Join us for our monthly evening paint ‘n’ sip workshops with instructor Erika Elizabeth at the Gilley for a fun evening of learning and art. Students are guided step by step through the process of painting, with plenty of explanation and instruction along the way. Each month has a different theme and inspiration-painting. For December it's a winter nature scene suitable for a holiday card. Skills taught include wet into wet watercolor, with use of ink and salt. Sip on wine, tea or seltzer as part of this adults-only class, which is suitable for artists of all levels who are at least 21 years old. All materials and beverages provided.

Use carving tools and wood-burning to create an owl ornament this December in a workshop at the Wendell Gilley Museum. The class is suitable for beginners but carvers of all levels are welcome. Participants will start with a pre-cut wooden blank, then shape and woodburn it. Students must be at least 12 years old. The workshop will be offered twice: Saturday, Dec. 6 from noon to 3pm, and Thursday, Dec. 11 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. It will be led by Lynda Millar, who teaches woodburning, carving and papercutting at the Gilley. The cost is $32 for Museum members, and $39 for non-members. Class size is limited.

Mondays from 10 AM - 12 PM in the Kaleidoscope studio. Which Stitch? is a community group where participants bring their current fiber and needle projects to work and converse with each other. Participants are welcome to use ArtWaves' supply of materials to knit, crochet, sew, mend, embroider, weave, felt, cross stitch, and so much more! Beginning instruction can be provided and the occasional special guest will introduce new techniques and demo their work. This ongoing group maintains an email list for people interested in receiving regular updates and information. If you would like to be included, please email [email protected]. Some journeys are about discovery, while others are about reunion. Complicated routes can lead us to our roots. On Thursday, December 11th at 6:30pm, Carolyn Rapkievian will recount a once-in-a-lifetime trip this past June to the ancestral villages and towns of her grandparents who survived the 1915 Armenian genocide but whose families did not. With the help of Turkish friends and colleagues she was able to visit Husenig, Kharpert, Gesaria, Germir, Talas, Roomdigin, Sepastia, Tokat, and Smyrna in current-day Türkiye. Carolyn will share family stories, the research process when so much has been lost, and will explore how identity continues to be rooted in place beyond the years of separation.

On Friday, December 12th at 5:30pm, Danny Holt and Molly Gebrian will return to the Jesup for the second concert and lecture in the 2025 - 2026 “Music & Conversation” series. This event is offered in-person only. Longtime friends and musical collaborators Molly Gebrian (viola) and Danny Holt (piano) are known for their dynamic performances and their passion for shining a spotlight on lesser-known classical composers. Their recent album, Trailblazers, features Gebrian’s transcriptions of rarely heard cello sonatas by three female composers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The duo’s current program begins with the standout piece from that album: an intensely dramatic sonata by Dutch composer Henriëtte Bosmans. Contemporaneous works by Russian composer Sergei Vasilenko and British composer Elizabeth Maconchy round out the program, bringing a variety of rich romanticism, tender beauty, and rhythmic intensity.

Gather as a community and enjoy the creative spirit of MDI at the Wendell Gilley Museum for the Museum's annual Community Open House & Art Show on Sunday, Dec. 14, from 1 to 4 p.m.. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. We will have a special one-day-only exhibit of art created at the Gilley in 2024, everything from bird drawings by third-graders to bird carvings by long-time carvers. Free and open to all.
