Over the course of their existence, the Boston Harbor Islands have served a variety of purposes for inhabitants of the Greater Boston area. Some communities have approached their relationship with the islands through the lens of reciprocity and communal use, while other communities have viewed the islands as places of boundless resources and spaces apart from the mainland. This presentation will explore the many historic uses of the Boston Harbor Islands and examine the role of environmental justice throughout their existence.This is part of a program series in partnership with the Boston Public Library.

Calling all Scouts!Visit the Charlestown Navy Yard for Scout Day–a special day of activities just for BSA Scouts and Girl Scouts. Scouts will learn about life at sea in 1812 and life in the Navy today, all while meeting requirements for scout rank advancement badges. Explore the Museum and Ship as you stop at different activity stations throughout the Navy Yard. There will be something for all ages, so come as a scout, a family, or as a troop! All registered scouts will receive a special USS Constitution Museum Scout Day patch.Activities include:Tour USS Constitution, a national landmark. Don’t forget to bring your troop’s American flag to fly on board and fold with a Navy crew member.Build and race your own ship out of household materials in our Ship Design Challenge.Join in knot-tying challenges and 1812 sailor games.Express your creativity at the “Paint a battle” and “Make a Captain’s Hat” maker stations.Participate in a mock 1812 gun drill with your troop.Meet USS Constitution’s active-duty Navy crew.Write a letter of encouragement to a new Navy recruit in boot camp.Please note, the Museum will provide evidence of completed activities, but will not provide any merit badges at this event.

Slave catchers were allowed to roam free states in search of runaways and mandated the assistance of state and local authorities, as well as the public, in returning freedom seekers to slavery. Met with outrage in the North, many communities rose in defiance to the law. Join in for a sensory-friendly morning at the USS Constitution Museum! Learn about the incredible history of America’s Ship of State in a quieter setting, without loud sounds or flashing lights, and before the museum opens to the public at 10:00 AM. Design a ship, furl a sail, and scrub the decks in our hands-on exhibits that are designed for sailors of all abilities and backgrounds.This offering is open to visitors of all ages, as well as their friends, families, and caregivers. Registration is required and limited to 35 people. Admission by donation.

Can a fashion doll from England find friendship and happiness in colonial America? Revolutionary Spaces is honored to host the Polly Sumner: Witness to the Boston Tea Party Book Launch on Wednesday, April 19 at the Old South Meeting House.Author Richard C. Wiggin will read excerpts from his new children’s book, which tells the story of Polly Sumner, a real doll that arrived in Boston aboard one of the Tea Party ships 250 years ago. Beautifully illustrated by local artist/illustrator Keith Favazza, this book is both a heartwarming tale and an educational primer for kids. Following the reading, Revolutionary Spaces will host a panel discussion with Wiggin, Favazza, historian Dr. Robert Allison, and author Vivian Kirkfield. Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase a copy of Polly Sumner: Witness to the Boston Tea Party and have their book signed by the author.While at this program, view a stunning reproduction of the Polly Sumner doll, made possible through the generous support of Richard C. Wiggin and Agnes Connors. On display for a limited time starting in April 2023, the Polly Sumner doll can tell her stories just in time for the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party! Associate Director of Collections Lori Erickson will be on hand to talk with guests about the reproduction and original doll, which is currently part of Revolutionary Spaces’ expansive collection. A letter-writing station will also be available for guests to send fan mail to Polly Sumner.
