest and instruction book used by Captain Davis in his role as ship’s doctor.  Passports for two Davis family vessels, the ship Cadmus and the brig Augusta, signed by James Madison and John Adams respectively.   A sampler stitched by Captain Davis’s daughter Mary, naming all 13 of the captain’s children.  A pencil drawing of the house itself, done from memory by son Soloman Haskell Davis in 1830 while he was away at sea.  This tour will share the history of the house, its occupants, and its unique interior features and historic objects.

Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation to host screening of Nubar Alexanian’s film, ‘FINDING ARMENIA’ The program will include remarks with an audience Q&A with the filmmaker.  After the screening, a reception with the artist will be held in the Church’s historical room for those who may want to support the completion of the film project as donors. An intimate portrayal of one man’s search for his Armenian identity, Nubar Alexanian’s ‘Finding Armenia’ not only provides a vital history lesson for those unfamiliar with the Armenian Genocide, but also challenges its viewers to grapple with the profound questions that influence all of our identities. What does the healing of intergenerational trauma look like? What does it mean to regain control of our ancestral narratives? How can these narratives be reconciled with a hostile world? The fishing net serves as a literal and metaphorical symbol in an immersive exhibit that includes scents, sounds, and tactile experiences, where visitors, like fish, move through a passage of netting. The Net Works honors Gloucester’s iconic working waterfront and its generations of fisherman with the net symbolizing the interconnectedness of man and sea and the community itself.

Windhover Center for the Performing Arts in Rockport is excited to announce their 2024 inaugural event “Mysteries and Legends” with Brendan Evans (Guitarist) and Michael O'Leary (Singer and Historian). The performance will be followed by a party to raise a toast for the newly incorporated Cape Ann Guitar Society. The program consists of guitar music and vocals conjuring strange and haunting tales from Turkey, Spain, and Gloucester. Brendan Evans and Michael O’Leary are a dynamic duo and bring together worldwide and local knowledge of music and history. As a Classical guitarist, Brendan Evans has performed, taught, and won awards throughout North America and in 13 countries globally. Currently residing in Rockport, Brendan performs and teaches locally and internationally, is the founder of the Cape Ann Guitar Society, and enjoys playing in various groups, including the original project Nightowls. A Gloucester resident of 34 years, Michael O’Leary is a singer/collector of Celtic and Maritime songs. He has performed extensively on Cape Ann, and strives to share the historical/cultural background of songs. On Cape Ann, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked, at the center of Gloucester, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out.  This tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement, to meet some of the people, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name, why people left, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967), and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown.  This walking tour is three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy, but uneven, with rocks and roots underfoot. Hiking attire and footwear advised; also, walking poles if you use them. Bring water and insect repellent. The tour will start at the main entrance to Dogtown, off Cherry Street. Meet at the parking lot a short distance up Dogtown Road, on the right. There is parking for a few cars in the lot; otherwise, park along the right side of the road, after the parking lot, or along Cherry St. Please arrive 10 minutes early. The tour will depart on time.

This event is presented by the Gloucester Historical Commission recognizing outstanding cultural heritage preservation, restoration, and education projects. The Gloucester Historical Preservation Awards are designed to inspire others while recognizing contributions to Gloucester history and culture. After a four-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Gloucester Historical Commission’s Preservation Awards are back. The mission of the commission “is to preserve and protect Gloucester’s historical assets and develop public awareness and appreciation of Gloucester’s historic resources.” The GHC will present awards to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to preserving and restoring the History of Gloucester. Members of the Gloucester Historical Commission are Lillian Olmsted, Susan Morreale, Ralph Pisaturo, Timothy Quinn, David Rhinelander and Robert Whitmarsh.

Required $25-$32    Session Americana and Eleanor Buckland return to the US following a five week tour of Ireland and Europe leaving audiences in 10 countries inspired and breathless from the band’s catalog of down to earth songwriting, instrument swapping and joyous energy. You will not want to miss this show! Late one Sunday night in October 2003, Session Americana had its first jam around a table in the back of Toad in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Looking back, the group has had a natural, almost inevitable evolution from a loose bunch of friends sitting around swapping songs in a bar, to a hot-ticket weekly residency, to a touring collective. Along the way, the band has made nine records (so far), played clubs and festivals across the U.S. and Europe, and developed deep collaborative bonds with a wide community of musicians. Session Americana's diligent avoidance of music business “shoulds” has led the band down a quirky and joyful path through the music world. The result is evident in the musical prowess the players and singers bring to every show. Swapping instruments, trading off lead vocals and sharing songwriting credits, Session Americana is constantly exploring new collaborations and touring like a band out of time, always searching for a welcoming and homey venue, a long lunch with old friends, and a good glass of wine.

