Join us for the 2025 Holiday Season as we proudly present our seventh annual "Deck The Halls" holiday celebration! Travel back in time to a castle filled with lush, opulent textures inspired by the great medieval and Renaissance castles of Europe. Wander through rooms adorned with White Birch and Christmas trees, sparkling fairy lights, hydrangea-lace garlands, and elegant bows, each space transformed with its own unique holiday theme. From nature's bounty of fruits and greenery to the warm glow of candlelight, every detail creates a true feast for the senses. Along the way, you will encounter a royal guard of nutcrackers standing watch over a gingerbread house replica of the castle. Keep an eye out for playful elves and gnomes who are up to mischief - great fun for little ones! This year, the celebration will also shine with the glow of two menorahs on display, honoring the traditions of Hanukkah within the Museum's holiday splendor. For the first time, we are pleased to feature design elements created in partnership with Elaine Quinn Interiors, a boutique residential interior design firm based in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA, bringing fresh inspiration and artistry to this year's holiday presentation. In addition to the holiday installation, guests will also have the opportunity to experience the Hammond in Italy temporary exhibition, which highlights John Hays Hammond Jr.'s time abroad and the profound influence Italian art and architecture had on his vision for the castle. Guests should plan for approximately 60 minutes in total to take in the full holiday grandeur.

For over a century, the granite industry played a vital role in Cape Ann’s economy, providing work for men from across New England and around the world, generating profits for those fortunate enough to share in ownership of the region’s many quarries, and contributing to the unique and authentic sense of place that characterizes Cape Ann today. On a broader scale, the industry contributed significantly to building and transportation projects across our nation during a sustained period of growth and expansion. Drawing on the Cape Ann Museum’s extensive holdings of objects and archival materials related to the industry, most of which were gifted to the Cape Ann Museum by historian Barbara Erkkila (1918-2013), Hammers on Stone will explore the history of the granite trade and its impact on the community. The exhibition will examine methods of harvesting, cutting, and finishing stone, as well as how granite was transported from quarry to wharf and further afield. The exhibit will also explore the lives of those involved in quarrying and consider how the industry helped shape Cape Ann’s artistic landscape, inspiring generations of artists to the present day.

New this year! Six houses in town plus the Museum, decorated for the holidays. Back Bay Ringers (BBR) is an advanced, auditioned community handbell ensemble based in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 2003 as the nation’s first open and affirming handbell ensemble dedicated to friends and members of the LGBTQIA+ community, BBR has quickly developed a reputation for excellence with performances at the Shalin Liu Performance Center, Symphony Hall, the Boston Children’s Museum, and the Prudential Center, and has collaborated with renowned local arts organizations including The Handel and Haydn Society, The Boston Pops, Coro Allegro, and the Boston Children’s Chorus. Under the leadership of artistic director Griff Gall, BBR has grown into one of the country’s most innovative handbell organizations. In its short history, BBR has founded the Boston Handbell Festival, an annual celebration bringing together the region’s best community and church handbell ensembles, with proceeds donated toward the purchase of handchimes for a selected Boston-area school. BBR has also commissioned multiple original works and arrangements, sponsored workshops with noted handbell composers, and performed throughout the Northeast.

On Saturday (Performance at 7:00 pm), guests have two ticket options. As Thanksgiving approaches, we know that the holiday season is nearly here, so it’s time to start marking your calendars with December concerts and gatherings. The Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation is pleased to present the Dashing Rock Trio in a Celtic Christmas Concert with timeless melodies reimagined, on Saturday December 6th at 7:30pm in the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, at the corner of Middle and Church Streets. Based on the isle of Nahant in Boston Harbor, Dashing Rock Trio explores the music of the Celtic nations and beyond with varied instrumentation, including fiddle, nyckelharpa, flute, whistle, guitar, accordion, Scottish smallpipes and voice. Elizabeth Ketudat, Dave Cabral, and Sarah MacConduibh have performed together for decades in multiple ensembles. They bring their deep friendship and experience to create the ensemble’s unique sound, a blend of tradition and fresh interpretation. Dashing Rock Trio performs at festivals, concerts, and private events. Whether on a grand stage or a cozy local venue, they bring vibrant energy and musicianship to every performance.  We are delighted to present them to the community in the fine acoustics of our historic 1806 Meetinghouse. Tickets are available at the door and online (recommended) with more information on our website.  General admission is $30, students $10, under age 12 free. Parking is available on the Green, entered between the granite pillars at 50 Middle Street, and around the Historic District.  The side entrance at 10 Church Street offers elevator access.

