The Falmouth Genealogical Society (FGS) will hold its monthly talk Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 10:00 am-12:00 pm at the Falmouth Public Library, 300 Main Street, Falmouth. Jeff Schiebe, presenting in person, will use a recent trip to Germany to describe the tools and activities for effectively planning and implementing a successful journey. Included will be pre-trip planning and research, how to ensure the best possible visit, and most importantly, finding new genealogical records, documents, and photos. The processes and tools presented will be applicable to any visit to your international or domestic ancestral home — even a virtual visit. Jeff is an avid genealogist and has been doing genealogy research on his family, both in the USA and abroad, for over 40 years. Jeff eagerly shares the tools and techniques he has used along his genealogical journey. He has given many presentations on numerous topics to genealogy clubs, senior centers, libraries and family foundations in Massachusetts and across the country both in person and via Zoom. Jeff is also active and on the board of directors of the Cape Cod Genealogical Society and launched a genealogy club in his hometown of Southborough, MA in 2023. This event is held at Woods Hole Public Library The Woods Hole Public Library will welcome scientist, engineer, and experimentalist Jordan R. M. Kennedy to speak on Monday, March 23, at 6pm. Kennedy’s Ph.D thesis in materials science and mechanical engineering as well as her recent work focuses on how partnering with beavers can help restore North American landscapes. She is passionate about bridging science, traditional knowledge, and engineering to restore landscapes and reconnect with tradition and land. A member of the Blackfeet tribe, Kennedy has worked as the Tribal Partnerships Liaison and Beaver Behaviorist at the Beaver Institute, promoting the incorporation of tribal knowledge and Indigenous representation in the dissemination of knowledge about best practices concerning beavers in North American waterways. She is currently a ​​Traditional Ecological Knowledge Postdoctoral Researcher in Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and in partnership with the Tlingit Tribe of southeast Alaska, her research is focused on clam gardens, a highly productive Indigenous aquaculture technology engineered and stewarded for millennia by many Tribes across the Pacific Northwest. For her talk at the Woods Hole Public Library, Kennedy will share her expertise on beaver ingenuity. Beavers are some of the best engineers in North America; they build dams, dig canals, and can completely transform a valley. Kennedy has helped to build a new computer tool to simulate that process, starting with real landscape data (like maps of elevation and water flow) and then adding realistic beaver behavior. The result is a simulation where “virtual beavers” move around, make choices about where to build, and slowly reshape the landscape as they go.The goal is to use this tool to support restoration planning, especially projects designed to work with beavers rather than against them. With her work connecting science and technology with Indigenous knowledge and practices, Kennedy’s research ties in perfectly with the 2026 Falmouth Reads Together selection – “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer. In the book, Kimmerer strives to blend scientific knowledge with Indigenous wisdom, particularly from her Potawatomi heritage, to explore humanity’s reciprocal relationship with the natural world. Join us for a special virtual conversation between award-winning journalist Shoshana Walter and bestselling and award-winning author Barbara Kingsolver as they chat about Walter’s book Rehab: An American Scandal. In this work, Walter, a Pulitzer finalist, exposes the country’s failed response to the opioid crisis, and the malfeasance, corruption, and snake oil which blight the drug rehabilitation industry. Today, more people have access to treatment than ever before. So why isn’t it working? The answer is that in America—where anyone can get addicted—only certain people get a real chance to recover. Despite record numbers of overdose deaths, our default response is still to punish, while rehabs across the United States fail to incorporate scientifically proven strategies and exploit patients. In this book, you’ll find the stories of four people who represent the failures of the rehab-industrial complex, and the ways our treatment system often prevents recovery. April is a black mom in Philadelphia, who witnessed firsthand how the government’s punitive response to the crack epidemic impeded her mother’s recovery—and then her own. Chris, a young middle-class white man from Louisiana, received more opportunities in his addiction than April, including the chance to go to treatment instead of prison. Yet the only program the judge permitted was one that forced him to perform unpaid back-breaking labor at for-profit companies. Wendy is a mother from a wealthy suburb of Los Angeles, whose son died in a sober living home. She began investigating for-profit treatment programs—yet law enforcement and regulators routinely ignored her warnings, allowing rehab patients to die, again and again. Larry is a surgeon who himself struggled with addiction, and would eventually become one of the first Suboxone prescribers in the nation, drawing the scrutiny of the Drug Enforcement Administration. About the Author: Shoshana Walter is a reporter for the Marshall Project covering the criminal justice system. She started her work on the treatment system at The Center for Investigative Reporting, where her work appeared in The New York Times Magazine, in newspapers, and on NPR stations across the country. She is based in Oakland, California. About the Guest Host: Barbara Ellen Kingsolver is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, essayist, and poet. Her widely known works include The Poisonwood Bible, the tale of a missionary family in the Congo, and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, a nonfiction account of her family's attempts to eat locally. In 2023, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the novel Demon Copperhead. Her work often focuses on topics such as social justice, biodiversity, and the interaction between humans and their communities and environments. Falmouth Reads Together - Permafrost Pathways and The Intersection of Indigenous Communities and Western Science  Join Dr. Sue Natali and Brooke LaRae Woods of Woodwell Climate Research Center for a thoughtful discussion on the intersection of Western science and Indigenous knowledge in climate research. Drawing from their work in Arctic permafrost regions, Dr. Natali and Woods will explore how scientific research and Indigenous ways of knowing can inform and strengthen one another. This conversation will examine how collaboration, reciprocity, and community partnerships are shaping climate science today, and why elevating Indigenous voices is essential in understanding environmental change. This program invites participants to consider how multiple knowledge systems can work together in response to a rapidly changing climate. Brooke LaRae Woods  Brooke Woods (Dlel Taaneets) was raised at fish camp on the Yukon River in Rampart, Alaska. She currently develops strategies with policymakers and Indigenous communities for Woodwell’s Arctic Permafrost Pathway project, focusing on just, science-backed, Arctic policy. Her work supports Indigenous-led adaptation and relocation governance frameworks. Woods is raising her family and completing a bachelor’s degree in tribal governance of fisheries at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). She previously worked as a fisheries policy analyst at the Tanana Chiefs Conference and served as executive chair for the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission for six years. Sue Natali I am an Arctic climate scientist whose focus on permafrost thaw is motivated by an acute awareness of the risks it poses. I have worked extensively across the Arctic, in Alaska, Siberia, and elsewhere, combining field research of permafrost and carbon cycling with remote sensing and modeling to assess current and future climate impacts across the Arctic. I lead the Permafrost Pathways Initiative, which brings together leading experts in climate science, policy action, and environmental justice to assess the local to global impacts of permafrost thaw and other climate changes in the Arctic, in order to inform climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. A dragon’s eye shines through a crack in the mountain side. With a glare of the eye, the dragon warns any thieves that may try to steal their treasure from beneath their feet. It is also said that a dragon’s eye sees far more than the human eye making it an essential piece of any adventurer’s pack. Some dragon’s eyes are stronger than others…Ones made of cloth and metal are helpful but to truly use the power of the dragon eye, it must be made of glass and the earth of a dragon’s mountain. The painting of the dragon’s eye gives it special strengths that vary due to the design, colors, and look. If done correctly, it may lead an adventurer to a priceless dragon’s egg. A dragon to be born of the adventurer… Are you heading out on an adventure anytime soon? Well, a glass dragon’s eye is a necessity for success! Don’t have one? Falmouth Public Library has you covered.  The event is 100% free and all materials are provided free of charge. The event will run from 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM in the Young Adult Room.
