Play as Practice Explores the Creative Space Between Experimentation and Finished Work Exhibition: Play as Practice Dates: May 21 – June 21, 2026 Opening Reception: Thursday, May 21, 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM Location: Cove Gallery, 37 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester, MA Gloucester, MA — Play as Practice is a five-artist exhibition curated by Mallie Loring Pratt and Hanna Taylor Marino that examines the dynamic relationship between formal studio practice and the experimental work that unfolds alongside it. Featuring work by Pratt, Marino, Isabel Bacon, Margaret Sweet, and Julia Von Metzsch, the exhibition offers an intimate look into the creative process and the “side journeys” that quietly shape each artist’s visual language. Bringing together painting, sketches, collage, and exploratory works, Play as Practice invites viewers to consider what constitutes an artist’s “real” work. By placing finished pieces in conversation with studies and experiments, the exhibition reveals the moments of play, uncertainty, and discovery that often lead to artistic breakthrough. Each of the five artists moves fluidly between abstraction and representation, sharing a common interest in where those boundaries blur. Though distinct in style and approach, the artists are united by a willingness to embrace process, curiosity, and experimentation as essential parts of their practices. Collectively, the artists bring significant professional recognition to the exhibition, including museum exhibitions, gallery representation throughout New England, critical coverage, brand collaborations, and work held in private and corporate collections nationwide. Rather than presenting only polished outcomes, Play as Practice offers audiences a behind-the-scenes perspective on contemporary painting practices and the evolving decisions that shape them. Play as Practice will be on view at Cove Gallery in Gloucester from May 21 through June 21, 2026. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 21 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Join noted raconteur Phil Storey for this "fun filled" Phil Facts about Gloucester's deep literary past! Phil Storey is a local local historian, noted raconteur, and master storyteller. He developed this engaging literary walking tour during Gloucester’s 400+ celebration and is excited to continue hosting it in partnership with the Gloucester Writers Center. Gloucester has long been home to remarkable writers and literary voices. From early pioneers like Judith Sargent Murray and her groundbreaking feminist writings, to Nobel Prize-winning poet T.S. Eliot, who spent many summers of his boyhood in Gloucester, the city’s connection to literature runs deep. Gloucester’s landscape, harbor, and sea life have inspired generations of writers and poets. The tour also explores the rich poetic dialogue between Charles Olson and Vincent Ferrini in the twentieth century, as well as the many visiting authors who came to Gloucester seeking inspiration. These include Rudyard Kipling, author of Captains Courageous; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, whose poem The Wreck of the Hesperus was inspired by the region; and horror master H.P. Lovecraft, whose The Shadow Over Innsmouth echoes the atmosphere of Cape Ann’s fishing towns. Join us for a funny, entertaining, and informative walk through Gloucester’s literary past. Stirring original composition -- Chorus North Shore, Presto Festival Orchestra Chorus North Shore will present a powerful choral work to mark the new millennium. This stirring, immersive piece, written by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, debuted in Royal Albert Hall in London, April 2000, with National Chorus and Orchestra accompaniment. This composition uses religious themes, in addition to 15th-century music, to counterpoint the extreme loss and guilt that result from war. Part prayer, part warning, ultimately delivering a message for those searching for peace. A video will be shown accompanying the performance (imagery that some viewers may find unsettling).

As tensions rise and consequences escalate, we learn that these women have more that connects them than what meets the eye. Bad Books explores the first impressions and raucous debates that divide us while forcing audiences to consider what it really means to care for our children.  Sharyn Rothstein’s poignant drama opens the 2026 Season with cunning humor and heartfelt dialogue in this regional-premiere directed by M. Bevin O’Garaº. Running from June 4 to 27, all performances are at the Natti-Willsky Performance Center – 267 East Main Street, Gloucester. Join GMGI in partnership with Ocean Alliance to understand more about the secrets whale blow can tell us about the ocean. Whales are considered sentinel species — their health offers an early warning about the condition of ocean ecosystems. Yet today, one in four cetacean species is vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered. Join Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) to learn about its eight-year collaboration with Ocean Alliance (OA), a Gloucester-based nonprofit pioneering drone technology for marine mammal science. Together, GMGI and OA are using whale exhalant, or blow, collected with SnotBot®, an aptly-named drone used for noninvasive sample collection, to study whale respiratory microbiomes across multiple species and oceans. This research is building the foundation needed to track changes in the health status of whales and their ocean ecosystem over time.