Enjoy a guided gallery tour of the Cape Ann Museum’s current special exhibition, In the Round: 20th Century Cape Ann Sculpture. Drawing on its own collection and from private collections in the region, the exhibition focuses on sculptors of Cape Ann.   Featured will be the work of artists who gravitated around Charles Grafly, one of this country’s premiere sculptors of the early 20th century, including Walker Hancock, George Demetrios and Katharine Lane Weems. Sculptors who in turn followed in their footsteps will also be highlighted, including Lawrence Fane, Aristides Demetrios and James McCellan. As a special feature, the exhibition will include Morgan Faulds Pike’s half-size model for The Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Memorial, a monumental bronze sculpture installed on Gloucester’s Stacy Boulevard, in 2001.

Witches and Wards: Magic and Counter Magic in 17th Century England and New England Presented by: Krystina Yeager, Education Manager at Historic Beverly and Historian’s Guide to the Salem Witch Trials Beliefs and fears surrounding witches and the Devil were rampant in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Laws against witchcraft were in place as early as 1542 in England. The resulting witch trials were published in witchcraft pamphlets written for the public to consume. While the church advised the people to trust in the power of God, many people took defense against witches into their own hands. Specific items concealed in walls or specific markings carved into fireplaces were believed to keep the Devil and his agents away. When the British came to colonize America, these practices came with them and can be found in many local historic homes even today.    This series includes: Monday, May 6: 140 Years of Television Technology. Re-imagining the North Shore Technology Workforce, Part III: Release of  the Northeast Massachusetts Innovation Economy Workforce Report Please join us for the release of a new study by the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute, funded by Massachusetts Technology Collaborative and Essex County Community Foundation for North Shore Technology Council, examining the trends and workforce needs of the technology sector. This is the third in our ongoing advocacy event series to engage industry, government, academia, and non-profit organizations in building our region's technology workforce, in order to strengthen the region North of Boston as a leader in technology, life sciences, sustainable energy, manufacturing, and other critical technology industries. Researchers from the Donahue Institute will reveal the findings of a new 2024 workforce study. Following the presentation, a panel of experts from industry, government, and academia will discuss their perspective. Findings will include: Regional demographic, economic, and technology trends The state of innovation in Northeast Massachusetts Strengths and weaknesses of the region’s business and workforce Recommendations to meet employer needs with a qualified workers The role of industry, academia, and government in forging a path forward

The Captain Elias Davis House, located in Gloucester’s downtown neighborhood, was constructed between 1799 and 1804 and has been the headquarters of the Cape Ann Museum since 1923. Elias Davis and Lucy Haskell Davis, the original occupants of the Davis House, were representative of Gloucester families who moved to the Harbor Village in the years following the American Revolution and became heavily engaged in maritime pursuits, most importantly foreign shipping and the fishing industry. In keeping with life in the early 19th century, the first floor of the Captain Elias Davis House is furnished and decorated with domestic and personal items. The Davis House exhibits a mix of late Georgian and Federal detailing inside and out; recently interior spaces have been enhanced with period appropriate wall coverings and carpeting.   Many of the objects in the house actually belonged to Elias Davis and his descendants, and include:  A drawing of the Davis family crest from County Hereford, England.  A portrait of the captain painted c.1790 by an unknown Antwerp artist.  The outfitted medicine chest and instruction book used by Captain Davis in his role as ship’s doctor.  Passports for two Davis family vessels, the ship Cadmus and the brig Augusta, signed by James Madison and John Adams respectively.   A sampler stitched by Captain Davis’s daughter Mary, naming all 13 of the captain’s children.  A pencil drawing of the house itself, done from memory by son Soloman Haskell Davis in 1830 while he was away at sea.  This tour will share the history of the house, its occupants, and its unique interior features and historic objects.

The installation is located in the heart of Gloucester’s working waterfront in a building that was a former seafood processing plant. The fishing net serves as a literal and metaphorical symbol in an immersive exhibit that includes scents, sounds, and tactile experiences, where visitors, like fish, move through a passage of netting. The Net Works honors Gloucester’s iconic working waterfront and its generations of fisherman with the net symbolizing the interconnectedness of man and sea and the community itself.

Join the Cape Ann Museum for a guided walking tour of Public Sculpture in downtown Gloucester. The tour will start in the CAM Courtyard with Spirit of the Sea by Albert Henry Atkins and uneasy Crown, Uneasy Pieces, Uneasy Chair by Ken Hruby, among other pieces. Visitors can then follow the sculptures through downtown Gloucester to Stacey Boulevard.   These tours are presented in conjunction with the Museum’s current special exhibition, In the Round: 20th Century Cape Ann Sculpture.  Please note: This tour requires 3 miles of walking and will take up to 2.5 hours. The nucleus, [now based in the Western Mass.] of the group is a small ragtag contingent of fascinants completely focused on the idea of spontaneous composition within the framework of religious experience: the rock n roll EVENT. Taking it to the stars to see where exactly the light comes from then surfing that beam straight to the O-mind where the kick drum becomes its own sentient nature's heartbeat.
