First Friday: December 5, 2025 - Share the Wonder

Join us every Friday of 2025 for an evening of art, culture, and community at First Fridays! First Fridays at the Farnsworth will delight and surprise visitors with unique programming themed to our exhibitions and offering a variety of activities for people of all ages and interests. Learn more about First Fridays at the Farnsworth here. Our beloved annual event, Share The Wonder, is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the past year and look ahead to the coming year. Share The Wonder is a phrase that resonates differently for each of us, but together, we can join in community to celebrate the joys of the season. We are thankful for wonderful support from the Wyeth Foundation for this very special annual event! Join us for our First Friday on December 5th from 4 – 6 p.m. for a Share The Wonder community celebration at the Farnsworth Art Museum. The first 100 visitors through the door will receive a special sketchbook to take home with them! This year we have invited an array of talented Midcoast artists to create their vision of a festive tree which will be on display in the 365 gallery. Each artist draws their inspiration from the unique beauty of the Maine landscape. Artist-trees will include: Sharon Chandler (Marigold Studio) Hélène Farrar James Macdonald and Lucky Platt (Bunkhouse Studio) Siem Van Der Ven, Katama Murray, Anneli Skaar, and artist Hannah Berta’s window for 365 Gallery. Enjoy the sparkling holiday decorations, sip hot chocolate at the hot cocoa bar, hang a Wish Tag on the Wish tree, try your hand at art-making, sing along to holiday favorites with Oceanside High School Choir, listen to live jazz with the Bay Chamber Jazz Ensemble, decorate tree cookies by Atlantic Baking Company, and be dazzled by our artists’ trees while seeing our many featured exhibitions during our Share The Wonder celebration. In addition to our First Friday festivities, we have a variety of programs in December to enjoy, and every Sunday in December is free to visitors. 365: Dyeing & Painting with Natural Inks with Katama Murray

This class is part of our family-friendly drop-in programs at 365 Gallery and has a limit of 15 participants. We recommend pre-registering to save your spot. Please note: if you’re not checked in at least 10 minutes before the class starts, your spot will be released to any waiting drop-in registrants. In this hands-on workshop, learn the process of creating handmade dye and ink using plant pigments from natural dye baths! Students will learn the basics of natural dyeing with shibori resist methods to dye a cotton bandana, as well as extracting pigments to create a palette of liquid inks. We’ll explore mark making on fabric and paper with a collection of seasonal inks sourced from local flora and food waste. Create beautiful, one of a kind pieces that can be enjoyed for years to come, while taking time to slow down and appreciate the richness and diversity of plant pigments dwelling alongside us. All materials will be provided, and all are welcome! This workshop is suitable for ages 5+ children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. Teach Peace Prints is a small, woman-owned business led by Katama Murray, which focuses on printmaking and fiber techniques that utilize natural materials. As an eco artist, educator and naturalist, Katama is constantly inspired by patterns, shapes, and colors that dwell within these spaces and organisms. Since starting the Teach Peace Prints journey in 2020, Katama creates handmade products on paper and fabric using a variety of materials and processes, and continues to experiment with combining various techniques while mindfully collaborating with the natural world. Sewn, naturally dyed and printed by hand, TPP offers unique, one of a kind products for those who wish to bring elements of nature into their homes and daily lives. Featuring items such as everyday textiles, prints and creative supplies for fellow makers, each collection of work is seasonally inspired and is based on the importance of place. Katama believes that the process of making and constant learning in tandem with nature can help to encourage further awareness and appreciation of our natural surroundings. Cost: Pay what you wish — suggested donation: $15 per person or $30 per family (includes a $5 materials fee for each registrant.)

Farnsworth Concert Series: Cassotto Duo

Jeremiah McLane & Annemieke Spoelstra, accordion / piano (Herald / Tim Calabro) Annemieke and Jeremiah McLane, known as Cassotto Duo, have performed from coast to coast in the United States as well as in Europe. The couple make their own arrangements for piano and accordion which highlight the folk elements in classical compositions. Their music ranges from the 16th to the 21st centuries, including composers such as Bartok, Dvorak, Piazzolla, and Poulenc. Annemieke was born and raised in the Netherlands, studying for her Masters in Piano Performance at the Zwolle Conservatory with Rudy de Heus. She received Student of the Year Award for her final recital, and was collaborative pianist at the conservatories of Zwolle, Arnhem, Rotterdam, Amsterdam for different instrumentalists and vocalists. At the Sweelinck conservatory of Amsterdam she specialized in Art Song Accompaniment. At age 21 she received the National Young Music Talent Award for best accompanist, praised for her touch and coloring. After her Master’s Degree she studied privately with Tan Crone in Amsterdam, and was a finalist in Paris for the Lily and Nadia Boulanger competition. Jeremiah McLane is an accordionist with a diverse musical background including blues, jazz, Celtic, Québécois, French and other roots influenced music. He has served on the faculties of the State University of New York in Plattsburgh, the Summit School for Traditional Music in Montpelier, and at the Upper Valley Music Center in Lebanon, NH. He also teaches regularly at summer music programs throughout the United States. In 2016 Montpelier Times-Argus music critic Art Edelstein named Jeremiah musician of the year, citing his contributions in teaching, recording and performing. Jeremiah also plays with two traditional music trios: Kalos and Triton. Cost: $25 $20 for members students 17 and over $10 children 16 and younger are free. Watercolor Foundations & Creative Exploration Workshop with Erica Qualey

This class meets for 8 sessions from Monday, January 26 through Monday, March 30 with a two week break from February 16-23. In the event of inclement weather, this class will meet on Zoom. Join us for an engaging 8-week watercolor journey designed to build strong foundational skills while encouraging you to confidently develop your own creative voice. This workshop blends structured learning with the freedom of personal exploration—much like a guided studio session. Each week, we’ll focus on a key watercolor technique or concept, supported by live demonstrations, group activities, and thoughtfully selected reference images to spark ideas. You’ll have dedicated time to apply what you’ve learned to your own work, with opportunities for both one-on-one guidance and supportive group feedback. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to deepen your understanding of watercolor, this class offers a nurturing environment to experiment, grow, and connect with fellow artists. During the final class session, participants will showcase their artwork in a celebration of their progress, creativity, and growth throughout the course. Erica Qualey is an award winning watercolor artist and teacher who lives in the midcoast of Maine. She has exhibited internationally and is represented in private collections throughout the United States and Canada. She is an associate member of the New England Watercolor Society and has been published in the 19th edition of the yearly publication, Splash. She has led workshops for adults at Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, ArtWaves DMI on Mount Desert Island, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, and other art associations. She has participated in visiting artist programs in public schools and has run art programming for children through her local library. Cost: $350 $325 for members
