BELFAST, MAINE.  Celebrate Cathy Morgan Bird Week with the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition, May 11-May 18. Those interested in birding are invited to celebrate this special time of year with BBWC, when migratory birds return to the region and “year-round” avian species can also be observed.  Bird Week includes a series of nature walks and a program with Maine Audubon at the Belfast Free Library.  All walks begin at 7:00 am except May 18. Meet at the trail to the Bessey Tract of Meadow Brook Preserve on Swan Lake Ave. (Rt. 141) in Swanville, across the road from the Swanville Transfer Station.  Tuesday, May 14.  ADA Walk and Roll Birding on the Rail Trail. Meet at the Train Station on City Point Road in Belfast.   Thursday, May 16.  Ducktrap River Preserve, CMLT, Lincolnville with Kristin Lindquist and Gary Gulezian Thursday, May 16.   “Welcoming our Returning Migrant Birds:  Who they are, where they came from,” an evening program with Nick Lund of Maine Audubon. 6:30 pm in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library. Friday, May 17.  Sears Island with Erik Klausmeyer Saturday, May 18. Paddle and bird the Goose River in Swanville. Meet at 9:00 am at the put-in below Swan Lake Dam (and behind Swan Lake Grocery). Participants should bring a boat, paddle, PFD, water, lunch, in addition to the recommended gear, and be prepared to portage over a few beaver dams. Saturday, May 25, 8:00 am-2:00 pm. Hike a 9-mile section of the Hills to Sea Trail in Unity. This stretch follows the scenic Sandy Stream and Fly Brook, in the peak of spring wildflower bloom and bird migration. Meet at 9:00 at the Freedom General Store on Rt. 137 in Freedom. In addition to the recommended gear, participants should also bring lunch and water. Waterfall Arts has well-furnished and staffed facilities for artists of all skill levels to drop in and work independently on their own projects. In addition to providing a workspace and tools, the studios at Waterfall Arts provide a forum for sharing ideas, developing techniques, and experimentation, as well as an opportunity for building community. Artists working in all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to get involved. Drop-in rates are $20 for a 3-hour session. Maximum 5 artists during Open Studios. About the Studio Monitor: MF Morison hails from the west coast where she was primarily known as a metalsmith, apprenticing under Stieg Gusterman (Georgetown, CO) and Thomas Schlicting (Amsterdam). Using acid etch in many processes, she continued to explore this medium, resulting in attending S.F. Art Institute, studying printmaking under the tutelage of Michi Itami. While in SF, MF also worked out of U.C. Berkeley Open Studio and Fort Mason Print Department. Upon her arrival to Midcoast Maine, MF shelved printmaking for a time until she became aware of the Waterfall Arts Printmaking Studio. Since then she has been consistently enthralled and engaged with printmaking, primarily working with copper plate intaglio etching with use of embossment and chine colle. I was introduced to hand building and wheel throwing at the age of 7, then moved away from it at age 11. I’ve been finding my way back to it ever since. I worked in sculpture briefly during my college years, finally making my way back home to clay work for good in 2015. I don’t see any end to exploring the many possibilities of this special mud, and can’t wait to see where it takes me next.”

LEVEL II INTRODUCTION TO RELIEF PRINTMAKING @Waterfall Arts May 18, 19 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm $100.00 – $150.00   It is time to bring color into the mix of your prints! If you are comfortable with creating a single-color relief print, then come and learn how to use the multi-block and reduction printmaking techniques. There are exciting differences between the two that leads to very different mark making. We will also discuss inking strategies that can add depth and complexity to your image. Please note this is a 2-day class Saturday May 18 and Sunday May 19.  All materials and tools needed will be supplied. Bring any source imagery that you would like to work on. This class is for adults, ages 15 and up, that have a basic understanding of relief printmaking or related medium.  Multi-block relief printmaking uses a separate block for each color. The carved areas fit together like puzzle pieces and are printed in succession onto the paper. Reduction relief printmaking uses only one block, slowly carving it away as each layer is printed on top of the one before. The final layer is usually the black outline, and it will have every other color printed underneath it. About the instructor: Paul Valentine graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in architecture. He has worked as a museum exhibit designer and as an architectural designer before switching to focus full time on creating art. He has exhibited artwork and painted murals in Qatar, Italy, Russia, New Zealand, Nicaragua, and the United States and participated in a 9-month Artist Residency at the FireStation Museum in Qatar. He has dedicated a significant portion of his life to exploring the natural world, having trekked over 10,000 kilometers of long-distance trails including walking across the US twice on the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail, and the Te Araroa Trail in New Zealand. The impact that sleeping under the stars for almost 2 years during these adventures has had on his work cannot be overstated. COMMUNITY ART TIME @ Waterfall Arts November 16 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST   Our sunny Bridge Studio is open to all adults who need some time to play and practice with basic art materials. Create a collage from our giant scrap bin, relax and color a while, or try the day’s suggested activity. All over 18 years of age are welcome. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing for those easily overstimulated and staff are on hand to assist and encourage. Reaching our community studio currently requires climbing 5 stairs. Suggested donation $5 per person. There will be a jar by the door for contributions, with no questions asked. We are just as happy to host someone who cannot contribute as we are to accept a larger donation!

Come Boating!, Belfast’s community rowing program, offering free rowing throughout the summer and fall, launches its season on Saturday, May 25, 2024: 10 AM-2 PM (Rain Date: Sunday May 26) at the CB Boat shed next to Belfast Public Landing. Learn about our rowing program, meet current rowers, and enjoy refreshments. Coxswains will be on hand from 10 AM to 2 PM to take visitors out for a row on a Cornish pilot gig, no experience necessary, oars and life jackets provided. The organization’s annual “All Things Nautical” Yard Sale, with great deals on many items, will take place between 9 AM and 2 PM. Gardeners ready to refresh their landscapes will find more than 1,000 plants to choose from at the Belfast Garden Club’s annual plant sale Memorial Day Weekend.   The highly anticipated yearly event is Saturday, May 25, from 9 a.m. to noon at Steamboat Landing and the Belfast Boathouse, 34 Commercial St. Shoppers will find everything they need to brighten up their garden beds: perennials, annuals, herbs, shrubs, and pollinating natives such as swamp milkweed, wild geranium and mountain mint.    "Our annual plant sale kicks off the gardening season for so many residents in Waldo County,” said Belfast Garden Club President Lexa Clifford. "We always appreciate their energetic support of our mission.”   The plant sale assembles in one place select donations from Midcoast Maine’s most respected nurseries and garden centers. These include Aubuchon Hardware, Bahner Farm, Barley Joe Farm, Bloomin’ Root Nursery (formerly Carol’s Collectibles), Brambles, Crystal Lake Farm & Nursery, Debby Smith Gardening, Evergreen Valley Farm, Fernwood Nursery & Gardens, Fire Flower Garden, Guini Ridge Farm & Garden Center, Hammond Lumber Company, Honey Petal Plants, Peacemeal Farm, Plants Unlimited, Rebel Hill Farm, Rooted Elements, Tractor Supply and Villageside Farm.   A significant number of four and six-pack selections will be coming from the club’s own greenhouse initiative at McKay Farm and Research Station in Thorndike. This year’s offerings include a diverse array of flowers, herbs and vegetables, hardened off and ready to go right into your garden.   The sale also includes garden-related items such as tools, books, plant stakes and statuary.