Step back into America’s golden era when author Jana Milbocker will talk about her newest book, Gardens of the Gilded Age at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate. In this richly illustrated talk, Jana will explore the estates and landscapes created for families such as the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers – and the Cranes – alongside the visionary architects and designers who brought their grandeur to life. Castle Hill is one of thirty gardens profiled in the book. The lecture will take place in the Great House and doors will open at 5:30 pm. From stick figure doodlers to first-rate talents, join us for a seaside, Plein Air sketch class with Sue Wheeler of Arts Abound in Magnolia. All skill levels are welcome! The three-class series offers a 30-minute beginner sketch lesson with an hour and a half of independent sketching time. All you need to bring is a sketchbook, pencils, a ruler, and an eraser. Please note: watercolors, pastels, oils, or acrylics are not permitted on the Museum grounds. Attendees who wish to tour the Hammond Castle Museum after any of the classes class are entitled to a 20% discount on a self-guided tour. Tour tickets may be purchased in the Museum Shop before 2:30 pm on the day of this class. Fridays Summer Sketch Series En Plein Air classes: 9:30 am- 11:30 am. Museum Member savings apply.   About Sue Wheeler: Sue has a lifetime of making art through various mediums from delectable pastries to abstracts in pastels, watercolor, and acrylics. She enjoys using her creative flair in quilting and interior design as well.   Sue graduated from the University of Denver with a Bachelor’s in business with a focus on hospitality management and earned an associate’s degree from the Culinary Institute of America. Following her tenure as a pastry chef in New Hampshire, Sue returned to school for a certificate in graphic design and put her talents to use as a designer in the book publishing and art publishing industries in Vermont. In early 2019, Sue opened her own gallery and studio, Arts Abound in Magnolia Village, MA, as an artistic haven for local artists. Through the gallery, over 30 artists featured their creative works, ranging from paintings, hand-painted silk scarves, silver jewelry, and more. Sue also ran many workshops and classes featuring many of the artists. Often, Sue would work late into the night, painting in her Arts Abound studio. After closing the gallery in 2022, Sue continued to offer the often sold-out painting classes, taught by some of the Arts Abound artists.   Sue has studied under numerous artists to learn watercolor, acrylic painting, cold wax & oil, and collage. Her goals for the Hammond Castle Museum sketch classes are to engage those who are new to the world of art and reinvigorate those who haven’t picked up a blank canvas or sketch pad in a long time. Sue’s philosophy on the creative process encourages you to be less concerned about the final product and instead to enjoy the journey of creativity and get lost in the moment. "The Battle of Gloucester, though frequently eclipsed by more significant engagements, had profound and lasting implications. It exposed the weaknesses in British naval operations near the coast, bolstered local determination, and set in motion the development of a naval force poised to eventually contest British dominance at sea."  Getting there Travel   Although Cape Ann is off the beaten path, it is easy to get to through myriad means of transportation. By Car From I-95, take the Yankee Division Highway straight into the heart of Gloucester Commuter Rail The Newburyport/Rockport line offers easy access to downtown Gloucester—and is only 1.3 miles from Stage Fort Park. From North Station, board a Rockport-bound train. From the North Shore, board a Boston-bound train and get off at Salem to transfer to a Rockport train. This two-hour session includes a 30-minute beginner sketch lesson. All you need to bring is a sketchbook, pencils, a ruler, and an eraser. Please note: watercolors, pastels, oils, or acrylics are not permitted on the Museum grounds. Attendees who wish to tour the Hammond Castle Museum after this class are entitled to a 20% discount on a self-guided tour. About Sue Wheeler: Sue has a lifetime of making art through various mediums from delectable pastries to abstracts in pastels, watercolor, and acrylics. She enjoys using her creative flair in quilting and interior design as well. Sue graduated from the University of Denver with a Bachelor’s in business with a focus on hospitality management and earned an associate’s degree from the Culinary Institute of America. Following her tenure as a pastry chef in New Hampshire, Sue returned to school for a certificate in graphic design and put her talents to use as a designer in the book publishing and art publishing industries in Vermont. In early 2019, Sue opened her own gallery and studio, Arts Abound in Magnolia Village, MA, as an artistic haven for local artists. Through the gallery, over 30 artists featured their creative works, ranging from paintings, hand-painted silk scarves, silver jewelry, and more. Sue also ran many workshops and classes featuring many of the artists. Often, Sue would work late into the night, painting in her Arts Abound studio. After closing the gallery in 2022, Sue continued to offer the often sold-out painting classes, taught by some of the Arts Abound artists. Sue has studied under numerous artists to learn watercolor, acrylic painting, cold wax & oil, and collage. Her goals for the Hammond Castle Museum sketch classes are to engage those who are new to the world of art and reinvigorate those who haven’t picked up a