"Favorite Hobbies" includes everyday items hand painted to reflect the artist’s favorite hobbies: “Reading, gardening, painting, and a nice glass of wine,” she explains. She hand paints bottles with floral and nature designs, adding lights to create a lamp that is perfect for a cozy reading nook or to add a soft glow to a room.   Horton has been painting since 2005, and explains now that she’s retired, she “has the gift of time to enjoy my hobbies.” Light refreshments will be provided.

Join the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and Herring Gut Coastal Science Center to learn about and participate in a state-wide effort to document the impacts of flooding from high tides and storms. Sea level rise is already driving our high tides higher, increasing coastal flooding in Maine. On December 6th, we'll experience one of the highest predicted tides of the year. To better understand and adapt to rising seas, you can help by monitoring water level and flood impacts in our community. Saturday's conversation will explore the local effects of sea level rise and provide a hands-on training where you’ll learn how to contribute observations of local flooding to GMRI’s Coastal Flooding Community Science Project, and a reflection about flooding in your community.  The conversation will start at the Jackson Memorial Library in St. George. Then the group will walk (or drive) to observe the high tide at the Tenants Harbor Public Landing, then return to the library for shared reflection and a snack. This event is part of the South Thomaston and St. George joint Climate Action Plan project. Their mission is to empower the communities of South Thomaston and St. George to thrive amidst the challenges of a changing climate. Our project envisions a future where our towns exemplify proactive resilience and sustainable practices. With this Climate Action Plan, we will safeguard our coastal heritage, economy, and access to vital resources, ensuring long-term adaptability. This plan will be a clear roadmap, detailing strategies and funding sources to significantly reduce our carbon footprint, address climate vulnerabilities, and foster robust community engagement. Steve Thomas of “This Old House” will provide a richly illustrated presentation on his newest book, taking the audience into the world of non-instrumental navigation and a world-view of the sea largely unknown to the West. In photographs from his field work research and original film footage from "The Last Navigator" documentary film, we will be transported into a navigational world in which the "paliuw" has only his courage, his memory, and the seas own signs of land to guide him. The program will last for 30 minutes, followed by Q&A and book signing.Steve Thomas is familiar to television viewers as the two-time Emmy award-winning host of "This Old House," "Renovation Nation," and "Save Our History." He is also an experienced home builder and sailor. Beginning in 1977, he sailed a 43-foot wooden sloop from England to San Francisco via the Panama Canal, Galapagos, Marquesas, and Hawaii. In the early 1980’s, he journeyed to the remote Micronesian island of Satawal to learn the ancient technique of star path navigation, an experience that resulted in this book as well as a documentary for the PBS series "Adventure."The presentation is sponsored by the Jackson Memorial Library, and will take place at the St. George Town Office.
