Reduce, reuse, recycle! This is how we roll at Waterfall Arts Glassworks. In this workshop, we will be reusing empty glass beverage bottles to create unique sculptural pieces.   We will pick up bottles in the annealer on a punty or a collar, and bring them up to working temperature in the reheating furnaces. Then, we can pull, twist, or further inflate the bottles into something new! Because bottles are made from glass with different chemistry, we will need to work deliberately to make the changes we envision. Students will improve their ability to “read” the glass and manage heat. There will be an emphasis on moving more quickly and confidently to take advantage of reduced working time before the glass cools/stiffens. Finished pieces are not guaranteed, but leave room to amaze yourself with what you create!

Please do your best to register online so we have a contact list in case of cancellation.  The longest running group of its kind in Midcoast Maine, (AND the only group that offers twice-weekly sessions!) our life drawing group at Waterfall Arts began over a decade ago. Anyone who has an interest in drawing from the figure can join this ongoing, long-running, non-instructional group. Join us on Tuesdays for a short pose, non-instructional, gestural group. Our focus is on clean comedy — humor that connects across generations and settings without leaning on off-color material. Whether you’re brand new or have been writing jokes for years, this is a place to experiment, discover your comedic voice, and get feedback from others on the journey.    What to Expect: - Fun exercises to spark joke ideas - Tools for developing your comedic persona - Time to share and workshop material - A community of comics cheering each other on  Cost: $5 per participant per workshop (helps cover space rental)  The Goal: These workshops are designed to prepare us for monthly clean comedy open mic nights in Belfast beginning January 2026. In this class students will be making up to 4 classic holiday ornaments out of birch bark. Instruction will be given on how to cut, fold and manipulate the birch bark. Ornaments will be decorated with dried flowers, or other materials the instructor has available. Students are also encouraged to bring in any embellishments (yarn, beads, dried flowers, etc) they might have at home to decorate their ornaments. About the instructor: Sandi Cirillo is a retired art teacher and fiber artist with over 25 years of teaching experience in various art forms. She is also a teaching artist in the state of Maine, working with businesses, arts organizations, and adult education programs teaching a variety of classes in drawing, fiber, and art history. Her work is displayed at Local Color Gallery in Belfast and her studio is in Searsport. She also teaches at Senior College in Belfast.

PRINTMAKING OPEN STUDIO (FRIDAY) @ Waterfall Arts Fridays, 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm EST   Start a new project or finish something you have started. Don’t let your lack of studio equipment be an obstacle! Waterfall Arts has well-furnished and staffed facilities for artists of all skill levels to drop in and work independently on their own projects. In addition to providing a workspace and tools, the studios at Waterfall Arts provide a forum for sharing ideas, developing techniques, and experimentation, as well as an opportunity for building community. Artists working in all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to get involved. Drop-in rates are $20 for a 3-hour session. Maximum 5 artists during Open Studios. About the Studio Monitor: MF Morison hails from the west coast where she was primarily known as a metalsmith, apprenticing under Stieg Gusterman (Georgetown, CO) and Thomas Schlicting (Amsterdam). Using acid etch in many processes, she continued to explore this medium, resulting in attending S.F. Art Institute, studying printmaking under the tutelage of Michi Itami. While in SF, MF also worked out of U.C. Berkeley Open Studio and Fort Mason Print Department. Upon her arrival to Midcoast Maine, MF shelved printmaking for a time until she became aware of the Waterfall Arts Printmaking Studio. Since then she has been consistently enthralled and engaged with printmaking, primarily working with copper plate intaglio etching with use of embossment and chine colle. Try drawing in glass for the first time or expand your skill set if you already have experience with glass art! Create a monochromatic drawing using black glass powder on white sheet glass. Black glass powder can be applied, moved and even layered to create bold and graphic images, delicate landscapes, and intricate portraits. It can be pinched, drizzled, stamped, sifted and stenciled for different effects and distinct tonal variations. Bring your own sketch, or use the provided ones, to create a beautiful work of art to be fired in the kiln.   This class is for adults of all levels and will discuss the basics of working in glass powder. Each student will complete 1 piece to be fired in the kiln to a tack fuse, creating a permanent work of art. The unique glass drawing will be either 4x6 or 5x5 and available the following week for pick-up. An N95 mask is required during class and will be provided. This class is suitable for beginner to advanced glass artists, ages 16 and up.

When what to our wondering eyes did appear? Is it once again that wonderful time of year?? Yes! Santa will be returning to the Belfast Boathouse (34 Commercial St.) on the waterfront in Belfast! Join us Saturday, December 13th from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm for this free family event! Children will be able to make an ornament and other crafts from Cornerspring Montesorri School, holiday cookie kits from Delvino’s, enjoy holiday story time provided by Belfast Free Library, a horse drawn family wagon ride from S&S Carriage Rides, Belfast Parks & Recreation returns this year with pine bow decorations for children to take home, and don’t forget the hot chocolate provided by Waldo Community Action Partners! And with another successful book drive last season, we are going to do it again! You can donate new or almost new books the whole month of November, and early December, at the Visitors Center at 33 Main Street in Belfast. Visiting children will be able to select a book the day of the event!

Together we will learn the basics of box making with this perfect beginner's box. Gaining experience using wet adhesives with papers, book cloths and book board. We will learn techniques that also apply to making more complex boxes, while learning the importance of grain and archival materials. Ending the day with a hand-bound box that you can collage and decorate in your own style. Perfect to use for that extra-special holiday gift! About the instructor: Joelle Webber has spent 40 years collecting book arts techniques in college & workshop settings.