blank canvas or sketch pad in a long time. Sue’s philosophy on the creative process encourages you to be less concerned about the final product and instead to enjoy the journey of creativity and get lost in the moment. Join noted raconteur Phil Storey for this "fun filled" Phil Facts about Gloucester's deep literary past! Phil Storey is a local local historian, noted raconteur, and master storyteller. He developed this engaging literary walking tour during Gloucester’s 400+ celebration and is excited to continue hosting it in partnership with the Gloucester Writers Center. Gloucester has long been home to remarkable writers and literary voices. From early pioneers like Judith Sargent Murray and her groundbreaking feminist writings, to Nobel Prize-winning poet T.S. Eliot, who spent many summers of his boyhood in Gloucester, the city’s connection to literature runs deep. Gloucester’s landscape, harbor, and sea life have inspired generations of writers and poets. The tour also explores the rich poetic dialogue between Charles Olson and Vincent Ferrini in the twentieth century, as well as the many visiting authors who came to Gloucester seeking inspiration. These include Rudyard Kipling, author of Captains Courageous; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, whose poem The Wreck of the Hesperus was inspired by the region; and horror master H.P. Lovecraft, whose The Shadow Over Innsmouth echoes the atmosphere of Cape Ann’s fishing towns. Join us for a funny, entertaining, and informative walk through Gloucester’s literary past. Brendan Evans presents a program of guitar music centered around works by Augustin Barrios and Manuel Ponce - a set of waltzes full of virtuosic and melodious springtime energy, followed by an extended meditation on the medieval musical schema La Folia. Join Cape Ann Guitar Society in the beautiful St. Anthony's by the Sea for an evening recital by founder Brendan Evans. Classical guitarist Brendan Evans has performed, taught, and won awards throughout North America and around the world. His debut album, Tiento, was released in January of 2026 on Green Flash Records. A Rockport, Massachusetts native, Brendan performs and teaches locally and internationally, is the founder of Cape Ann Guitar Society, and enjoys playing in various groups, including the original project Nightowls. Brendan holds a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in classical guitar performance from the Oberlin and San Francisco Conservatories. While pursuing his undergraduate degree Brendan spent a year studying flamenco guitar in the cities of Granada and Cordoba, Spain. Cape Ann Guitar Society is dedicated to building and nurturing a community of listening and learning through guitar related concerts, workshops, and meetups. As a maritime center, Cape Ann’s culture is inherently diverse, and we seek out, represent, and learn from that diversity through the guitar. The Guitar Society amplifies local voices and brings visiting artists and teachers to Cape Ann, connecting our local communities with the global guitar family - music as cultural diplomacy. We seek to expand the repertoire through commissioning projects and collaborate with other local arts and historical organizations. Gloucester Gratis Days - Every Tuesday Residents Enter for Free! Step inside the breathtaking home of one of the most prolific inventors of the 20th century, John Hays Hammond, Jr. In keeping with our founder’s original vision for his seaside castle-home to serve as a museum offering the Gloucester community access to ancient works of architectural art, Hammond Castle Museum is pleased to offer free self-guided tours to Gloucester residents every Tuesday throughout the regular tour season, which runs through early November, and during the holiday season, Museum-wide temporary exhibit, Deck the Halls. Proof of residency for all Gloucester Gratis Days reservations is required upon check-in at the Museum. Advance registration is recommended but not required. You may also register upon arrival in the Museum Shop. Flexible Arrival Times for Self-Guided Tours: Experience Hammond Castle Museum at your own pace with our flexible arrival times for self-guided tours. Your reservation grants you entry anytime within your session time, ensuring you can arrive stress-free and enjoy your visit to the fullest. We recommend planning for at least 60 minutes to explore the grounds and interior galleries of the Museum.

Slip into the pool or unwind in the hot tub as the sun sets and the evening settles in. This is your midweek moment, six stories above it all. Rooftop Evening Pass begins at 6:00PM. Saving Grace Dance Ensemble: ARTFULNESS Windhover Performing Arts Center welcomes the New Hampshire-based Saving Grace Dance Ensemble, led by Artistic Director Robyn Movsessian, to its outdoor stage this June. This multi-genre, intergenerational evening of dance will also feature Ballet Lighthouse (NH), Bayside Tap Company (RI), Douglas Davis Ballet (NH), Nadine Delano/Poet (MA), Dirigio Conservatory (ME), solo artist Michael Dascomb (NH), Freedom in Motion (NH), Miss Kelsey’s Dance Studio (NH), Maine Dance Company (ME), NSquared Dance Company (NH/NYC), Russian Ballet Academy (NH), Safe Haven Ballet (NH), Speaking in Taps (Greater New England), and others. Saving Grace Dance Ensemble will present several new works along with repertory from last season. Festival, a fun contemporary ballet with choreography set to Michael Torke’s “Unseen” opens the program with carnival props and celebratory movement. A new modern/contemporary work by Movsessian entitled Sacred Wildness celebrates empowerment and spiritual courage. Performances are rain or shine.
