Explore the life of a lockkeeper and family in the 1870's time period with a guided tour of one of the C& O Canal's original lockhouses. Girl Scouts offer free tours of the lockhouse and grounds at Lock 24. In addition there may be various Victorian demonstrations such as laundry cider pressing making lemonade churning butter or ice cream and more. Visitors are welcome to participate in the activities and taste the results. Open every Saturday and Sunday 1pm-4pm March 21st through July 12th and August 16th through December 12th.  The lockhouse will be closed for bad weather. 

Lockhouse 44 - Williamsport

Seven days a week 24 hours a day in all weather lockkeepers attended to canal traffic. Lockkeepers were responsible for opening and closing the 74 lift locks along the canal. A lift lock works like a water elevator raising or lowering a boat 8 to 10 feet. The lockkeeper......More

Seven days a week 24 hours a day in all weather lockkeepers attended to canal traffic. Lockkeepers were responsible for opening and closing the 74 lift locks along the canal. A lift lock works like a water elevator raising or lowering a boat 8 to 10 feet. The lockkeeper was given a salary a lockhouse and an acre of land for livestock and a garden. Lockhouse 44 is one of little more than a dozen surviving lock houses on the C& O Canal and remains as evidence of a bygone way of life. Harvey Brant the last lockkeeper at Lock 44 operated the lock from 1915 - 1924. The Brant family left in 1961 decades after canal ceased operations.Today the lockhouse has been restored and the interior is furnished as it would have been in the 1920s. Our staff and volunteers offer free tours of the lockhouse and grounds at Lock 44. *Inclement weather including high winds rain and extreme heat may cause tours to be cancelled.

Lock 44 is located 1/2 mile downstream from Cushwa Basin Visitor Center.

Built in 1801 by Abner Cloud Jr. the house is considered one of the finest examples of Federal architecture in Washington D.C. Pre-dating the construction of the C& O Canal the home of Abner Cloud served as the center of the family farm and fishing business.  Tour the Abner Cloud House and learn more about early 19th century farming architecture and the people who lived and worked on the property. The three-story stone home is operated in parntership with The Colonial Dames of America and is open for tours on the first Sunday of each month from 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm. The Abner Cloud House is located at Fletchers Cove. Admission to Fletchers Cove and the Abner Cloud House is free.
