Play drums and learn about our cultural history and the legacy of Congo Square in New Orleans.Jamilah Yejide Peters-Muhammad is a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was educated in the New Orleans Public School system and is a graduate of Dillard University. Jamilah holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Faith Community Nursing. She is a Mother Grandmother and Great Grandmother.In addition to her work in community wellness Jamilah also serves as a leader in preserving and promoting the cultural traditions of her African ancestors. Jamilah Yejide Peters-Muhammad is affectionately known in her community as Mama Jamilah. She is co-Founder of the Congo Square Preservation Society Kumbuka African Drum and Dance collective and Bamboula 2000. Mama Jamilah has performed and taught African dance and culture for over 40 years. She is a gifted healer dancer singer percussionist and choreographer. Mama Jamilah has been a part of the Black Masking Mardi Gras Indian tradition since age 16 and is presently a member of Guardians of the Flame Maroon Society.This drum circle is open to all ages. No experience required.This program is free and open to the public.

This event will be a mix of interview and live performance. Fred Kasten is an independent contributing radio producer/host at WWNO. After working at WWNO for over 20 years as an on-air talent producer and program director Fred retired from full-time work in May of 2007. Fred is a native of Mobile Alabama a graduate of the University of Alabama and a long-time resident of New Orleans. In addition to his work at WWNO Fred develops independent audio projects from a home studio producing radio features commercials and podcasts. Fred also does marketing and media consulting for the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.Jason Mingledorff is one of the city’s most versatile saxophonists and respected educators. The Grammy-winner can be heard with some of the world’s top bands as well as leading his own straight-ahead jazz combo.Mingledorff moved from his native Alabama to New Orleans to study with the legendary Ellis Marsalis and quickly found work with bands such as the New Orleans Nightcrawlers bluesman Mem Shannon and a nascent Galactic and touring nationally with country superstar Clint Black. For 13 years he was an integral part of the popular funk band Papa Grows Funk and after that band broke up he toured with St. Paul and the Broken Bones opening for the Rolling Stones and jamming with the likes of Sir Elton John and Phillip Glass. At home he can be found playing with English soul-jazz outfit The New Mastersounds the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra The Mishaps (a new incarnation of popular 9th Ward rockers King James & the Special Men) Papa Mali’s Shantytown Underground and the WWII Museum Victory Swing Orchestra.This program is free and open to the public.

Play drums and learn about our cultural history and the legacy of Congo Square in New Orleans.Jamilah Yejide Peters-Muhammad is a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was educated in the New Orleans Public School system and is a graduate of Dillard University. Jamilah holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Faith Community Nursing. She is a Mother Grandmother and Great Grandmother.In addition to her work in community wellness Jamilah also serves as a leader in preserving and promoting the cultural traditions of her African ancestors. Jamilah Yejide Peters-Muhammad is affectionately known in her community as Mama Jamilah. She is co-Founder of the Congo Square Preservation Society Kumbuka African Drum and Dance collective and Bamboula 2000. Mama Jamilah has performed and taught African dance and culture for over 40 years. She is a gifted healer dancer singer percussionist and choreographer. Mama Jamilah has been a part of the Black Masking Mardi Gras Indian tradition since age 16 and is presently a member of Guardians of the Flame Maroon Society.This drum circle is open to all ages. No experience required.This program is free and open to the public.

The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve present a Christmas Concertwith theShades of Praise Gospel Choir featuring Emeka DibiaSaturday at 3:00 pm At the National Park Service French Quarter Visitor Center 419 Decatur St New Orleans In October 2000 two friends Philip Manuel (a renowned New Orleans jazz vocalist) and Michael Cowan (a Loyola University theologian) had an idea to create a genuinely integrated organization.  They wondered … if they brought black and white people together to do something fun and meaningful and valuable might they create an environment where at least this small group of people could begin to get past the personal segregation that exists in life in New Orleans and in America. So they each invited six friends who loved music some black some white to join a new gospel choir. And they convinced Al Bemiss a highly respected New Orleans gospel choirmaster to direct the choir.And under Bemiss’ instruction Shades of Praise became a bit of a phenomenon in New Orleans. The choir became known for its joyous high-energy contemporary gospel sound. Audiences were visibly moved by the choir members’ obvious closeness … by this glimpse of what New Orleans could be. In addition to concerts at various churches around town Shades of Praise began singing at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. They were featured in the WWL TV promotion nominated for the Big Easy Award in the Best Gospel Choir Category and were at the center of a city-wide series of “Care Again” concerts to facilitate public dialogue on race and promote harmony and diversity.This program is free and open to the public.
