PhotoNOLA 2025: Chasing the Light: A Life Through Photographs Documentary Screening, Q&A, and Photography Exhibition Tours

In the story of photography in New Orleans, few people have had as meaningful an impact as photographer and gallerist Joshua Mann Pailet. Since opening in 1973, A Gallery for Fine Photography has become the longest continual operational gallery dedicated to fine art photography in the United States. Pailet has shepherded photographs into countless public and private collections, including the New Orleans Museum of Art. His own work behind the camera is also counted among important institutional collections throughout the country. On Wednesday, December 10, join us at NOMA for a special screening of the new documentary film Chasing the Light: A Life Through Photographs, celebrating the life and career of Pailet. Presented as the opening event of PhotoNOLA 2025, the film will be followed by a short question and answer session with NOMA’s Freeman Family Curator of Photographs Brian Piper and Joshua Mann Pailet. This screening and Q&A will be preceeded by pop-up tours by Piper of current photography exhibitions on view: Nicolas Floc’h: Flueves-Ocean Mississippi Watershed, Dawoud Bey: Elegy, and The View from Here: Women Photographers of the American Landscape. Music in the Garden: Coralai and James Andrews and the Crescent City All Stars

NOMA presents Music in the Garden, a seasonal outdoor music series. Encounter the sounds of local New Orleans musicians while strolling through the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden on select Sunday afternoons throughout the year. Performances will take place alongside sculptures across the garden. Sunday, December 14’s Music in the Garden will feature music from Coralai, as well as James Andrews and the Crescent City All Stars. This program is free and open to the public, with registration recommended. Learn more at @coralai.music on Instagram. About James Andrews and the Crescent City All Stars James Andrews is a celebrated Jazz and New Orleans Rhythm and Blues artist. Born into a culturally rich New Orleans family, Andrews is the grandson of the late Jesse “O Poo Pah Do” Hill, the older brother of Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, the cousin of Glen David Andrews, and the late Travis “Trumpet Black” Hill. It is no surprise James has excelled and garnered the love and admiration of producers and fans everywhere.Andrews was raised in the Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans’s most culturally vibrant community. Andrews played in several brass bands, including the Tremé Brass Band, the Junior Olympia Brass Band, New Birth Brass Band, and had the opportunity to study with NEA Jazz Master Danny Barker as a member of the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band where many New Orleans young Jazz musicians went to learn the music. Barker gave James the name — “Satchmo of the Ghetto.”James Andrews and the Crescent City All Stars Jazz Band have performed in some of the nation’s most prestigious theaters and festivals including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, and many others. Their international appearances include the Nice France Jazz Festival and venues in the United Arab Emirates, Cuba, Germany, Switzerland, Haiti, Brazil, Spain, Italy, South Korea, and other countries. James Andrews and the Crescent City All Stars Jazz Band are ambassadors of New Orleans music keeping the tradition alive.
