Did you know that in order to receive regulatory protection, a vernal pool must first be certified? The certification process relies on citizens and volunteers to assess vernal pools and submit documentation to MassWildlife.Join us online via Zoom to participate virtually in Scott Jackson's presentation at the Millers River Environmental Center on vernal pool certification. Scott is a recently retired Extension Professor in the Department of Environmental Conservation at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and has long been a leader in wetland and amphibian conservation.Scott's work includes the development of wildlife underpass systems to support safe animal movement across roads, landscape-based modeling and assessment tools, and the creation of the Conservation Assessment and Prioritization System. During his presentation, Scott will explain the vernal pool certification process, how volunteers can get involved, and why certifying vernal pools is so important for protecting wildlife habitat.

In cooperation with Ware River Nature Club: High Ridge Wildlife Management Area is 1,040 acres of meadows, grasslands, forests and wetlands that make great habitats for migrating warblers, ducks, herons, rails and other locally breeding birds. We will walk about 2 miles on dirt paths and once-paved roads with a few hills of about 50 feet of elevation difference. Waterproof boots are recommended. There are no restrooms on site.  Participants are encouraged to bring snacks and water.
