Santa Claus is coming to the Library! We will have fun holiday crafts, activities, a treat, and a visit with Santa! If you would like to take pictures, please bring your own camera. No Registration is required. Candy canes, cookies, juice, and chocolate milk will be served. Please inform the librarian of any food allergies at least one week in advance. The Sanborn Fire Protection Maps are often used in historical and genealogical research. Daniel Alfred Sanborn started  the company in 1867 and it rose to employ  hundred of surveyors throughout the years from 1867-1970. In total nearly 700,000 individual sheets were drafted and mapped using the Sanborn methods  from roughly 12,000 towns and cities throughout the United States. While the maps were originally intended for fire insurance purposes as well as waterway system maps of the areas today they often function as a snapshot to a place and time of their making. The Library of Congress has the largest searchable database housing the maps in the public domain. In this lecture the process of accessing and decoding the maps from the Library of Congress website, as well discussing the St. Tammany Parish Library's Sanborn collection will be discussed. The speakers are Ramona Elder, Genealogy librarian and Barret Reich, Reference librarian both employed with St. Tammany Parish Library.  This class is free and open to the public. Seating space is limited to adults. Registration is required. The library welcomes people of all abilities to programs.
