When: Friday, March 13 and Saturday March 14 from 9AM-3PM Description: This dynamic painting workshop with professional artist and instructor, Philip Frey, will focus on the art of still life. To help us create fresh, compelling, and successful paintings, we will utilize preparatory sketches to establish harmonious compositions and make color palette choices based on specific color contrasts. The still life is an ideal genre because we are painting from direct perception as well as learning to control all the elementsâthe objects, environment, and lightingâto our advantage. Each day will include short lectures, demonstrations, and lessons based on harmonic composition, color contrasts (strategies), and paint handling. There will be an instructional review of each studentâs work via Procreate. A materials list is found below. Philip will be painting and demonstrating in oil color. We will take an hour break for lunch (please bring your own). Fresh coffee and pastries will be included both days. Levels: Open to all mediums: oil, acrylic, watercolor, and gouache. All levels welcome but artists should be familiar with their medium of choice and have a good foundation in drawing. Artist Statement: My primary goal is to enhance the artistic development of my students, fostering their unique approach to painting while emphasizing the foundations of paintingâdrawing, composition, and colorârather than adhering to a specific artistic style. Itâs my intention to inspire artists and engender confidence in their painting by giving them practical tools and feedback. About the Instructor: In the past twenty years, Philip Frey has developed into one of Maineâs finest landscape painters. Known as a brilliant colorist, Frey paints Maineâs harbors and islands with a bold and sensitive palette that captures the light and moods of his home state, from the streets of Ellsworth and Portland to Monhegan and Acadia National Park. Philip is known for his engaging, illuminating, and positive teaching style. He is skilled at addressing his studentsâ abilities and helping them mature as artists. His monograph, Philip Frey: Here and Now, by Daniel Kany and Carl Little, was published in 2018. He exhibits at Courthouse Gallery Fine Art, Greenhut Galleries, Edgewater Gallery, and Carver Hill Gallery. His work will be featured in a solo exhibition at Courthouse Gallery Fine Art and group exhibitions at Greenhut Galleries in 2026. Celebrate Spring with the Winter Market at Woodlawn Ellsworth Only two dates left for the season: Saturday, March 21st | 10:00 a.m. â 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 11th | 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The first official day of Spring is March 20, and what better way to celebrate than by getting out of the house and visiting the Winter Market at Woodlawn Ellsworth, taking place Saturday, March 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. inside the Woodlawn barn. The Winter Market features a wide variety of unique local vendors, offering everything from jams/syrups, bacon, sourdough bread, and baklava to pottery, woodworking, resin art, jewelry, and so much more. Itâs the perfect opportunity to shop local, discover handcrafted goods, and support regional makersâall in a warm, rustic setting. Beyond shopping, there will be a new story set up on the story trail for everyone to enjoy, as well as free coffee, tea and cocoa in the barn.