Travel back in time to a castle filled with lush, opulent textures inspired by the great medieval and Renaissance castles of Europe. Wander through rooms adorned with White Birch and Christmas trees, sparkling fairy lights, hydrangea-lace garlands, and elegant bows, each space transformed with its own unique holiday theme. From nature's bounty of fruits and greenery to the warm glow of candlelight, every detail creates a true feast for the senses. Along the way, you will encounter a royal guard of nutcrackers standing watch over a gingerbread house replica of the castle. Keep an eye out for playful elves and gnomes who are up to mischief - great fun for little ones! This year, the celebration will also shine with the glow of two menorahs on display, honoring the traditions of Hanukkah within the Museum's holiday splendor. For the first time, we are pleased to feature design elements created in partnership with Elaine Quinn Interiors, a boutique residential interior design firm based in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA, bringing fresh inspiration and artistry to this year's holiday presentation. In addition to the holiday installation, guests will also have the opportunity to experience the Hammond in Italy temporary exhibition, which highlights John Hays Hammond Jr.'s time abroad and the profound influence Italian art and architecture had on his vision for the castle. For over a century, the granite industry played a vital role in Cape Ann’s economy, providing work for men from across New England and around the world, generating profits for those fortunate enough to share in ownership of the region’s many quarries, and contributing to the unique and authentic sense of place that characterizes Cape Ann today. On a broader scale, the industry contributed significantly to building and transportation projects across our nation during a sustained period of growth and expansion. Drawing on the Cape Ann Museum’s extensive holdings of objects and archival materials related to the industry, most of which were gifted to the Cape Ann Museum by historian Barbara Erkkila (1918-2013), Hammers on Stone will explore the history of the granite trade and its impact on the community. The exhibition will examine methods of harvesting, cutting, and finishing stone, as well as how granite was transported from quarry to wharf and further afield. The exhibit will also explore the lives of those involved in quarrying and consider how the industry helped shape Cape Ann’s artistic landscape, inspiring generations of artists to the present day.

Join us for the 2025 Holiday Season as we proudly present our seventh annual "Deck The Halls" holiday celebration! Travel back in time to a castle filled with lush, opulent textures inspired by the great medieval and Renaissance castles of Europe. Wander through rooms adorned with White Birch and Christmas trees, sparkling fairy lights, hydrangea-lace garlands, and elegant bows, each space transformed with its own unique holiday theme. From nature's bounty of fruits and greenery to the warm glow of candlelight, every detail creates a true feast for the senses. Along the way, you will encounter a royal guard of nutcrackers standing watch over a gingerbread house replica of the castle. Keep an eye out for playful elves and gnomes who are up to mischief - great fun for little ones! This year, the celebration will also shine with the glow of two menorahs on display, honoring the traditions of Hanukkah within the Museum's holiday splendor. For over a century, the granite industry played a vital role in Cape Ann’s economy, providing work for men from across New England and around the world, generating profits for those fortunate enough to share in ownership of the region’s many quarries, and contributing to the unique and authentic sense of place that characterizes Cape Ann today. On a broader scale, the industry contributed significantly to building and transportation projects across our nation during a sustained period of growth and expansion. Drawing on the Cape Ann Museum’s extensive holdings of objects and archival materials related to the industry, most of which were gifted to the Cape Ann Museum by historian Barbara Erkkila (1918-2013), Hammers on Stone will explore the history of the granite trade and its impact on the community. The exhibition will examine methods of harvesting, cutting, and finishing stone, as well as how granite was transported from quarry to wharf and further afield. The exhibit will also explore the lives of those involved in quarrying and consider how the industry helped shape Cape Ann’s artistic landscape, inspiring generations of artists to the present day.

