Many native plants require a period of alternating freezing and thawing to unlock germination.During this workshop you will learn how to make miniature greenhouses using translucent gallon jugs, we will plant seeds in them and when you take them home you will place them outside exposed to the winter weather. Planting in this way protects the seeds and seedlings from animals and prevents weeds. When the plants have germinated you will transplant seedlings in your garden.Please bring a couple of empty and cleaned translucent water or milk jugs (gallon size). We will have a few extra gallon jugs available for people who might need them.If you have any of these items please bring them.· Cordless drill with a ¼ in. bit· Sharp scissors· Utility knife/box cutter· Empty yogurt containers or other plastic dairy products containers for making labels· Old wash cloth/small towel to wipe spills as we work· A box to carry your “greenhouses” homeLabel all shared materials with your name.Most folks don’t use garden gloves but bring them if you wish.Potting soil and seeds will be provided, as well as duct tape and plant labels markers.Seeds have been collected at the Pollination Preservation Garden at Sunny Meadow Farm and provide pollen and nectar for at risk bees and food for butterflies.

This month's book is The Cost of Free Land by Rebecca Clarren (2023) 335 pages.Journalist Clarren (Kickdown) provides an empathetic and eye-opening account of her attempts to reconstruct her great-grandparents’ state of mind when they fled Russian pogroms in the 1880s and settled alongside other Jewish homesteaders in western South Dakota on land taken from the Lakota people, who continued to live on nearby reservations. Tracing the parallel history of the two groups and their sporadic interactions, Clarren notes that the settlement where her ancestors lived, called Jew Flats by its residents, was home to 45 homesteads, and that most of its families only continued farming for one or two generations due to the harsh conditions. The Lakota, meanwhile, were victims of an ongoing genocide and large-scale theft of their land; in 1904, for example, the federal government decreed that 9.3 million acres of Lakota land were “surplus” and thus open to white settlement. Clarren melds investigative reporting with personal family history to reveal the intertwined stories of her family and the Lakota, and the devastating cycle of loss of Indigenous land, culture, and resources that continues today. She holds a master’s in Art History from Boston University and a master’s in Education from Harvard University. Born and raised in New Hampshire, she has worked at some of the state's most esteemed cultural institutions, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, where she served as Executive Director, and the Currier Museum of Art, where she held the role of Senior Educator. Jane has also taught at the college level for more than a decade, most recently at Southern New Hampshire University.
