Some crafts are ancient, some are only a little vintage, and some are the newest trend online. Whatever you craft, craft it here.Rangers will also provide at least one independent crafting activity for participants to try out and see what they can make. This week come test your skills with hand sewing a felt ornament! Recommended for ages 10 and up.Limited supplies are available at the center. The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Parkand theJean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preservepresent aJazz Hour with Matt LemmlerWednesday at 1:00 pmAt the National Park Service French Quarter Visitor Center419 Decatur St New OrleansMatt Lemmler was raised just blocks from Fats Domino’s home and the pianist composer and arranger seems to have absorbed some of that genius’s creativity and drive as well as the influences of his musical family. After earning a master’s from the Manhattan School of Music (with his compositions debuting at Carnegie Hall Lemmler toured Europe with “The Phantom of the Opera” before settling back in New Orleans playing routinely with Pete Fountain Bob French and the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band and many others including arranging and conducting French pop star Dany Brilliant’s platinum record “A La Nouvelle Orleans” and “Histoire d’Un Amour.” After a post-Katrina stint in Houston Lemmler returned to New Orleans and now leads the New Orleans Jazz Revival Band in performance and educational programs.This program is free and open to the public.

Play drums and learn about our cultural history and the legacy of Congo Square in New Orleans.Jamilah Yejide Peters-Muhammad is a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was educated in the New Orleans Public School system and is a graduate of Dillard University. Jamilah holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Faith Community Nursing. She is a Mother Grandmother and Great Grandmother.In addition to her work in community wellness Jamilah also serves as a leader in preserving and promoting the cultural traditions of her African ancestors. Jamilah Yejide Peters-Muhammad is affectionately known in her community as Mama Jamilah. She is co-Founder of the Congo Square Preservation Society Kumbuka African Drum and Dance collective and Bamboula 2000. Mama Jamilah has performed and taught African dance and culture for over 40 years. She is a gifted healer dancer singer percussionist and choreographer. Mama Jamilah has been a part of the Black Masking Mardi Gras Indian tradition since age 16 and is presently a member of Guardians of the Flame Maroon Society.This drum circle is open to all ages. No experience required.This program is free and open to the public.

The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve present a Jazz Program featuring theJohnny Vidacovich TrioSaturday at 3:00 pm At the National Park Service French Quarter Visitor Center 419 Decatur St New Orleans Johnny Vidacovich has brought his impeccable jazz drumming to countless bandstands over the course of his sixty-plus year career with his own combos as a side-man and as a member of Astral Project New Orleans’ venerable contemporary jazz powerhouse. He has been called “the quintessential New Orleans drummer ” and has laid down the groove on some of the most important recordings of our time by names like Harry Connick Jr. Professor Longhair and James Booker.Born in New Orleans in 1949 Johnny Vidacovich began playing drums when he was ten and professionally in the late 1960s with the Ronnie Dupont Quartet He then joined Al Hirt’s band and started fronting his own more modern-flavored combos. “Johnny V” has recorded some of the most enduring rhythm tracks of our time laying down the groove on Professor Longhair’s “Crawfish Fiesta ” James Booker’s “Classified ” and on recordings by Harry Connick Jr. Johnny Adams Charlie Rich Alvin “Red” Tyler George Porter Jr. Papa Mali John Scofield Mose Allison John Mooney Al Belleto Anders Osborne Shane Theriot Tom McDermott and Anders Osborne among others.He’s recorded four CDs under his own name and over 30 with other artists. He’s led Tipitina’s famed Sunday youth workshops for years conducts workshops and private lessons and has served on the faculty at Loyola University and the University of New Orleans.This program is free and open to the public.

The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve present aSpecial Programfeaturing theKalindah LaveauxWednesday at 3:00 pm At the National Park Service French Quarter Visitor Center 419 Decatur St New OrleansKalindah Laveaux presents a music performance that including jazz Voudou songs jurés spirituals and blues.New Orleans Voodoo Queen Kalindah Marie Laveaux is a native born Afro-Creole who can give first hand accounts of New Orleans tradition and culture from the inside. The infamous Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau and founder of the Sisters of the Holy Family Henriette Delille are among her ancestry. Laveaux was born into the bloodline tradition of Voodoo. She maintains the Laveaux Legacy of offering readings blessings and gris gris to the community and visitors of the city.She is also a singer who performs around the city and has an album entitled Soul Beautiful. Laveaux holds a BA in Jazz Studies from the University of New Orleans. Voodoo Queen KalindahMarie Laveaux may be most recognized for dancing in the Voodoo ritual scene in American Horror Story: Coven along side Angela Bassett. She has also sung and danced in several episodes of the HBO Series: Treme as a Mardi Gras Indian Queen.This program is free and open to the public.