Begin with conversation, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Center, then move to the James Center to view the original.  Gabrielle de Veaux Clements was a pioneering American artist whose legacy is deeply woven into the cultural fabric of Cape Ann. Trained in Philadelphia and Paris, Clements was a master of etching, mural painting, and aquatint, and she brought her refined techniques to Gloucester in the 1880s. Alongside her lifelong friend and fellow artist Ellen Day Hale, she helped establish Folly Cove as a vibrant artist enclave, mentoring younger creatives and contributing to the region’s artistic identity. Her works—ranging from intimate harbor scenes to monumental public murals—reflect both technical brilliance and a profound connection to place. Join us as we explore how Clements’ summers on Cape Ann shaped her career and helped define a generation of women artists in American art history.  This program will repeat December 11. From there, embark on a fully guided Candlelight Tour through the Hammond Castle Museum. Inspired by John Hays Hammond Jr.’s preference for working through the night at the encouragement of his mentor, Alexander Graham Bell, these tours highlight the Hammonds’ lives within their home while showcasing the Museum in a new light. Guests are invited to carry the provided miniature electronic lanterns as they explore each space. Inside, the Museum is transformed with lush, opulent décor inspired by the great medieval and Renaissance castles of Europe. Each room is reimagined with its own holiday theme, from White Birch and Christmas trees to sparkling fairy lights, hydrangea-lace garlands, and elegant bows. From nature’s bounty of fruits and greenery to the warm glow of candlelight, every detail creates a feast for the senses. Along the way, you will encounter a royal guard of nutcrackers standing watch over a gingerbread house replica of the castle. Children and the young at heart will delight in spotting playful elves and gnomes tucked into corners and alcoves. This year’s celebration will also shine with the light of two menorahs, honoring the traditions of Hanukkah within the Museum's holiday splendor. For the first time, the décor includes special design elements created in partnership with Elaine Quinn Interiors of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, bringing fresh artistry to this much-loved tradition. A single poem can be an ecstatic encounter with what Rudolf Otto called the mysterium tremendum. In this five-week seminar we will study sublime examples by Hopkins, Blake, Brigit Pegeen Kelly, and other classic and contemporary poets. Brief in-class writing with prompts and lively open discussion will deepen our own work and aim to bring us closer to that oceanic awe found in poetry alone. Leslie Williams’ most recent of three poetry collections is Matters for You Alone (Slant Books, 2024), just longlisted for the Massachusetts Book Awards. Her work has appeared in Poetry, The Southern Review, Image, Verse Daily, Kenyon Review, America, and elsewhere. Honors include the Bellday Prize and the Poetry Society of America’s Robert Winner Award.

Join us for the 2025 Holiday Season as we proudly present our seventh annual "Deck The Halls" holiday celebration! Travel back in time to a castle filled with lush, opulent textures inspired by the great medieval and Renaissance castles of Europe. Wander through rooms adorned with White Birch and Christmas trees, sparkling fairy lights, hydrangea-lace garlands, and elegant bows, each space transformed with its own unique holiday theme. From nature's bounty of fruits and greenery to the warm glow of candlelight, every detail creates a true feast for the senses. Along the way, you will encounter a royal guard of nutcrackers standing watch over a gingerbread house replica of the castle. Keep an eye out for playful elves and gnomes who are up to mischief - great fun for little ones! This year, the celebration will also shine with the glow of two menorahs on display, honoring the traditions of Hanukkah within the Museum's holiday splendor. For the first time, we are pleased to feature design elements created in partnership with Elaine Quinn Interiors, a boutique residential interior design firm based in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA, bringing fresh inspiration and artistry to this year's holiday presentation. In addition to the holiday installation, guests will also have the opportunity to experience the Hammond in Italy temporary exhibition, which highlights John Hays Hammond Jr.'s time abroad and the profound influence Italian art and architecture had on his vision for the castle. Guests should plan for approximately 60 minutes in total to take in the full holiday grandeur.
