Feminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewart’s book, The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic, tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women, in secrecy and subterfuge, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. Conjure informs our lives in ways remarkable and ordinary—from traditional medicines that informed the creation of Vicks VapoRub and the rise of Aunt Jemima’s Pancake Mix, to the original magic of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2023), and the true origins of the all-American classic blue jean. From the moment enslaved Africans first arrived on these shores, conjure was heavily regulated and even outlawed. Now, Stewart uncovers new contours of American history, sourcing letters from the enslaved, dispatches from the lore of Oshun and other African mystics. The Conjuring of America is a love letter to the real magic Black women used, their herbs, food, textiles, song, and dance, used to sow rebellion, freedom, and hope. "Chandler Travis makes magical thinking real... gorgeous, exotically melodic songs." - John Swenson, Stereophile "Smart, swinging and winningly strange... a fairly fantastical free-wheeling show full of memorable tunes." -Dan DeLuca, Philadelphia Inquirer  The Chandler Travis Three-O is a smaller satellite version of the Chandler Travis Philharmonic, and includes Chandler on guitars, string bassist John Clark, saxophonist, keyboardist, and clarinetist Berke McKelvey, Fred Boak, and in this case percussionist Rikki Bates. They play an extremely diverse assortment of original acoustic rock, jazz, etc. and the scaling down seems to engage people in a disarming and surprisingly unassuming way. On February 18, 1952, four courageous crew members from U.S. Coast Guard Station Chatham, launched a 36-foot wooden motor lifeboat into the teeth of a raging Nor’east storm to rescue sailors stranded on a stricken tanker, SS PENDLETON, that had broken in half and was drifting off Monomoy Island. Battling 40-foot waves, freezing temperatures and dangerous shoals, the Coast Guardsmen were able to save 32 of the 33 crew members aboard PENDLETON and safely return them to Chatham – a feat that is still considered to be the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history. The PENDLETON rescue mission was highlighted in the best-selling book, The Finest Hours, written by famed Cape Cod author Casey Sherman, and later was made into a Disney-produced feature-length move of the same name. The four crew members, led by Massachusetts native Bernie Webber, each received the Gold Lifesaving Award – the Coast Guard’s highest individual honor – for their heroic efforts on that fateful Cape Cod night. Coast Guard Auxiliary member Reid Oslin, a Cape Cod resident, has done extensive research on the PENDLETON rescue and has shared the fascinating story with numerous groups throughout the area. About the Presenter Reid Oslin is a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and a communications watchstander at Coast Guard Station Chatham. In nearly 12 years as a Coast Guard watchstander, Reid has participated in dozens of search-and-rescue missions and has served in numerous command and publications assignments in Auxiliary, the Coast Guard's civilian branch. Prior to retiring her on Cape Cod, Reid worked for 42 years in media relations and public affairs at Boston College. Presented in partnership between the Brewster Conservation Trust and the Brewster Ladies’ Library Association’s Discovery & Enrichment Series, this second program in the series will focus on coastal resilience. Chris Gloninger, senior climate scientist with the Woods Hold Group, will provide background on the science of climate mitigation and adaptation, provide examples of how storms and other weather events are impacting our local shoreline and properties, and review some of the actions taken by other communities.
