English Country Dance with Belfast Flying Shoes

May 17 English Country Dance (Mustachios Optional) BELFAST – On Sunday, May 17, join the fun as Belfast Flying Shoes presents our monthly English country dance, with glorious calling by David Smukler and equally glorious live music by Pegasus Collective – Steven Bluestein on clarinet & saxophone, Sam Zakon-Anderson on piano, Cecily Mills on cello, Peter Subramanian on violin. Experience the delightful breadth of English dance repertoire: energetic and regal, frisky and deliberate, simple figures, and slightly challenging sequences. Curl your mustache if you have one! English country dance, or ECD, is a folk tradition similar to our local contra dance culture, emphasizing both participatory dancing and live music, with partners and neighbors dancing together in a set. Contemporary English dancing has a rich variety of music and choreography. This month’s dance features young musicians whose childhoods were steeped in the culture of trad music and dance. Steven, Cecily, Sam, and Peter each bring a playful energy and collaborative spirit to the mastery of their respective instruments. David Smukler hails from Syracuse, NY, and is well known in English Country Dance circles across the country. He is a longtime caller, organizer, and dancer whose thoughtful attention to detail and wry sense of humor are well-loved. David is also the president of the board of the Country Dance & Song Society, a national nonprofit of which Belfast Flying Shoes is a proud affiliate member. The program starts at 6:00pm with a very brief introductory session for folks who are new to ECD and continues until 9pm. Join us Sunday May 17 at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 37 Miller Street in Belfast, which is an accessible venue. Admission is $15–$25 and includes light refreshments. All are welcome! This program is supported in part by a community grant from the Country Dance & Song Society, cdss.org. Founded in 2005, Belfast Flying Shoes builds community and cultivates well-being through the joy of traditional music and dance for people of all backgrounds and identities in Midcoast Maine.
