Join us at Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park (WInter Harbor, ME) on Tuesday, October 3rd at 7:00pm for a special evening lecture, A World on the Wing: The Global Odyssey of Migratory Birds, with Scott Weidensaul. Even as scientists make astounding discoveries about the navigational and physiological feats that enable migratory birds to cross immense oceans or fly above the highest mountains, go weeks without sleep or remain in unbroken flight for months at a stretch, humans have brought many migrants to the brink. Based on his bestselling new book “A World on the Wing,” author and researcher Scott Weidensaul takes you around the globe — with researchers in the lab probing the limits of what migrating birds can do, to the shores of the Yellow Sea in China, the remote mountains of northeastern India where tribal villages saved the greatest gathering of falcons on the planet, and the Mediterranean, where activists and police are battling bird poachers — to learn how people are fighting to understand and save the world’s great bird migrations. Scott Weidensaul is the author of more than two dozen books on natural history, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist “Living on the Wind” and his latest, the New York Times bestseller “A World on the Wing.” Weidensaul is a contributing editor for Audubon and writes for a variety of other publications, including Bird Watcher’s Digest and Living Bird. Practice Shinrin Yoku on the forest therapy trail with special spots to sit and connect with nature. Come see the moss rocks wall, the large pine tree, and the many secret spots to visit and discover. Unplug from technology, rest in the silence of the forest, gain clarity or transformations, and simply enjoy the beauty of the Maine outdoors. We will begin with an intention, have time for connecting with the forest using our senses, and end with a tea ceremony. This trail is a secluded place to slow down from our busy lives and practice the art of "being."    We will meet by the trail at 8:30 am for welcome and introductions.  At that point, the cell phones are turned off and you will begin your journey into the forest to unplug and unwind. For 2 hours we will be forest bathing along a special trail that Martina has been creating for forest therapy. There are many spots to sit and enjoy nature. We will enjoy a tea ceremony, snack, and sharing of our experiences.  Our journey will end when we express our gratitude for the forest.

Join Rick Fox at Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park this fall for Seeing and Simplifying in a Charged Landscape. “In my experience the idea of ‘seeing’ is exponentially exciting and fluid, but then, paired with the act of translating that experience to a flat surface…with paint…Pandora’s box! I will share influences, personal motivations, and questions that arise during this process of ‘Seeing and Simplifying in a Charged Landscape.” – Rick Fox During this workshop, each day will be a combination of in-studio problem solving and plein-air landscape painting. The studio work will involve specific and directed limitations in anticipation of some of the core challenges, contradictions, and joys of painting in the open, energized landscape. We will make two paintings each day. The morning studio painting will foreshadow issues of the plein air experience in the afternoon. The afternoon painting will be an opportunity to apply the morning studio work out in direct relationship with the landscape. For a full materials list for this workshop, please click here. About Rick Fox Rick Fox (b.1968) is known for the rugged energy and colliding color shapes in his plein air landscapes. He is represented by the Courthouse Gallery in Ellsworth, Maine. Living and painting in Maine since 2013 has been transformative to his painting and has granted him access to a spring of inspiration that that continues to unfold. Rick has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. In addition to the Courthouse Gallery, he is also represented by Gallery NAGA, Boston and Tregony Gallery, UK. With a grant administered by the William James Association in partnership with the N.E.A he designed and implement a Painting and Drawing program for inmates in Federal Prison at FMC Devens in Ayer, MA. Other grants include the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant (twice) and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation’s Piscataqua Region 25,000.00 Artist Advancement Grant. Fellowships and residencies have included the Ballinglen Foundation in County Mayo, Ireland, Mark Rothko Center in Latvia, Playa Residency in Oregon, the Heliker-Lahontan Foundation on Cranberry Island, ME, and the C-Scape Dune Shack Residency in Provincetown, MA. Rick taught Painting and Drawing full time for Assumption University and University of New Hampshire for a combined 16 years and was a mentor to MFA painting candidates at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Lesley University. I will share influences, personal motivations, and questions that arise during this process of ‘Seeing and Simplifying in a Charged Landscape.” – Rick Fox During this workshop, each day will be a combination of in-studio problem solving and plein-air landscape painting. The studio work will involve specific and directed limitations in anticipation of some of the core challenges, contradictions, and joys of painting in the open, energized landscape. We will make two paintings each day. The morning studio painting will foreshadow issues of the plein air experience in the afternoon. About Rick Fox Rick Fox (b.1968) is known for the rugged energy and colliding color shapes in his plein air landscapes. He is represented by the Courthouse Gallery in Ellsworth, Maine. Living and painting in Maine since 2013 has been transformative to his painting and has granted him access to a spring of inspiration that that continues to unfold. Rick has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. In addition to the Courthouse Gallery, he is also represented by Gallery NAGA, Boston and Tregony Gallery, UK. With a grant administered by the William James Association in partnership with the N.E.A he designed and implement a Painting and Drawing program for inmates in Federal Prison at FMC Devens in Ayer, MA. Other grants include the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant (twice) and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation’s Piscataqua Region 25,000.00 Artist Advancement Grant. Fellowships and residencies have included the Ballinglen Foundation in County Mayo, Ireland, Mark Rothko Center in Latvia, Playa Residency in Oregon, the Heliker-Lahontan Foundation on Cranberry Island, ME, and the C-Scape Dune Shack Residency in Provincetown, MA. Rick taught Painting and Drawing full time for Assumption University and University of New Hampshire for a combined 16 years and was a mentor to MFA painting candidates at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Lesley University. Practice Shinrin Yoku on the forest therapy trail with special spots to sit and connect with nature. Come see the moss rocks wall, the large pine tree, and the many secret spots to visit and discover. Unplug from technology, rest in the silence of the forest, gain clarity or transformations, and simply enjoy the beauty of the Maine outdoors. We will begin with an intention, have time for connecting with the forest using our senses, and end with a tea ceremony. This trail is a secluded place to slow down from our busy lives and practice the art of "being."    We will meet by the trail at 8:30 am for welcome and introductions.  At that point, the cell phones are turned off and you will begin your journey into the forest to unplug and unwind. For 2 hours we will be forest bathing along a special trail that Martina has been creating for forest therapy. There are many spots to sit and enjoy nature. We will enjoy a tea ceremony, snack, and sharing of our experiences.  Our journey will end when we express our gratitude for the forest.

Each month we are pleased to invite anyone that would like to get their hands dirty and help create the forest therapy trail. We are making special areas for people to sit near moss, ferns, large trees, and rocks. Special projects may include building a labyrinth, making a self-guided forest bathing trail, or creating camping spots. Work for all skills is needed including: raking, pruning, moving branches, and digging. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 3-5pm. Bring tools if you have them, water, sun hat, and bug repellent. Kids ages 9 and up are welcome to come.
