Welcome to Monday Craft Club! Monday Craft Club is a great way for adults to try new arts and crafts while easing stress and having fun - no experience necessary! Craft Club may feature open crafting, staff-led projects, or art-based programming. All crafts focus more on joy than the outcome, allowing all to tap into their creative freedom. Monthly registration is required to secure your spot and space is limited. This month we will be making stone bird ornaments to give as gifts during the festive holiday season! Follow along with Rachelle Toth as she guides you through all the steps needed to make a sweet and wintery gift for yourself or a loved one. Using paint to enhance natural materials, each participant will leave with a completed holiday decoration to welcome in the season. Thanks to the Friends of the Eldredge Public Library and to those who donate craft materials for making this programming possible! Please note: This program is for ages 18 and older. In this course, John Basile will lead discussions of jazz, one of the few original art forms to emerge from the United States. Its first star was Louis Armstrong, the great trumpet player and equally great singer. Other greats who shaped the music’s development include Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and Ella Fitzgerald. The course will include information on all of these musicians and more, and we’ll listen to examples of their music as we trace the development of jazz from primarily a blues-influenced dance music through the Swing Era, Bebop, Modal Jazz and into the Avant Garde. The course will conclude with a session on jazz on Cape Cod.This is a three part Series: Nov 24, Dec 1 and 8This program is part of the Friends of the Eldredge Public Library Learning Series. A $10 donation per course is suggested. All net proceeds are used by the Friends of the EPL to support the Library. Johnson, author of Julia Child’s Kitchen: The Design, Tools, Stories, and Legacy of an Iconic Space. Johnson is a curator and public historian at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, DC. She conducts research and collects objects relating to the history and culture of American food and serves as the Director of the Smithsonian’s Food History Project. Johnson was one of the curators who collected Julia Child’s home kitchen in 2001 and led the team that created FOOD: Transforming the American Table, a multi-layered exhibition that explores the major changes in food production, distribution, and consumption in the United States since the 1950s. She has shaped and contributed to many public programs on food history and leads the annual “Food History Weekend.” Johnson is the author of many articles and three books, including Julia Child’s Kitchen: The Design, Tools Stories, and Legacy of an Iconic Space (2024). She received the Smithsonian Distinguished Scholar in the Humanities Award in 2020.Johnson began her museum career at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, Maryland, and has worked at the Smithsonian since 1991. She is a member of the Association for the Study of Food and Society and Les Dames d’ Escoffier. She serves on the editorial collective for Gastronomica: The Journal for Food Studies.

First, though, came the short novel by Charles Dickens – always in print, but, in a mass-media age, sometimes overlooked.
