The Congressional Forum is a 54 year institution, and the Chamber's public policy series, which features local, state, and federal representatives to speak about issues relevant to the area's business community. Representative Sharice Davids speaks to the group as often as she can, but other guest speakers are often featured at the monthly forums.  This month's featured speaker is Kansas Secretary of Transportation Julie Lorenz. About Lorenz: Julie Lorenz was appointed by Gov. Laura Kelly in January 2019 to lead the Kansas Department of Transportation. With more than 25 years of experience, she is recognized as a national leader in the areas of policy development, collaboration and the use of economic analysis to communicate the value of transportation investment. Previously, Lorenz led strategic consulting and public engagement services for the Transportation Global Practice at Burns & McDonnell, where she managed transportation projects at the local, regional and national levels. Lorenz led research for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program on topics such as long-term and emerging trends in transportation and how to create and sustain a culture of innovation for state departments of transportation. She is currently serving on the Executive Committee of the Transportation Research Board and is chairing the Council on Aviation for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Lorenz is a graduate of the University of Kansas, where she earned a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Psychology and Drury University, where she earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Psychology and Business Administration. Her role of secretary is her second tour of duty for KDOT, as she served as the Director of Public Affairs from 2003 to 2011.

Save the date for our August Membership Luncheon that will be focused on networking with our neighbors to the south at the Shawnee Chamber and will feature a speaker relevant to our region! Past speakers have included Governor Laura Kelly, University of Kansas Health Systems, both KCK and Shawnee mayors, and more. We are excited to announce this year's speaker Kansas Secretary of Labor Amber Shultz! About Shultz: Amber Shultz is the current Kansas secretary of labor. Gov. Laura Kelly appointed Shultz to the position on January 29, 2021, to replace Acting Secretary Brett Flachsbarth. She served in an acting capacity until the Kansas State Senate confirmed her appointment on March 31, 2021. Amber Shultz earned a bachelor's degree and M.B.A. from the University of Kansas. Shultz's career experience includes working as the general manager of the Municipal Services & Operations Department for the City of Lawrence, as the deputy director of public works and a technical support division manager for the City of Topeka, Kansas, and as an assistant IT director and a GIS developer with Jackson County, Missouri.

The Congressional Forum is a 54 year institution, and the Chamber's public policy series, which features local, state, and federal representatives to speak about issues relevant to the area's business community. Representative Sharice Davids speaks to the group as often as she can, but other guest speakers are often featured at the monthly forums.  This month's featured speaker is Kansas Lieutenant Governor David Toland. About Toland: David Toland was sworn in as Lieutenant Governor of Kansas on January 4, 2021. David Toland is the 52nd Lieutenant Governor of the State of Kansas and also serves as Secretary of the Kansas Department of Commerce. A seventh-generation Kansan, Toland was appointed Secretary of Commerce by Governor Laura Kelly in January 2019 and Lieutenant Governor in January 2021. As Secretary of Commerce Toland has overseen sweeping changes within the state’s lead economic development agency. Under his leadership, the Department has rebuilt its in-state, domestic, and international business recruitment teams; launched the state’s Office of Broadband Development; re-established a Community Development division and the Kansas Main Street Program; and launched the state’s first new economic development strategic planning process since 1986. Toland and his team have been at the forefront of Governor Kelly’s efforts to support the state’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, providing technical and financial assistance to thousands of small businesses. He also led negotiations on behalf of Governor Kelly that resulted in the end of the incentives “Border War” that raged between Kansas and Missouri for a decade. These efforts have resulted in over $2.5 billion in new capital investment by businesses in Kansas in 2020, an increase of nearly 80% over the previous year and the highest in state history. Prior to joining the team at Commerce, Secretary Toland was the first CEO of Thrive Allen County, a nonprofit coalition that works to improve quality of life and economic conditions in Allen County, Kansas. A seventh-generation Allen Countian, Toland oversaw the organization in its efforts toward improving economic conditions, healthcare access, and quality of life in the small, rural Kansas county. Prior to his return to his hometown to lead Thrive Allen County, Toland worked as an appointee of Washington, D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams, holding key leadership positions in the D.C. economic development and planning offices. He holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Kansas. Toland and his wife, Beth, an Early Childhood Education Specialist at Allen Community College, were married in 2001 and have two children.

    The KCK Chamber cordially invites you to its Annual Celebration & Awards 2022 “Stronger Together,” Friday, November 18th, at the historic Memorial Hall in downtown KCK!  Step back in time and dust off your best 1920’s vintage look!  The Red Carpet Reception begins at 5:30pm with the Awards & Show starting at 7:00pm.  A star-studded night of honors, tributes, music & comedy will make for a memorable evening.
