Avery, Gottlieb & Rothko: By the Sea explores the artistic bond between three pivotal 20th century American artists—Milton Avery (1885–1965), Adolph Gottlieb (1903–1974), and Mark Rothko (1903-1970)—whose shared summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, from the 1920s to the mid-1940s had a lasting impact on their work. The exhibit is being presented through a collaboration between the Cape Ann Museum and The Phillips Collection (Washington, D.C.). On view at the Cape Ann Museum from June 30 through September 27, 2026, the exhibition will then be displayed at The Phillips Collection from October 24, 2026, through January 24, 2027.  As the first Cape Ann Museum generated show to then be taken on by another institution, the Museum is working in close collaboration with all three artists’ estates. The show will feature over 82 works from the 1920s to the 1960s, with loans from 26 prominent national and private institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., which is a central partner lending 10 works by Mark Rothko to the exhibition. Many works in this exhibition have never been on public view.   This unprecedented exhibit, accompanied by a 224-page catalog produced by Rizzoli Electa, will reveal the deep connections between these artists, emphasizing their roles as both mentors and peers, while showcasing the unique working methods and lifelong friendships that shaped their groundbreaking art. The catalog, in addition to including essays by Eliza Rathbone, will also feature contributions by prominent art scholars and curators.  Organized for the Cape Ann Museum by guest curator, Eliza Rathbone, Chief Curator Emerita of The Phillips Collection in collaboration with The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.

Join Us Mid-Day for Artful Conversations  Take a midday pause and experience one work of art in depth.  Artful Conversations are informal, docent-led gallery experiences that invite visitors to slow down, look closely, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries.  The program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation, curiosity, and conversation, participants are encouraged to share ideas, consider different perspectives, and discover new connections together.  This week for Artful Conversations  In 2025, CAM acquired two 2023 photographs by Matika Wilbur as part of the Museum’s Native Initiatives, a project that culminated in a landmark exhibition of Wilbur’s work at the CAM Green. Wilbur’s work reshapes how Indigenous Peoples are represented across the United States, centering contemporary Native identity and celebrating the vibrancy of Indigenous culture today.  Please join CAM docent Maggie Rosa for an engaging conversation as she reflects on what these photographs reveal—about the photographer, about the individuals portrayed, and about the evolving stories they invite us to understand more deeply.  Born and raised in England, Maggie Rosa moved to the Chicago in 1968 to work as a research technician at the University of Chicago. During her eight years in Chicago, she married Joe and obtained her PhD. The two of them did post-doctoral research at Yale and then moved to Cambridge to join the nascent biotech world. They eventually built a weekend home in Gloucester. In 2001 they “saw the light” and moved here permanently to participate in this great community. Maggie is an active volunteer in local organizations, most recently the City Hall Restoration Commission, Gloucester Education Foundation, Cape Ann Museum, and Generous Gardeners. As a Cape Ann Museum docent, she serves as an ambassador for Gloucester by introducing visitors, especially cruise ship visitors, to Cape Ann’s history and culture. CAM’s Fresnel lighthouse lens is her favorite piece in the Museum because it exemplifies how science, technology and art were combined to address an urgent need in maritime safety.

The Pumpkins are Coming!!!! The West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational church is again selling pumpkins at 488 Essex Ave during October.  The pumpkins are being delivered by very big truck about 3:00 pm on Saturday, Sept 26th.  It is our task to empty the truck and all are invited to help us in this family friendly event.  Yes, it is labor intensive and we have a good crew of kids who are taking the lead on this project.  It is also a lot of fun!   Anyone is welcome to come help and meet other folks in the community. Sales will start the next day after church.   We also invite any businesses to come shop for their October decorating needs. The pumpkins are grown on indigenous lands in New Mexico, helping with indigenous employment for the area. They are non-GMO and are of very good quality, lasting a long time and great for cooking too.  Many different varieties are available. Please come help us unload the truck!

Step inside the breathtaking home of one of the most prolific inventors of the 20th century, John Hays Hammond, Jr. In keeping with our founder’s original vision for his seaside castle-home to serve as a museum offering the Gloucester community access to ancient works of architectural art, Hammond Castle Museum is pleased to offer free self-guided tours to Gloucester residents every Tuesday throughout the regular tour season, which runs through early November, and during the holiday season, Museum-wide temporary exhibit, Deck the Halls. One hundred years ago, John Hays Hammond Jr. embarked on one of the most ambitious projects of his life: building Hammond Castle Museum. But why construct a brand new medieval-inspired castle after already transforming his previous home into a castle-like residence? And why was Hammond absent during the first year of construction, entrusting oversight of the project to one of the Hammond Research Laboratory's engineers? Join us as Collections Director Beth Welin takes us on a fascinating look back at 1926 as we explore the personal, professional, and historical events that shaped Hammond's life during this pivotal year. Greater Cape Ann Regional College & Career Fair The Greater Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Ipswich, Gloucester,  Rockport and Manchester-Essex High Schools, invites you and your family to join us on Wednesday, September 30th from 6:00 to 7:30pm, for the Greater Cape Ann Regional College & Career Fair, to be held at the Ipswich High School Lower Gymnasium 1.  Why should I attend? The Chamber's business leaders have partnered with our area schools to bring over 100 colleges and universities to the event, along with local business leaders, to help you explore career opportunities and associated educational pathways. 2.  What will I get out of it – how will it help me? In addition to the higher education prospects, we will also have industries and opportunities represented that do not require college degrees, including the trades and Armed Forces. Representatives will be there to help answer questions and guide you in your decision making. 3. Explore employment opportunities Speak with area businesses about job openings and potential internships to help you unlock your personal roadmap towards a career on Cape Ann or beyond. 3.  What will it cost me?  There is no charge for this event. Get your Tail on the Trails! Join Cape Ann Animal Aid for a 2.6-mile hike in Dogtown Woods with your pup to fundraise for Cape Ann Animal Aid! Register for this event, and then create your own fundraiser to keep the good momentum going! All funds raised will support homeless animals at Cape Ann Animal Aid. Register as a walker: Registration is required for walkers, and all registrations help support life-saving work! Click "Donate or Register to Walk" to get started. Note: kids under 5 years old and dogs walk free, but we would still like you to register them for an accurate head (and paw!) count. How to Fundraise: Help raise crucial funds to help homeless animals! You can make our event as successful as possible by creating your own fundraising page. Our suggested goal for each individual fundraiser is $200, but feel free to set any goal that feels achievable to you! Fundraisers who raise over $50 will get a free "Tails on the Trails" t-shirt (additional t-shirts available for purchase). To create your personal page, click "Start Fundraising!". Time: The main group for the hike will kick off at 10am. Late starts are welcome but will cut off at 12pm. Pets: Friendly, leashed and vaccinated dogs are welcome to join you on the trails! Because not all pups appreciate crowds or being approached by other dogs, we are asking all participants to kindly keep their pets on-leash for the duration of their walk. Wake Up Spirit  1st Sunday every month, 11am-1pm At Floating Lotus Gloucester Wake Up Spirit is a dance of heart and community. A safe place to connect to spirit through movement and sound. We are so blessed to have this time and space to move our bodies freely, without judgement, to dance our prayers and dreams together.  We gather on the first Sunday of every month at the Floating Lotus on Main Street in Gloucester. Join us for this celebration of life. Feel free to join for the full event or just drop in for a while. We usually start with a warm up of yoga or meditation followed by movement and listening to live music presented by Jon and Lisa and friends.  $10-$15 suggested donation. Kids are free.
