ArtWaves and Healthy Acadia are partnering with you to make Art for Health & Hope! As part of Healthy Acadia's 25 year celebrations, they are inviting the community to take part in Art for Health & Hope, a collaborative project that will become a large-scale installation celebrating health, connection, resilience, and hope, and representing community members from all ages, backgrounds, and corners of Hancock and Washington counties. You can create a make a 5 x 7 wet felted picture and using these skills make a needle felted magnet in this joyful, hands-on workshop celebrating creativity, color, and connection. Your Instructor, Liz Cutler, will share her vast expertise and joy in making art to help participants create 5"x7" art pieces for Art for Health & Hope. Let's make art and build community together!

Make Your Own Mosaic Pieces Workshop What if you could create your own mosaic pieces?  Each student will work with clay to create and paint thin tiles appropriate for mosaics. Instead of relying on commercial materials, students will learn how to design and make custom ceramic components that reflect their own ideas, stories, colors, and textures. Participants will be introduced to the basics of glazing bisque ceramic tiles as well as hand-forming clay tiles using a variety of decorative and surface design techniques. Through carving, texture, stamps, layering, words, imagery, and colorful glazes, students will create original mosaic elements that cannot be found anywhere else. The workshop embraces the playful “make and break” spirit of ceramics, encouraging experimentation with scraps, broken pieces, and unexpected combinations. This workshop opens the door to unlimited creative possibilities. Students might create pieces for a family portrait mosaic, a decorative garden installation, a backsplash, house sign, stepping stone with poetry or meaningful sayings, candle holders, vases, birdbaths, gazing ball surrounds, or expressive wall art. The process invites storytelling, memory, and personal symbolism into the work while building confidence in ceramic and mosaic techniques.  We are excited to welcome back Artist in Residence Instructor Rainey Rodriguez , an artist and educator based in San Antonio, TX, who brings decades of experience to the classroom. This immersive two-afternoon (6-hour) workshop offers a rich introduction to the versatility and beauty of soft pastels. From loose, gestural approaches to more detailed and refined techniques, students will explore how this dynamic medium can adapt to a wide range of artistic styles. Guided step-by-step, participants will learn how to create luminous landscapes while building an understanding of color harmony, values, and depth of field. Emphasis is placed on layering, blending, and developing confidence with mark-making to bring depth and atmosphere to each piece. All materials are included, making this an easy and welcoming experience for beginners and those with limited pastel experience. Teens and adults alike are invited to enjoy this creative weekend and leave with new skills and a finished work or two. In addition to exhibiting since 1995, Rainey founded House Paint Art Studio in 2006, where she teaches both oil and pastel painting assisting students in expanding their practice.   Rainey is an artist from San Antonio, Texas. She has been exhibiting her work for 27 years and has been an art educator since 1999. Rainey is a recipient of the Primer Paso Fellowship. In 2008 Rainey was awarded Instructor of the Year and Most Creative Artist, both by the Southwest School of Art. Create a ceramic wall  niche filled with warmth, texture, and personal style in this inspiring hand building workshop. Designed to hold a contain what you value, a ring, a tea light candle, these decorative wall pieces feature pierced patterns that allow light to shine through, casting beautiful shadows and creating a cozy atmosphere in any space. This workshop is beginner friendly and no clay experience is needed. Students will be guided step-by-step through the process of transforming raw clay into a finished ceramic piece while learning foundational slab construction and handbuilding techniques. A template will be provided for the structure of the luminaria, which students may follow directly or adapt into their own unique design. Surface decoration and creative details are encouraged throughout the process. During the first session, students will build their luminarias from clay. The second session focuses on surface design using colorful underglazes and decorative techniques during an open studio style class. After the pieces are bisque fired, students will return during open studio time to apply a clear glaze before the final firing. Instructor Susan Keller has worked in ceramics for more than 25 years, creating handbuilt functional wares including lighting, dinnerware, jewelry, tiles, and wall pieces. Her work has been featured in galleries, public installations, art fairs, ceramic publications, and retail partnerships. Susan’s work is known for its rich surface design, use of color, and botanical imagery, often combining black stoneware with porcelain interiors. In this hands-on creative art class, we will learn how to twine to make cordage using a technique that goes back at least 50,000 years, predating pottery. Using your own recycled fibers, we will practice techniques used by indigenous cultures worldwide that are still used today to create vessels, baskets, string, rope, bags, fishing nets, sculptures, textiles and many other items. The class goal will be to create your own unique twined vessel. Warning: The art of twining is a slow and fun practice that you can take anywhere with you; but the repetition of the movement of hand and fiber is meditative and very addictive! Join us in this fun ancient practice. No prior knowledge in twining is expected and plenty go supplies available as well.! 14-Adult 2 day workshop/ 2 hour class/ over 2 weeks

As part of Healthy Acadia's 25 year celebrations, they are inviting the community to take part in Art for Health & Hope, a collaborative project that will become a large-scale installation celebrating health, connection, resilience, and hope, and representing community members from all ages, backgrounds, and corners of Hancock and Washington counties. In this workshop you can create a small light-catching stained glass mosaic magnet and use these skills to make a 5 x 7 paper mosaic in this joyful, hands-on workshop celebrating creativity, color, and connection. Sunday June 20  In this engaging two-hour workshop, students will explore the expressive possibilities of soft pastels through bold, gestural mark-making. Using the innovative Mi-Teintes Velvet paper—known for its uniquely textured surface—participants will create a dynamic landscape full of movement, color, and depth and bring home a 9 x 12 pastel painting. This distinctive paper allows for rich layering, holding multiple applications of pigment without the need for fixative or concern about dusting. Students will experiment with building atmosphere, blending, and mark variation while gaining confidence in a more intuitive, less controlled approach to landscape drawing. Rainey is an artist/art educator living in San Antonio, TX. She has been exhibiting work since 1995. In 2006 she established House Paint Art Studio where she teaches both oil and pastel painting.
